Duplicate songs on iPhone after iCloud download

After iCloud was introduced, I did this:

  • bought an album on iTunes via my Mac
  • downloaded the album to my iPhone via the iCloud service in the iPhone Music Store
  • Synced my iPhone with my Mac.

Now that new album is on my iPhone twice! Well, the album shows up once, but each song is in there 2 times.

If I un-check the album in iTunes and sync, it no longer shows as doubled, but now those songs won't play when I'm playing the album in iTunes (since iTunes skips un-checked songs).

How do I get the iCloud-downloaded songs OFF my iPhone??

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

My understanding is simplistic. The duplicates in my iPhone music library were due to having both locally downloaded versions and iCloud versions in my iPhone music library. My take is that it's either/or... you either download songs locally into your phone memory to use your iPhone like an iPod, or you use your phone and iMatch to access your iCloud music library. Don't do both unless you want to see the duplicates in your iPhone music library.

To delete the locally downloaded versions from the iPhone, go to Settings > Music > Downloaded Music, select Edit > All Songs, and click Delete. Now my iPhone only see my iCloud music library. I can always switch it back if needed... like if I intend to travel to a place with no broadband wherein I cannot access my iCloud music. Just manage sync to download the music I want, and turn off the iCloud music library. Again, it's either/or...

Just my $.02.

This worked for me with one or two additional steps.

After I had turned off Automatic Downloads for Music, I had to choose to Manually Manage Music on my iPhone, and then manually delete the duplicate songs from the device while in iTunes. After that, I unselected Manually Manage Music, and re-synced the phone. The duplicate tracks did not re-appear, and I have since been able to purchase music without problems.

None of this actually worked for me. I synced with itunes (imac, osx lion) and i have 2 of nearly every song on my iphone. nothing i have done has removed them and i fear i need to do a restore on my iphone. i have very little memory left on my 32gb iphone because of these duplications. some of my ical events on my mac have duplicated since i first used icloud.

Yeah...I have around 4000 songs, including the duplicates, on my iphone. i personally don't have the time or patience to go through and manually delete 1906 duplicated songs. this is an issue with mac osx lion and ios5 not performing properly, and will surely be fixed by apple eventually. until then, the only solution i found was to restore my phone to factory settings and then re-sync it with my imac. i don't dare sync it again until there is another update, for fear that syncing again will duplicate songs again.

Same problem here.

Recreation Steps:

  1. Automatic Download Music set to "On" on iOS devices.
  2. Buy "Test Song" from the Store in iTunes on computer.
  3. "Test Song" is downloaded into iTunes on computer and automatically simultaneously downloaded to my iOS devices.
  4. Corrected Genre of "Test Song" in iTunes on computer.
  5. Added "Test Song" to a sync'd playlist in iTunes on computer.
  6. Sync'd iOS devices with iTunes on computer.

Result under iOS 5.0.1/iTunes 10.5.1:

  1. "Test Song" appears once in iTunes on computer with the corrected Genre.
  2. "Test Song" appears twice on iOS devices -- one with the original/incorrect Genre; one with the corrected Genre.
  3. PROBLEM: iOS 5.0.1/iTunes 10.5.1 appears to be treating the "Test Song" contained within the sync'd playlist in iTunes (the one with the corrected Genre) as an entirely different song than the same "Test Song" originally downloaded to the iOS device via Automatic Download Music (the one with the original/incorrect genre).

Proper Result:

When syncing, iOS/iTunes should:

  1. Recognize that the "Test Song" on the iOS device is identical to the "Test Song" in iTunes except for the Genre;
  2. Recognize that I manually changed the Genre of "Test Song" in iTunes, so that is probably the Genre I want assigned to "Test Song"; and
  3. Simply change the Genre of "Test Song" already on the iOS device to match the manually-changed Genre in iTunes rather than treating it as an entirely different song.

Thank you for that post. Thoughtful, accurate, and could be very helpful.

This failure to recognize a change of song information seems to be exactly the problem we're all having with automatic iOS syncing. Yes, it's possible to correct the duplication by manually syncing, but that's not really a solution for those of us who have anything more than a couple hundred songs. I do hope Apple is able to find a solution.
