What happens to my websites created in iWeb when iCloud replaces IWeb as is rumoured... they will be lost?

RapidWeaver here I come -- really wrenching for Apple to go from mac.com to MobileMe and now to iCloud, so no surprise that they pulled the rug under yet again. I'm actually a long enough term Mac user to have used both AppleLink and eWorld, so I'm very familiar with Apple's fly-by-night approach to online services.

Pity they seem to have killed off iWeb as well in the process (perhaps not immediately, but it certainly seems like a dead product now) -- that does explain the lack of updates.

I can understand, most people complain about MobileMe (mostly about the expense) when "I can get all that for free through Google sync yadda yadda yadda..."

Well, you I and know that, and you and I DON'T want ads shoved down our throats and we want to own our own content.

Anyway, iCloud simply is Apple's answer to MobileMe's critics and appeal to what the masses seem to be clamoring for. Most people don't want to create their own websites (and DVDs) most people DO want their contacts / calendars / mail / photos / music for FREE anywhere they are. iCould / iWork more or less trumps Google / flickr / Google docs / Amazon digital locker with their approach.

And Apple is still doing it WITHOUT advertising support (a huge plus in my book). $99.99 was obviously way too much for most people ( two lattes a month) however $25.00 a year is probably a LOT more palatable (not to mention automatic versioning and offline backups of ALL iCloud aware documents). In order to make that price point happen, other features that weren't as popular needed to go.

It just is odd to me, that Apple wouldn't keep the $99 a year option open for those of use that used and wanted the added functionality. While I'll be the first to admit that Dropbox easily trumps iDisk for file sharing and the new iCloud SHOULD be a good substitute for my own off site files...it's the iWeb / web-hosting which is the irreplaceable piece in this pie. Heck I still publish calendars and websites to my homepage.mac.com account and they work PERFECTLY after not being officially supported for over two years...

I wish Apple would consider a separate (but integrated) web hosting service (and add FileMaker database connectivity with forms etc....) I'm almost thinking about hosting my own sites using the built in Mac sites feature...

Thanks for letting us know about hostexcellence.com as I just contacted them regarding the secure portions of the 200+ page website that I built and manage using iWeb on MobileMe. It seems that the secure login portion for part of your website is the rumoured issue with outside hosting.

Thankfully, this is not the case. I did an online chat (available 24 hrs per day) with someone there, and they provide the SQL (or whatever the title is....can't remember! lol!) for the parts of your site needed.

The website is a wine school, with secure logins for students of different levels, and is a key issue for me!

Cheers 🙂
