iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

This just happened to me today my son dropped it and the screen had colored stripes. Found this discussion and hit the back a couple times and it seems to be working fine for now. Hope that is all it needs if it happens again

Thanks to everyone on this thread! I felt like Fonzi kicking the jukebox, but it worked. Had a red screen on my iPad 2 and dropped it the opposite way that I did the first time (had to do it three times). When I dropped it accidently and got the red screen, it landed veritcally with the speaker side down, I just dropped it three times with the speaker side up and it worked. The only negative is that I was working my wife over to replace it with a retina display 128 gb iPad for father's day. Oh well.

Can't believe I've just thrown my iPad on the floor again 4 times from a gradually increased height to get rid of a pixelated red and green flickering screen! Not seen that technique since around 1974 with my parents old TV! How funny, but thanks all for giving me the confidence to try this as too pricey an item to replace and in constant family use around here!

My grandson unintentionally knocked by husbands iPad1 out of his hands and it fell, on its back, about 15 inches onto the carpet. The screen immediately went blank. There was panic! I could still see backlighting so connected it up to the laptop to make sure it was still syncing ok - yup all good on that front. So then it was online to trawl the universe for a solution but after a few hours I gave up. I found a local service agent and primed my son up to take it in for an exploritory the next day. But he decided to have a trawl online too and then asked if I tried 'slapping' it - no I hadn't! Well I read this thread and laughed 'til I cried and decided I got nothing to loose. I took the offending iPad out of it's cover and using my palm slapped it in varying directions with no change - think I must have only been tickling it. Did the same again a bit harder but still nothing so put it aside for about half an hour while I had a glass of wine coz frankly I'd had enough of the whole thing. When I returned the iPad screen was lovely shades of orange and fuzzy, but at least there was now a picture. It was time to stop ***** footing around and get mean. This time I dropped it on it's back from the same height (15 inches) and the darned thing when black again. So higher I went, this it it went green! I powered it off and back on - at least I had the apple logo now. Hmm, better again.. kinda black with green speckles. This time I slapped it down on my knee, right in the middle of it's back.. felt like I was some kind of ninja woman. Holy ****.... the screen came right! Proudly presented it to hubby who reckons it's better than it was. This thread has been going for years through all ipad versions so I can only think it's a design flaw. Jim71 - you're a legend!

My iPad got a red splotchy tent after dropping it one foot onto carpet in a full protective case. I took it to a place and they think its the LED. I agreed and was going to sell them mine when I get the new one in the mail. Inexplicably tonight when I turned it on it was better. The screen is now fully functional but still had red tent in places it should be black. Looking for a repair shop I came across this post. Being old school the first thing I did was beat it like an 80's TV no good.

Tonight I read a post to twist gently. I did so and everything went back to perfect. I twisted gently holding opposite corners. I have already ordered a newer model being an IPad addict one week was to much to take without. Before you buy or repair try this trick it took one second to fix.

I totally freaked out when my iPad fell with its cover on a tile floor. didn't think anything at that time till my husband wanted to use it. he then loudly said why is it red. I didn't know what to do so I immediately search for answer on how to fix when iPad screen is red. read this page about tapping it. I thought what the heck. so many reply saying it work so I thought what do I get to loose. so I tap the back couple times. having doubt after few slaps. I actually even make it like its falling. then wow suddenly it return to normal. NO RED!!! amazing. thank u. happiest person right now!!!

I dropped my iPad this morning and all the colors went weird. Greatful and following the tips found on earlier mail in this thread, I gave my beloved iPad a few slaps (maybe too gently), but din work. Following another tip, I held my I pad screen facing up with thick protective cover on (tip was to do it on a carpet) and dropped it about 16 inches from the ground and hey presto, the colors are back to normal. It worked for my iPad!!

The slapping on the back solution worked for me. I only needed a very light slap too! Great solution!

Mine was the dark grey screen where I could tell the back light was on but there was no image.

This thread was a life saver. Baby dropped iPad and this morning, it was a red screen,I did a hard restart and was about to do a factory setting too. I may have to buy a new iPad soon, but this saved me some money - for now! A whack worked o the old TVs back in the day, who would have thought it'll still work?

Thank you so much ! I cant thank you enough ! We couldnt make ourselves drop it on our tiles so we placed a thin mat and it worked ! I was so happy and scared !! Thank you so so much ! It took us a while to do it and drop it a couple times but that lucky one on the mat was amazing ! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!

Had to join in the celebrations of this thread and offer my thanks to all for the collective "group think" on this!

My wife's iPad 2 mysteriously stopped working after our 2 year old had been using it. There was no display at all but I was able to briefly see the screen by doing a screen grab, so I knew it was working.

After trying a factory reset, I started slapping and tapping to no avail. I tried dropping on the carpet and nothing. Sometimes when I did the screen grab there were fuzzy rainbowish lines so I did fear I was making things worse.

After a while of thinking I was the only one who wouldn't get this to work, I tried dropping on the carpet from a good distance (5 feet?)... and voila! 🙂

Seems to be working fine. She was so sad and I just went up to wake her up and show her it worked. She will get an otterbox before letting the kiddos use it (as will I!)

I will say both of our kids (2 year old and 4 year old) are very good with the iPads and probably would have told us if they did drop it by accident, so I wouldn't be surprised if it just got knocked off the couch or something. Seems like it doesn't have to be much to cause this problem.

This is the most bizarre solution I have ever seen. I have the first generation iPad, and my niece dropped it this morning. I came across this forum after googling my issue. One good slap to the back resolved the issue. This is crazy!!!

for the people in the group, the iPad is now showing the proper display.

I did not slap it , but i bang it on the floor twice from the side of the camera holding front side up 🙂

Dropped the Ipad 1 on the floor and the screen went red. Was so pi..ed off I thumped it on the bedside cabinet and then decided to consult the web. Read the post, switched the old IPad back on and hey presto working like new. Cannot believe it as it was a 50th birthday present from the kids and is like an old friend!!

After my son dropped my ipad in a tantrum, the screen went grey. i was about to buy a new iPad until i found this post. i slapped the back of my iPad a bunch of times like an idiot. My husband thought I was crazy since it didn't work. But then when I tried to "recreate" the fall by dropping the iPad on its side on the table, my iPad was resurrected! I was so happy I almost cried!!
