iCloud and my 3G phone

As others have noted, YES YOU CAN USE YOUR IPHONE 3G WITH ICLOUD. In fact you can retain ALL THE FUNCTIONALITY that you had with MobileMe, except, perhaps, findmyiPhone which becomes an iCloud facility... The senior support person I spoke to today was unsure if this functionality would be delivered at all for iPhone 3G users once MobileMe is turned off in June 2012.

To synch everything over the air on your iPhone 3G, you need to reconfigure your iPhone and add new email, contacts and calendar accounts:

Go to Settings / Mail, Contact, Calendars / Add Account / Other.

You need to add the accounts one by one:

Mail

Add an account using your Apple ID. The email server settings are given in earlier post. And that's it - it will immediately synch over the air. Be sure to disable synching via iTunes.

Contacts & Calendar

This is similar, but you will need to call Apple Support and ask to be connected to senior level support. You will need the server name which corresponds to your Apple ID (as at 30 March 2012 the lower levels of support do not have this information). UPDATE: See the earlier post from KeithfromToronto on here (a couple of pages back) to find the correct server name for your AppleID...

You add contacts by adding a new CARDDAV account. The Apple support person will need to tell you the server name to add here.

The server name is in the format: pNN-caldav.icloud.com, where NN is the ID of the server on which your Apple ID resides. Then use your Apple ID & password.

You add contacts by adding a new CALDAV account. The server name is in the format pNN-contacts.icloud.com, where, again, NN is the ID of the server on which your Apple ID resides. and use your Apple ID as before.

Remember to turn off synching via iTunes or you may get duplicate entries or more than one calendar or contacts group.

iDisk

If you use iDisk on your Mac then unfortunately, although iCloud comes with 5Gb of space, you cannot use this for iDisk - it is only used for the back up of IOS devices, for music, video, application data etc.

So I am not really sure if this is already somewhere in the 11 pages of post but I though I would post it becasue it is what ended up working for me and it is simple.

I had combed though a majority of this thread trying almost all the solutions but was still unable to to get my icloud contacts on my 3G phone. No matter what I entered into the server field (whether p01, p02 etc. or the long address including my unique id) it would always automaticlly revert back to "p06-contacts.icloud.com." This server address (when automatically changed) did not load my my contacts and I was getting frustrated becasue I couldn't change it to anything else. So I decided to embrace it. I deleted any other CARDDAV account I had created for icloud and set up a completely new one, except this time, instead of starting with the long address or just the basic "contacts.icloud.com," I put the "p06-contacts.icloud.com." (that it was always changing to) directly into the server addresss line. It immeditally worked and my contacts loaded! So if your server address line keeps reverting back to the same address but doesn't load any contacts try creating a new acoount using the address it always reverts to. I hope this can help somebody!

This is brilliant thank you. I have got my calendar working on my 3G via iColud but I keep getting a "Password incorrect" dialog asking me to input my caldav account password. It goes away itself but it's REALLY annoying ... any ideas, or has anyone else experienced this?

Do you have an idea how to synchronize Safari bookmarks ?

Sorry, I never used that feature. My iPhone is too slow and the screen is too small for me to use Safari... Its probably not possible - iCloud relies on the functionality in IOS 5 for lots of things...

Just a note: it's a really really slow sync, but works.

Readers of this thread might also want to consider the following statement put out by Apple on 1 May 2012. It suggests thatsyncing Calendars and Contacts from non-iCloud-compliant devices may not work AFTER 30 June 2012:

"If you want to keep email working on your devices, go to me.com/move from your computer, choose the option to keep using your email after MobileMe ends, and follow the steps. If your devices meet system requirements, you'll also be able to access all of the iCloud features after June 30, 2012, but only on your compatible devices.

Mail

Mail continues to work on devices that don’t meet iCloud requirements.

Calendars

Calendars continue to sync with your devices until June 30, 2012. After MobileMe ends, if your devices are not running iOS 5 or OS X Lion, Calendars no longer sync (Calendar data still resides locally on your devices). Once your devices are updated to iOS 5 or OS X Lion, your Calendar data will be able to sync with iCloud.com, and you can access all of the iCloud features.

Contacts

Contacts continue to sync with your devices until June 30, 2012. After MobileMe ends, if your devices are not running iOS 5 or OS X Lion, Contacts no longer sync with iCloud.com (Contacts data still resides locally on your devices). Once your devices are updated to iOS 5 or OS X Lion, your Contacts data will be able to sync with iCloud.com, and you can access all of the iCloud features."

Translation: "now we finally found a way to force you to purchase a new gadget".

I'll be really disappointed if I can't get an iphone 5 before June 30 even if it does break the bank.

Then prepare yourself for disappointment. Because as of now, there is no such thing.

It's too bad because if I want my remote syncing functionality to continue without hassle I'll have to buy the soon to be outdated 4S.

Thanks very much for your earlier post where you described the setup for your iphone 3G. Your system worked perfectly for mail and calendars.

For Contacts it was a little more awkward - in the end I used the same p02 that I used for Calendars and simply used the server name of p02-contacts.icloud.com.

After this it all worked seamlessly!!

Many thanks to you and all the others for your ingenuity and courage to get your 'hands dirty' with the settings - now I can keep my wife 'in business' with her iphone 3g until I can upgrade my iphone 4 and pass it down!!

Thank you, all of the information above helped. I found the 9-digit string to be 8-digits in my case.

I don't want to hijack this thread so please don't answer with any details other than URL but is anyone that can point to a thread that highlights how to get this working on OSX 10.6.8? I haven't found out. No, I don't want to upgrade. 🙂

There were a few items in there that mattered, other I had tried over and over before to no avail. I must have missed a small bit somewhere. I hope this helps other people as well.
