It is unlikely that a future exists as iCloud, based on what I saw is tied to iOS5.

Since the 3G does not get iOS5, there is no future for it.

Time to upgrade that 3 year old device. 😉

I have a 3G phone with MobileMe account. I also have iphone 4, Mac air, iMac and iPad. All but 3G phone now running OD5 and Lion...iCloud on all. However, since 3G is not compatible with OS5 and iCloud, I cannot get mail on 3G phone...I keep getting account inactive on my 3G phone. Any thoughts? Not sure why my mail through my mobile me acount is not coming to 3G phone. I have the account set up on the phone.

You should try some of the solutions mentioned already earlier in this thread.

go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Add Account.../Other/Add Mail Account

Fill out the four boxes:

Name: your name

Address: xxxxxxxxxx@me.com (your MobileMe address)

Password: your MobileMe password

Description: iCloud Mail

Now select the IMAP account

imap.mail.me.com

User Name: xxxxxxxxxx (your MobileMe address but without @me.com)

Password: your MM password

SMTP

Server: smtp.me.com

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I got mail working really easily, but struggled with calendars and contacts; I just couldn't get the new accounts to verify until".......................... added the @mac.com to my user name. Verified OK and calendars are working fine, but for some reason the contacts have come across yet. More playing still to do. I suspect they are still stuck in MobileMe and haven't properly transferred to iCloud. They're working fine on two macs and and iPad, but still to reach the iPhone 3G.

none of the above worked for me... completely.

i created a new cardDAV account using:

contacts.icloud.com

as the server

the server address was automatically changed to:

p08-contacts.icloud.com

but no contacts were showing up

i deleted the account, did a hard reset, then created a new cardDAV account, this time using:

p08-contacts.icloud.com

as the server and contacts are now synced!

thanks for the posts everyone.

"My biggest problem was, that my mobileme account was still installed on my 3G. It just provided find my iphone but after removing it, I was able top01-caldav.icloud.com as a calendaring server and p01-contacts.icloud.com as a carddav server. I`ve just entered this as server without any https or port, uniqueid stuff. And now it´s just working."

this worked for me too! thanks.

I cannot get mobileme mail on my 3G after moving to icloud. Spoke to Apple Technician and he told me it was impossible adn that I had to buy 4S whcih is not available anytime soon in my area.

Tried according to the thread:

Fill out the four boxes:

Name: your name

Address: xxxxxxxxxx@me.com (your MobileMe address)

I get message that the mail server is not responding.Verify that you have entered the correct account info in mail settings.

I went to my MAc adn copied the details there and get the same response.

I desparately need to get e mails on my iphone. I tried to go through icloud on my iphone through sfari, adn that does not work either.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dec 5, 2011 2:22 AM in response to anto111ka

I can't seem to get it working properly either...

Both Mail and Contacts have been working from the first moment I tried, but iCloud Calendar keeps my iPhone 3G Calendar completely empty... (the only thing that is in there properly are the birthdays of my contacts...)

I've tried every suggestion I've found out on the internet... including finding & using the proper p0?-paths, doing hard iPhone resets between every step, letting iOS come up with the proper server-paths, re-pasting the proper server-paths onto the short server-paths, turning on iTunes-sync intially (which does work) and then cutting off iTunes-sync to start wireless iCould-sync from there (which erases my iPhone Calendar again...), deleting MobileMe completely of my iPhone, etc. etc.

My iCloud Calendar is okay on my Mac and on iCloud.com, but on my iPhone 3G nothing shows up...

...eventhough the settings on the iPhone seem to be correct, since no errors come up when using these (other settings were giving errors...)

And accessing iCloud.com from iOS-Safari browser is prohibited ; I keep ending up on a mobile website version that doesn't allow any non-iOS5 iPhones...

Anyone any ideas ?

Is there a way to recheck al settings on iCould itself to make sure there's no problem with access-rights or something ?

Thanks !

Note : there's 2 suggestions i haven't tried yet :

1- the repace "@me.com" by "@mac.com" suggestion ; but that wouldn't make any sense, since this account was created after the .Mac-era...

2- the complete re-install of iOS4 on my iPhone 3G ; but I'm afraid to loose some of my data while doing so...

I attempted to follow the suggestions above to get my contacts back onto my iPhone 3G. I had no luck. I found a soluution that worked for me and I now have all my contacts back on my iPhone 3G. As mentioned, I have an iPhone 3G and a Macbook Pro with OS X. I was a MobileMe subscriber and lost my calendar and contacts on my 3G when I moved to iCloud. The following worked for me, but it will require a cabled synch to iTunes to keep contacts up to date until I upgrade to the 4S:

- Click on the Apple logo (top left on the drop down bar).

- Click on system preferences.

- Under the internet and wireless heading, click on the "@" icon; mail, contacts and calendar.

- On the left hand side, you will see the iCloud icon and other email icons. click on the iCloud symbol

- De-select the checked box next to Contacts. You will receive a warning message and will have the option to save your contacts to your Mac. Save the contacts to your Mac.

- Open iTunes, connect your iPhone 3G and click on you phone on the left side under devices.

- Click on the "info" button. It is next to the "apps" and "tones" butons.

- At the very top, you will see "Sync Address Book Contacts"; click on that box and ensure that "all contacts" is also clicked.

- Re-synch your iphone and your contacts will re-appear.

I do not think the process will work for calendars. When and if you upgrade to the iPhone 4S, reverse the procedure to allow contacts to store in the cloud. I hope this helps.

Dec 6, 2011 3:12 AM in response to Toon.B

both options I thought of didn't get me what I was looking for...

1- I wasn't allowed to use "@mac.com" instead of "@me.com", since this account never was a .Mac-account

2- I did do a complete re-instal, but I didn't notice any differences...

but...

I noticed something else - something important I've not seen mentioned anywhere yet :

(only) if the iCloud-server-settings are okay, there will be a "Download (Invitations)"-button (arrow pointing downward into a U-shaped plate) in the bottom-right corner of the iPhone Calendar screen

[and if your settings are not okay, there is not button next to the "List/Day/Month"-button]

so when I noticed that there was also a small spinning ball in the upper right corner of the iPhone Calendar screen (next to the +-button), I thought I might just have been a bit to impatient...

...so I let it go while I took the time to sleep an extra night over it...

and... YES !

when I woke up, everything was synced properly !

maybe I just had a few to many different calendars to sync over WiFi all at once...

(I have about 20 different Calendars inside iCal at the same time...)

now the only thing that I haven't figured out just yet is :

why don't the new calendar-entries (aka. appointments) I make on the iPhone sync to my Mac's iCal within seconds ?

and neither do the new calendar-entries I make in iCal show up on my iPhone...

...how can that be ?

my calendars have been imported automatically from iCloud to my iPhone, but for some mysterious reason, new entries do not show (yet)...

Anyone any suggestions ?

Thanks !
