FCP7 converts to ProRes. FCPX works in the native format. Color sampling is not the color profile.
Canon MXF is MPEG-2. From their web site:
"The XF100 utilizes Canon's XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper"
Cannon has released its MXF plugin for FCP X here: (tested and true to work on XF 100 files by myself)
Thanks Taintworkin, last time I was sent MXF files I managed to convert them in VisualHub, however it's great to be able to work with the native files now.
Im confused as to why this seems to work fomr some people and not others. you can probably guess that i am an 'other'.
i have fcp x, OS 10.8.6 and the plugin from here:
why is it that i still cant import files from my HD in their original folder structure?
i cant log and capture, as i had to clear the cards during the shoot.

Don't know, Mel. I now pull in my Canon XF100 files and run them with no problem. I realize there is probably some conversion going on and some loss of quality somewhere along the line but I accept all that and edit them.
hey and thanks for the reply.
do you have the same OS as I do?
are you importing right from the card of from the HD? and if from the HD, do you copy over files with XF Utility?
If you wouldn't mind, a step by step might show a difference in out approaches..?

I have an iMac with 10.7.3. I used the Canon utility to copy them to my desktop, and then copied files into FCP X.
i think it does not help you but i use an xf100 and fcpx with a MBP (4 gig) and i import from cam without any problem: 75 min. on the compactflash were into the MPB in -/- 13 min!
I gues there is something wrong in your system...
I am sorry.
bruce
madimg I bet you're using File > Import > Files....
Use File > Import From Camera... and then "Open Archive" and navigate to the top folder of your card copy.

A couple of items to note:
1) FCP X MUST be version 10.0.3 for the Cannon Plugin to work via Import from camera..
2) Once the camera or card reader is plugged in and mounted on the desktop, launch FCP X and then try a import from camera.
I have a new XF100 and have not had a single instance that it does not work.
I am running Lion 10.7.3 on a MacPro with 8GB of RAM. The users in my office that are still on 10.6.x with 4 GB of RAM on MP's cannot believe how fast my machine is. My point is that for editing MXF files you need the horsepower to get the job done. Unless editing on a new MacBook with SSD drives and the i7 CPU, the experiance is going to be a little slow.
I suspect 10.7.3 could also be a prerequist for the Cannon plugin to work as it was released just last month however I am not sure on that.
Good luck.
Thanks all!
Yes the material coming from the XF100 is huge...
I am using the trial version of FCP x 10.0.3.
i took material off the card with XF Utility, and i am using the 'import from camera' option, and navigting to th folder containing the 'contents' folder. everything within that folder is as it came from the camera itself.
i am also using XF 100. Oddly, this works for my other cameras, just not the XF 100.
I also have a feeling it is Lion that makes the difference, taintworkin...
There is a slight possibility that the trial version of FCP doesnt help, but I am less convinced.
I am running a purchased FCP X copy of 10.0.3 and Lion on a 2007 MacPro Quad 2.8 with 8GB of RAM. No issues at all with this setup. I wonder if installing the plugin with a purchased copy on Lion might be the differance?
How did you get the video content on to your hard disk?
How are you trying to "import from camera"?
I use the "backup" function in Canon Utility and then plug-in can import them fine if I select the top level folder from the backup, the one with reverse date as its folder name: 20120410.........

Peter
Re my earlier post (below) ensure you download and install the Cannon MXF FCP X plugin: (you want the FCP X v2.0 version of the software)
Cannon has released its MXF plugin for FCP X here: (tested and true to work on XF 100 files by myself)
Once downloaded then the below steps should work for you.
