Time Capsule Error code -6584

oi,

I use my Time Capsule both @ home and at work, at home I use it wireless and finally had a working setup/configuration I saved so hopefully it will work when plugging it in and load the saved settings.

Still am struggling to make it work at work, it work yesterday but did not save the settings, light is green, it's supposedly setup but I keep getting a error code -6584 when I try to "Enter Time Machine.

How do I resolve this (and hopefully prevent it next time...)

Thanks!

I have the same problem, but don't know what you mean by option clicking. I tried placing the cursor on the time machine icon in the desktop tray, holding down the alt-option button and clicking

You need to do that with the Time Machine icon in your menubar, not your Dock.

For best results, though, connect via Ethernet cable if at all possible -- the verification will still take a while, but be 2-3 times faster than via WIFI.

If that doesn't help, try the other things in #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Your best bet is to use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up. It can transfer all your stuff, either from the old Mac or it's backups, so it's set up just like the old one. See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.

As noted in the green box there, if you've already started the new Mac up, and skipped that step, you can use the similar Migration Assistant app, but you need one of the workarounds in the green box of Problems after using Migration Assistant to avoid problems with extra user accounts and permissions.

Thanks for your interest but we have been overtaken by events. I got everything straight, more or less, but heartily suggest anyone with a new computer and a Time Machine backup of data to use the Restore or Migrate functions. Drag and drop leaves a lot behind.

I was responding to apnachintu's question.

But note that you should not restore one Mac's backups to a different one -- in some cases, the installer won't allow it; in others, all sorts of odd things may happen.

The best bet by far is to use Setup Assistant when the new Mac first starts up, not Migration Assistant later on.

I started getting the 6584 Time Capsule error a couple of months after installing Mountain Lion. After trying various things on my own with Google's help (rebooting, changing the password to something different than the main system password, etc), and then calling an Apple support tech and first trying to delete one of the two Timecapsules that was appearing, she then had me erase the Time Capsule, plug in an Ethernet cable to make the initial backup faster, then start from scratch. That worked. The erasure process was:

Lion OS X. Everyting was good in the past and suddenly get 6584 error from finder. Also I can enter time capsule to see prior files but cannot do the backup. It shows cannot connect to the disk and ask me to check the network. It's weird because I can enter the time machine so there should not be network issue.

Dear Pondini, my macbook air has been stolen today on an exhibition, I went to buy a new one tonight. When I back to home, I connect it to my time capsule, Time machine ask me to select where to backup. I choosen and input password of my time capsule.

Then, I can see Time machine in Finder and I could see my backup from October till last night. See below picture:

User uploaded file

And I saw Time machine shows it will start back up in 120 second, I turn off time machine and then turn on, it will not automatically backup. (I do not have experience for use Time machine before, just worry the back up will overwrite old backup, so I am sure no new back from my new MBA to the Time Capsule, picture above are list my backup of my stolen one)

I had deleted previous backup when there popup an error and restart time machine in beginning of October. Above picture shows all data in my time machine. This size of 2012-11-14-002732 is around 80GB.

Now, when I enter time machine, it will popup the error 6584, then, I tried verify backup as you mentioned in previous posts (option + clicking the icon of time machine), when it finished, I still cannot see any backup when I enter star war view.

I want to ask below questions urgently:

1. how can I restore everything on my stolen macbook air to this new one?

2. in my old MBA, besides Moutain Lion, I also installed a Windows 7 in Parallel Desktop 7, will it restored together?

3. the recover include everything? Even include my files on desktop?

I really need your support, thanks a lot.

Have you put your data back on the new Mac?

When the new Mac first started up, it should have asked if you wanted to transfer your info:

Select From Another Disk and follow the onscreen instructions to transfer everything from the backups of the old Mac, so the new Mac will be set up just like the old one. See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for details.

If you do that, and transfer everything including Settings, when you do the first backup you should be asked if you want the new Mac to "inherit" the backups of the old one, per #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. If you choose to, the backups will appear to have been made from the new Mac. When you use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display), you'll see new and old backups all at once.

If you don't do the transfer that way, or don't choose to "inherit" the old backups, Time Machine will start a new set of backups for the new Mac. The first backup will be a full one, not just the changes, so will require a lot of space. And you won't see the old backups at the same time as the new ones.

And I saw Time machine shows it will start back up in 120 second, I turn off time machine and then turn on, it will not automatically backup.

No, once you turn it off and back on, it probably won't back up for an hour.

No, the first backup of the new Mac will not delete the old backups. But if you don't choose to "inherit" the old backups, the new backups will be placed in a separate sparse bundle on your Time Capsule. You'll still be able to see the old ones, via the Browse... option, per #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Now, when I enter time machine, it will popup the error 6584, then, I tried verify backup as you mentioned in previous posts (option + clicking the icon of time machine), when it finished, I still cannot see any backup when I enter star war view.

Since you apparently haven't transferred your data, no, you won't see the old backups normally, since they're from a different Mac than the one you're now using. You should be able to see them via the Browse... option as above.

1. how can I restore everything on my stolen macbook air to this new one?

As noted above, your best bet is/was to transfer when the new Mac first starts up. Since you seem to have skipped that, and have already set up a user account, your best bet is to use one of the workarounds (probably #4) in the green box of Problems after using Migration Assistant. (I realize you didn't actually use Migration Assistant, but you only get one chance to use Setup Assistant, so you need a workaround.)

2. in my old MBA, besides Moutain Lion, I also installed a Windows 7 in Parallel Desktop 7, will it restored together?

I don't do Windoze, but unless you specifically excluded the Windows virtual files, yes.

3. the recover include everything? Even include my files on desktop?

Yes, assuming you hadn't excluded them from backups.

I'll ask the hosts to edit that out, so you don't get swamped with spam.
