I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

Also success here in Tampa FL using the IPSW from the megaupload link in this thread.

To the 'voices of reason' that want to chastize how we're all behaving like OCD children here, just relax already, this is PRECISELY what Internet forums are for; no one's hurting children or tripping old ladies, just a simple discussion about trying to upgrade our Apple TV's. All this talk about workarounds and such has been highly educational for a new Apple TV owner like me and I'm sure others are also that much wiser now.

Well, update in Germany was still failing for me yesterday evening. So I just did what some others already successfully did:

- download the update file (see url few posts before) on your PC,

- connect device via micro USB (unplug power and HDMI) to your PC (Win7 here)

- shift-click restore button in iTunes, select update file and wait until it's through

It worked fine. No green screen anymore with my Philips TV. I just would have liked to be provided this workaround and the update file officially from apple themself.

Maybe I will restore and update the 'usual way' again when servers are fully back.

Good look for everybody who is still trying!

yo,

Here's yet another disappointed customer! My ATV2 also doesn't want to update. And "clicking "update later"only results in a delay of the alert for 30-60 seconds, following which it brings up the "update now or forever get harassed by apple" message. FOr me "update later"means, next day, next week, next month, not next 30 seconds...

Seems like it's common. No idea to contact apple about it as they don't read this and they have no contact email...

Hello Uwe, you're one of had good luck. I've downloaded also the ispw file and can't upgrade on my PC or Mac trough the Micro USB Cable. I made everything as write here and somer other instruction. I try this ispw File and some clean files from other sources. Itunes can extract the file but then is checking something with the apple server and then comes the message the Updates failed. On my TV trough Internet it don't work too.

When I read the discussion, some people can upgrade after some days try again, again, again trough the internet, a few more with the Micro USB Cable in Itunes. But the most people, same as me can't upgrade on both ways.

waiting....

Step 1: Obtain Micro USB (if you don't have one). If you are not SURE, check here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Usb_connectors.JPG

Step 2: Download the .ipsw file. Make sure it STAYS an ipsw file. Don't rename.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9RRLTLBU

Step 3: Drop the .ipsw file into this folder (mac), orequivalent on PC. Delete any old filesin this folder:

Users/UserName/Library/iTunes/Apple TV Software Updates

Step 4: With iTunes open, connect Apple TV to computer viamicro USB. NO POWER CABLE, or HDMI.

Step 5: Your Apple TV should appear in iTunes. Click “restore”. iTunes will look in that folder and see your.ipsw file and you are done.

ALTERNATELY, you can hold down option when clicking restoreand it will ask you to manually identify the .ipsw file. I did the way listed 1st, and itworked without any issue on the first try.

Good luck!
