I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

An Apple support representative called me this morning (June 25, 2011) just after 11 a.m. EST (Express Lane in support is fabulous by the way). He said the "higher ups" know the Apple TV update server is experiencing problems and are working to fix it.


He suggested that I be patient, ignore messages that an update is available, and wait until tomorrow night (June 26) or Monday (June 27) to attempt the update.

I also just got off the phone with Apple support. Stated the fix they had on Friday did not take across all update servers (Memphis, TN area here), and they are compiling a list of areas that are still having the problem. He stated they will probably fix it Monday for me to update on TUESDAY, June 28!! Or I could take it to Apple Store for them to update it since he said they hit the Apple servers directly. Thats more of a hassle Im not willing to go through right now. Guess I'll have to wait several more days for my jittering issues on a newly purchased Apple TV to be fixed with the update.

I just found a solution using iTunes and the micro usb cable to restore.


Many times today, i have tried and failed with this method, but i found a workaround


I am based in Dubai, and it was not working, so I installed Hotspot Shield which is a free vpn software, that will give you an US based IP address


After doing the restore from iTunes with the Hotspot Shield connected, it then worked fine 🙂


I also checked via the Web site Whatsmyip.org, and the geographical location was around New York, so maybe it's working in that area
