It is unlikely that a future exists as iCloud, based on what I saw is tied to iOS5.
Since the 3G does not get iOS5, there is no future for it.
Time to upgrade that 3 year old device. 😉
Every one, especially Kieth, thank you so much for taking the time to lay this out. For the most part its worked brilliantly for me. The only remaining issue I have is that contacts still refuse to sync. I've tried all the options detailed in the last 11 pages but can't crack it. The server automatically changes to p03-contacts.icloud.com and there doesn't appear to be a way to change it. Any ideas?
I should have pointed out that on iCloud half a dozen contacts mysteriously appeared.
It turns out that the operation had worked. What I hadn't realised was that the new account created a separate group on iPhone the which I hadn't spotted. I'd assumed the new account would use the existing contact info.
So now the phone has two groups, the first "on my mac" the second the new account
It turns out that the new iphone group supplies the contacts to iCloud but does not communicate with the information already on the phone.
In the address book app on my mac the new group does not show up
So the question is, "how do I get the original contact info info from the "on my mac" group into the new group and thereby onto iCloud?"
TIA
Just select the Mac-based contact list, and export the contacts. Then choose your cloud-based contacts and import the file you just exported.
Thanks Byron, it worked perfectly.
By way of tidying things up on the phone, is there any way to have just one group on the phone?
Yep. Just delete your old mac-based contacts group and turn off iTunes direct (via cable) synchronisation for your phone . I suggest you keep the export file for a bit just in case...
if you are looking for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to install iCloud on your iPhone 3G,
try googling this :
"iCloud on the officially unsupported iPhone 3G"
...and if you want iCloud on your MacOSX 10.6 Mac, try googling this :
"iCloud on the officially unsupported OSX Snow Leopard"
Good Luck & Enjoy !
;-)
EllenChelsea's approach:This solved my problems. Where as the previous approach, didn't work. Once I put in pNN-contacts.icloud.com, where I obtained the pNN number from the first attempt, it worked straight off! Many thanks!

If you are running iOS 4, you can get Contacts working with iCloud and your device. Look here.
THANK YOU! Had a lot of trouble with Mobileme Settings on my Itouch. This post was so clear and solved it. So happy 🙂
none of the proposed solutions to add a carddav account to my iphone worked. what worked in the end is synch via itunes🙂. thank you all so much for your tipps and hints, found this discussion very helpful!
Dear all - after having bought a quick fix iphone3 after loosing my iphone4 yesterday, the horror of not synching with my ipad was just gonna be too much to take this weekend! Anyway - you solved the issue. Thanks all.
I have an older iphone 3G with 4.2.1, an iphone 4S and an ipad 4.
I would like to start using the 3G again for my wife just a a cheap pay-as-you-go.
Can I somehow get the calendar and contacts to sync ?
Even if the don't sync can I transfer the calendar and contact info from the 4S to the 3G ?
I have either a desktop PC with Windows 7 or a laptop with windows 8 that both have itunes on them.
I tried Restoring the 3G and then using the 4S info to backup into it but that wont work.
Can any of you help ??

Not with iCloud, no. You can sync them with Google, Yahoo, or Outlook on your PC.
Doesn't have to be through iCloud
Can I not somehow transfer the contacts and calendar through iTunes ?
From 4S down to 3G
Not directly. You have to get them into a contact manager or cloud service that you can sync to the 3G.
