Time Capsule Error code -6584

I also got the -6584 error last night. I was trying to access my Time Machine to try and find some photo's I seem to have misplaced. In any case, I followed the instructions posted in the replies, including going to the Time Machine - Troubleshooting page mentioned earlier. After trying the Verify Backups, Repair Disk in Disk Utility that found nothing ("[DUDiskController viewablePartitions] expecting DUDisk, but got nil") and unable to mount my backups through Finder, I've gotten what seems is the death message of "Time Machine must create a new backup for you" according to C#13. So is there anyway to recover my old backups? I understand I can pay for software that can try to recover it, but is there any cost effective way or do I chalk them up to being lost? Overall, I'm tired of all constant Time Machine problems I get every couple of months.

That means your backups are damaged, somewhere, somehow. 😟 Just what and where is unknown.

You should be able to restore selected items from the backups (before you let Time Machine delete it), as long as you don't hit the damaged part(s).

Assuming the photos you're looking for are in your iPhoto Library, your options are limited, though. Since Lion and iPhoto '09, you can't view or restore individual photos from your backups. All you can do is restore the entire library. Usually, folks restore it to an alternate location, such as their desktop, then look there for the desired pictures, export them, then import them into the normal iPhoto library. See the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15 for instructions.

If you have trouble getting to your backups at all, try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. If that doesn't help, try resetting your Time Capsule, per Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ. A "hard reset" should do it.

If you can get to your backups, but have permissions problems restoring the iPhoto Library, see #E9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some possible workarounds.

I had already tried the "full reset" #A4 and just did the "hard reset" and I still cannot get to my backups at all. When I try to mount my backup in Finder I get this: "no mountable file systems."

Ouch! 😟

That means the damage prevents OSX from even figuring out what the backups are.

Realistically, they're probably lost. 😢 Even a data recovery app probably can't mount the sparse bundle, either, so won't be able to recovery anything. In theory, a 3rd-party service might be able to recover something, but as I understand it, it will cost quite a bit of money for them to even try, with no guarantee it will work. See Data Recovery for more info.

I would suggest immediately getting a good external HD to use for "secondary" backups. You can use Time Machine for those, but assuming you want to erase your Time Capsule and continue using Time Machine to back up to it, you might want to use a different app for the secondary backups. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details and some suggestions.

Once you have a good backup there, you might want to not only erase the Time Capsule, but take the time to do a "Zero Out Data" (see the green box in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule if you're not sure how to do that). If that fails, you know there's a problem with the HD in the Time Capsule. If not, it may be ok, and the problems you've had may be network interference, power problems, etc.

So I grabbed one of my spare external HD that I know is still good. Formatted it to Mac Journaled and set it up as my Time Machine Back drive...However, it will not completed the full backup. It now twice has given me the message "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup...An errorr occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use the Disk to repair your backup disk."

I did try to repair the backup disk and it was fine, but when I tried to repair the actual backup volume I got this: "Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files". I reformmated the HD again and tried to do a full backup again and it gave me the same error message. So now what do I do?

Not one of Apple's more complete messages. 😟 Usually, that means there's a problem with a file on your internal HD. If so, there's a message in your logs naming it. See below.

That's quite strange. If it's a problem with a file that TM couldn't handle, the TM disk should be fine.

It shouldn't matter, but when you formatted the disk, did you select the GUID Partition Map Scheme? That should be the default. You can check by clicking the top line for the drive in Disk Utility and look at the lower-right:

If it's either GUID or Apple Partition Map, it should be fine. If it's MBR (Master Boot Record), that's a Windoze setup, which usually works on a Mac, but not always. If so, reformat it to GUID and try again.

If it's already GUID, let's see what your system.log shows. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the messages from the most recent backup attempt, then copy and paste them here (not a screenshot, please).

The external HD is in the GUID. Between our replies, I tried to repair the Backup volume again and it came out OK. I started the backup again and though I got the same vage error message, it has continued with the backup process. In the mean time, here is the log from the previous backup attempt that failed:

That's some sort of problem writing to the backup drive. We're not sure what Error (-47) is (appears to be related to the file system), but "SrcErr:NO" means the problem is on the backup drive, not your internal HD.

That would tend to confirm what the first Repair Disk said. How old is this drive?

You might want to be sure all connections to it are snug and secure; try different port(s) and cables if you can (if you don't have another cable, try swapping ends -- a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another). If it's a multi-interface drive, try a different interface.

On another subject . . . there seem to be some problems with the forum and images. Can you see the image I posted (Disk Utiilty)? How about the one I posted earlier in this thread, on Novermber 14?

Thanks for your detailed reply. Finally, I got my system recovered, because I was start the MBA in the Apple Store, I cannot use Time Machine directly. I need to do it with a fully new system.

Everything back! Including the Windows 7 in the Parallers Desktop 7. Cool.

Here is the final log from Time Machine...it failed. The HD is a few years old, but it worked a few months ago. In any case, based from your previous reply, I might just have to buy a new external HD.

That's a new one - - I've never seen that message before. But it says it couldn't index a file that it apparently just copied from your Mac to the backups.

It does seem to be failing. 😟 They all do, sooner or later. They are mechanical beasties, after all, with tiny bearings and moving parts, in addition to the electronics that don't last forever, either.

And yes, I did see the Disk Utility image.

Ah, good. There's something very odd going on with them -- some folks see them, some don't.

Thanks for the help. So what external HD would you recommend? I just bought the 15" MBP Retina, so I could go with either the Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 connection.

For backups, the highest speed often isn't worth the expense. After the first, full backup, subsequent ones are relatively small, so whether they're super-fast isn't really important.

But, it's your budget!

I have no idea which drives are going to be the most reliable or cost-effective, but as a source (assuming you're in the U.S.), Other World Computing has a very good reputation here, both for hardware and support. I've seen several recommendations, and no negative ones. If in doubt, give them a call.

I bought one of their popular Mercury Elite Pro external drives about year ago, with no problems. They have various others, too.

I see they do have some Thunderbolt models, too. Those are a bit more expensive, of course.

Both have 3-year warranties.

EDIT:

If you're not in the U.S., or want to get something locally, most any name-brand drive is probably good. Check the reviews on Amazon, etc., if you can, but many of them change model numbers so quickly, by the time one gets a good or bad reputation, it's been replaced anyway.

This solved my error code -6584. The last paragraph is jibberish to me. Your first two points nailed it. Back in business with Time Machine. Rebooting didn't do a thing; this did.

Hi there. I'm having the same problem! I tried what worked for you and it tells me

"Time Machine couldn’t verify your backups on “Anna-Lisa's Time Capsule” because verification was interrupted.

Interruptions are usually caused by network problems. Try again after the network problems are resolved."

Also, I am able to view my back up files from my mac book air, just not my imac.

Not sure what to do now.
