Email notification on sub-folders

This is about receiving new email notification. I do receive notifications about new email to my inbox. But I have several folders in my yahoo and gmail and I have set up rules/filter for the new emails to move directly to these folder when they meet the criteria. Now iPhone does not notify me when there is new email there. I'd see new email when I login to web interface of yahoo/gmail. This is frustrating and I am wondering why noone else is finding this problem or talked about this.

Any clue/suggestions ?

thanks

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.2

This didn't solve my problem on the iphone, I already have "Push" on and my Yahoo selection only has "fetch" and "manual". I selected "fetch" and have been

for the last couple years and I still don't get notified for mail in folders. I see online that some people have "pushed mailboxes" to select from I have never seen this on my iphone 5 or iphone 6, maybe yahoo doesn't support this?

Inbox notifications try this

Open mail.

Select your account.

At the top right tab "change" (or "alter", my interface is in dutch so the name might be somewhat different)

When that setting is active, select your subfolder and then change the location of that folder. From the list that pops up choose your account name.

Hit "save".

What does this mean?

The folder is now, not really a subfolder anymore. When mail arrives in that folder you will get the notification in the general inbox folder. Although you receive it in the general inbox, the mail is then sorted according to the rules you have set and then transferred to their designated folder.

If you have done the above but the mails don't update automatically (please check in advance). try this

In mail, contacts and agenda scroll down towards "new data".

After you tabbed on that you will see a list of all the accounts you have connected with your device.

Select the account from which you want to receive notifications from the sub folder.

Select your "scheme" (e.g. push) and make sure your (sub) folder is tagged.

Help I want to change back try this

Beware of changing back, you can't choose inbox (per account) as a main folder via phone (or other device). Although I have not tested this myself I am pretty sure the following works. Log in to the mail account via webpage, you can then create new folders and rules as you see fit. After that you can delete the subfolder you no longer want from your device via the mail application, do this with care as deleting a folder also removes its contents (transfer mail first).

Why would this work?

Your mail application synchronizes automatically with the email accounts you have connected. This includes rules and folders. It works both ways (app to webpage and the other way around).

I hope this information helped, if not. Sorry for the long read... But hey, I had to type it all.

edit: change back fix works. Recommend backing up mail from designated folder before deleting stuff.

One workaround could be possible when people are using Exchange servers and Outlook - when rules are assigned in Outlook. One need not run those rules automatically and let all the mails come in directly to the inbox. Run the rules manually to sort all your emails into folders. Similarly, when using Gmail, do not archive mails into folders as a rule option - only assign label. That way, all the mails stay in Inbox and can still be available under labels. So, when when mails arrive, there are the usual "full" notifications available, helping us in not missing out on emails.

I know this is not ideal but just a workaround to bring some sense of sanity back! 🙂

This situation is really annoying and needs to be fixed! The best (but annoying and a pain to set up) solution I've found is the following:

1. I sort my IMAP mail into folders as it comes in by creating rules at my ISP's email location (log onto my Control Center, go to the email account, and start creating rules).

2. Each rule that redirects an email into a subfolder copies it to the subfolder, leaving the original in my Inbox. A final catchall rule copies any mail not sorted into a subfolder into another subfolder I title "Unsorted". This is necessary so ALL mail is copied to a subfolder as well as ALL mail being in the Inbox.

3. On my PC I use Outlook (2010) without any Outlook rules and it downloads my ISP mail into the folders as sorted at my ISP using the ISP rules. This means Outlook doesn't need to be running to do the sorting, it's already sorted the moment it comes into the ISP's server. If you sort the mail in Outlook but don't have it running and open the iPhone, mail downloads into the Inbox and bypasses the filters.

4. On my ipad and iphone all my mail is in the Inbox, so I can monitor just the inbox for new and unread mail. iOS Mail does this well, which isn't saying much.

5. Back on Outlook I set up Auto Archive to delete Inbox mail (not the subfolders!) older than about 10 days, this way my ios devices don't get clogged with more than 10 days' of mail. If I need to access something older via ios I can look through the subfolders manually.

6. Still in Outlook I create two Search folders, one for all unread mail in all folders EXCEPT the Inbox, and another for ALL mail EXCEPT in the Inbox. I add these two folders to Favorites and most of the time in Outlook I use these two folders to monitor my recent mail and my unread mail. The Inbox is really there only for use on ipad/iphone.

7. Collateral Damage: a) this bloats the mailbox because mail is duplicated in the Inbox and subfolders, at least the recent mail is in Inbox until AutoArchive cleans it out. b) if I mark mail read on iPhone/iPod (inbox) it appears unread in my Outlook favorites folders (because they're seeing the mail in the subfolders not the Inbox), and vice versa. So I often find myself marking mail as read twice or deleting it twice.

I wish there were an alternate ios mail app that would display (1) all recent mail across all folders and Inbox and display in one list/folder/etc., and that would display (2) all UNread mail across all folders and Inbox in one list/folder/etc. If that day ever arrives, I can use my Inbox for unsorted mail and only move (not copy) the subfolder mail to the intended subfolders, as God meant IMAP to be used.

Awkward as my workaround is, the only alternative I can think of is to stop using subfolders, and I refuse to dumb down my desktop mail setup just to match the limitations of ios Mail. Would love to hear of a better solution!!!

A New Email App That Will Make it Easy to Do What You Want:

I have found email app nirvana - an email app that enables you to define and create custom "Mailboxes" that use rules-based sorting of your incoming mail for every account you have. (For example, you can "tag" every sender whose future emails you need a notification on as #priority1 or #VIP or #Notify or whatever, then you can create a Mailbox that only includes incoming email (from the date of Mailbox creation and individual sender tagging) from a sender tagged as #Notify and call that Mailbox whatever you want.

Because you can choose whether to get notifications for each Mailbox you have, you have the ability to use a variety of #tags in a variety of Mailboxes that have "Notifications" turned on. You can even customize the Mailbox Notification setting differently on each iOS device and Mac you own. (And probably with Android and PCs too.)
