I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

Yep, succeeded in the Netherlands. Used micro USB connection with my imac and the downloaded file.
The trick is indeed to disconnect your atv completely (toslink, HDMI and mains) and only connect via micro USB to your iMac. Open i-tunes and hold the alt button on you keyboard while clicking the restore button on your screen. Then you can choose the location of the downloaded file and just follow the procedure on your screen. Version 4.2.2 will be installed.
Until now no more update reminders received. Hope it will stay that way.
Thank you all for your tips and tricks.

Learn what, exactly, cromdubh? That when Apple's update servers have a hiccup, a few dozen OCD afflicted users will endlessly obsess about being unable to update (despite the fact that the vast majority had fully functioning devices with a previous OS virtually indistinguishable from the update) and cluster together around on-line virtual oil drum fires like this one, warming our hands on our shared misery and exchanging tidbits of information about work-arounds and hacks that might get us the holy grail denied us for soooo long, like refugees sharing rumours about where a crust of bread or clean water or a place to hide might be found? (Anyone seen the South Park episode when there's no internet? "I hear there's some internet out in Californi") That if they remain silent and just get on with fixing it instead of engaging with borderline lunatics the worst that can happen is that a miniscule percentage of the users who even noticed might (probably won't) vote with their wallets and not buy that next Apple product and that the vast majority of users won't even know Apple had a problem - which they would if Apple actually said something?

Seriously, people, reality check time (although from the tone of some of these posts some of you lost touch with that concept a long time ago): We couldn't get one automatic update for one model of one apple device for ten days. The vast majority of Apple TV owners had fully functioning devices, the same or better than when they bought them (because previous updates worked seamlessly - admit it!) and/or didn't know the problem existed or had lives and didn't care ... because they knew that pretty soon it would be fixed (which for many it now is and soon will be for all). Maybe it didn't get fixed fast enough to suit those with all the patience of a boiling tea-kettle, but soon enough for normal human beings.

My goodness, what are we all going to do no that it's fixed? Can I blame Apple now for NOT giving me something to obsess about?

I have watched this thread with some interest and amusement.😁

Having made the "leap of faith" to Apple a couple of years ago, I have to say that many of those who are grinding their teeth on this forum really should remember that Apple stuff just works; okay so it only works 99.99% of the time if you include this TV update. If only that were true for Windows or any other OS for that matter!!

I too purchased a new Apple TV from Amazon a few days ago. It installed perfectly and started to work immeadiately - no tinkering around with the registry to get it to recognise my powerline extender for wireless or the 2 ipads & 3 iphones in the house who all want to play around sending music around the house. All I did was follow the instructions and bingo.

Then the horrible little device said "Update available" and gave me a choice; do it now or later. I chose now and it failed, BUT my TV continued to work with no issue on the old version. Okay, so lets try and work out what is going on here. A little research and up came the option of connecting via micro USB to my Mac.

Ordered a micro USB cable from Amazon for the princely sum of £4.58 which arrived next day (that Amazon Prime subscription really does seem to be a good deal sometimes). Plugged it in and it didnt work. 😕 So a bit more research was needed. Then read this thread and found the download site, downloaded the upgrade file, followed the instructions to the letter and bingo problem solved. 🙂

Would this small incident make me junk all my Apple stuff and never buy Apple again? **** no - I like being able to use my system rather than having to load drivers, hack around in the registry and generally spend half my time trying to keep my video editing apps up and running.

We (Apple users) have no idea why the update servers are not working properly at the present time. Is Apple under DOS attack? Have our credit card details been stolen? Have the martians landed and taken over the world? Does it all really matter?

What matters is does your Apple TV work with the current version of code? If yes, then just sit back and relax - I am sure Apple will get round to fixing their update servers. If not, then pick up the phone and send it back to Apple because its broken - thats what the warranty is for.

If you have a jailbroken Apple TV then I am afraid I would agree with Apple - you are on your own. While there is some technical fun to be had by jail breaking your device, there is also the risk that if it goes tits up you are (and should be) on your own. Your fault - end!

So, in summary what is needed here is:

1. Patience - every technology company has issues with its infrastructure at some time

2. Common sense - does it work now and what will the affect be if I dont update now?

3. Read the instructions people provide here and follow them - they worked for me and others I have been talking to outside of this forum

4. Compare the pain you get with Apple updates with those a Windows user would get

So, I would like to extend my thanks to everyone here who has helped me to solve this small issue and hope that one day I will be able to return the favour.

My Apple TV is currently downloading "Paul" which is a comedy film about Aliens who have been living on the Earth for many years. Maybe Apple TV is part of the plot - only time will tell!😉

Dwinpeny, thank you for the voice of reason, I completely agree; although I feel sorry for those unable to rectify faults. I think the Apple community gets so used to stuff 'just working' there is an even greater reaction when it doesn't. Just set up a home network and media with apple devices and it all works - just short of an update for the ATV.

Jun 29, 2011 4:43 PM in response to jollyjap

jollyjap - guess my 31 years experience of struggling with new technology helps to keep my reasonable voice.

For those who cant rectify the issue, then they should be able to rely on Apple Tech Support and it seems that on this occasion the right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing! But at the same time I run a support organisation and sometimes its tough to get messages to everyone around the world, especially for what in Apple terms, is a pretty small revenue product.

Apple Corporate do seem to be dragging their heels and not letting people know whats going on. Its a bit like the problem with the Ipad small docking station and Ipad cover; both supplied by Apple. If you bought both of these you could not dock the Ipad without taking it out of its cover😊 Apple testing and manufacturing deserved a big kick up the arse for that one.

But, compared to the stunts that Microsoft have pulled over the years that pales into insignificance although there could be one looming for Apple when they release Lion - no support for Rosetta meaning no Power PC apps are supported could be an interesting thread to watch.

I feel like Ignatius J. Reilly in the book Confederacy of Dunces. I went to Best Buy and purchased what I was told was a micro USB by Dynex. Ha ha ha ha. Yeah, one end is smaller then the other lol. When I got home and tried to insert it into the ATV2 it was like a whale looking at a gold fish. Hope they give me my money back tomorrow.

LOL. Yeah, in the immortal words of Frau Farbissina "Lies! All lies!" (Bust Buy, not you...).

I don't think Bust Buy critters would know the difference between micro, mini-A, and mini-B USB. Maybe carry your ATV with you to show them. There's a decent pic on Wiki here:

You want the one on the far left...

Good luck!
