I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

I bought a micro USB and the ATV didn't appear in iTunes, though its front light went on intermittently, indicating the cable was doing something. Tried holding 'down' and 'menu' and the front light flickered but still no ATV in iTunes. From what I've read on this thread it's not guaranteed to work anyway and some people are able to update over wifi. I wouldn't spend any extra money unless you think you'll need the cable for anything else.

I downloaded the update from here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9RRLTLBU and successfully updated both of my new Apple Tvs using itunes.

sorry to ask a simple question but having downloaded it do you just leave it in downloads or open the file or somehow link it to itunes or what? presumably if I can't get iTunes to recognise my ATV there's no point me doing the download?

If your Apple TV isn't showing up in iTunes then it is pointless. If it is then the download might work. Download the file and make sure it is on its own. IE not a dmg file. It will probably be an .ISW file. Move it to say your documents folder.

If your TV shows up in iTunes, go to it and hold down option and click restore. This will bring up a dialog asking you to locate the restore file. which you put in my documents.

The method of downloading from an external site might not work as iTunes is meant to verify your restore with apple. If the servers are broken then it probably won't verify.

I tested this earlier when I tried to restore my ATV2 but it couldn't restore it using wifi so that could be the problem with downloading the software from somewhere else.

I tried to update again but no luck at all in the UK.

Seems to be letting people update randomly. I will try and get in touch with apple and if I find anything out i will let you know.

Amazing that people are still having difficulties with this update.

I was successful last evening.

One can only wonder of the many hours spent in vain by so many people trying all sorts of work-arounds and who have probably made a total mess of their players as a result.

That combined with all the replacements given out needlessly by "Geniuses" who didn't seem to know any better, is truly remarkable.

All this for want of the "Powers That Be" eating a little humble pie, announcing that they had a technical difficulty, that would take a certain time to resolve and asking people not to do anything frantic in the meantime.

Most Apple owners are, by default, reasonable people, but the curtain of secrecy which descended (as usual) following on a relatively trivial matter led to a lot of avoidable panic.

I hope the Top Brass will learn from this adventure, though I doubt it.
