Updated to 10.6.8, now I can't print

Lykeios, nice script (although I would of course suggest anyone trying it verify it's contents for their own). Replaces the four suggested files, and I can confirm it resolved my particular issue (Bonjour queue to Xerox Fiery).

Thanks Matt. Yes Version 2.7 seems to be the problem. I'll see if I can get back to 2.6 to solve the problem. I assume Epson is at fault seeing it is their driver. I'll get onto them and see if I can get some work around as well.

Yeap. Same issue here. I just updated from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 yesterday and now I can't print to our Xerox Docucolor 252. Stays on pause and won't resume. I've unplugged and restarted both the Xerox and my Mac about 10 times now. I called Xerox support and they won't help me because it's a "Mac issue". Nice. Thanks for that. Of course I could call Apple but then I'd be paying $50 for something I didn't cause, and they don't have a fix for yet apparently. Um, if more than one type of printer has been affected, why wasn't an immediate fix made available???

Guess ALL of my dozens of print jobs for the week (or three) are S.O.L. here in the marketing department. Very happy with the customer support for Xerox and Apple, not.

Yep, something is very wrong with the 10.6.8 update.

Printer (HP3390) been working fine for years, suddenly getting crashes, printer not ready, waiting for printer.

Full disk check, repair permissions, uninstall HP Director, delete all printers.

Re install from scratch , still no functioning printer.

will try to do full combo update.

I also have been affected by this (non)print bug since I installed 10.6.8 a couple of weeks ago. The affected printer is an HP6940 attached via USB. My symptoms more or less matched those here with one exception; in my limited experimentation I found that I could get Preview to print without any issue. Other programs would print a few lines and then hang. Acrobat Reader, in particular, was affected by this. I had also found that the HP printer utility could print a full page w/o any issues so, according to the HP Utility, the issue was not with the printer itself or being able to communicate with it, but most likely a driver or other software issue. This seemed consistent with the fixes described in this thread.

Anyway, I figured that my first attempt to remedy the problem would be to implement the PPD edit outlined here as that appeared to be the simplest solution. Just for kicks, I tried one more time to print a page from Acrobat Reader. It worked. Huh? I opened up the PPD file and, to my surprise, there was already a line in the file that had the necessary setting (*cupsSNMPSupplies: False).

Perplexed, I backed out of the file with no changes and I noticed that the PPD file datestamp info was basically the time I tried the Acrobat Reader print experiment and that there was a ".O" version of the same PPD file in the directory. I tried using "diff" from terminal on the two versions but it did not detect any so I'm not sure why the ".O" version is there.

Has anyone else had the problem magically go away like this? I'm wondering if the HP driver was able to update itself on the fly, replacing the PPD file, and work around the problem.

In the end, the good news is that I'm apparently able to print fully again. On the flip side, I have no idea why.

I no longer can print either. My printer is an HP Photosmart D110. Luckily, the printer is in their ePrint series, so I am able to email a document to my printer and it will print.

I also can no longer do file sharing, screen sharing, iTunes library sharing, etc since I updated to 10.6.8.

I'm running 106.8 and using TOSHIBA e-STUDIO 4520C Series printer. I have tried all the fixed available, copied those files (socket, dnssd, lpd, ipp) from 10.6.7, run Repair10.6.8 and still it does not work.

Some of the fixes, like http://www.gcsdblogs.org/roodhouse/?p=2349 talk about /usr/libexec folder while others talk about /etc/cups/ folder. Confusing!

I have also added *cupsSNMPSupplies: False line to the end of PPD file.

I have reseted Printing System and repaired permissions.

The only thing i haven't tried is to install combo 10.6.8 again.

Thank you for the comment. Where is the fix that Apple provided? I haven't found it. Also, when I deleted and reinstalled the printer Apple had the printer listed in it's list and I selected it. So, if it is not a good driver I would expect that Apple would no longer have it in their list. This is a SOFTWARE issue, many people have described it and you start printing something and the printer just goes into pause. I am in the process of updating (downgrading) to 10.6.7 to see if things are fixed and will report back. As far as the mouse issue, many threads on the web about kernel panic with usb devices on 10.6.8. I thought blue screen was limited to Microsoft but I was wrong. I was able to fix the mouse problem by deleting MouseSetting.kext but it took hours to find that fix. Hopefully 10.6.7 will allow me to print and I will not be upgrading again. If it ain't broke don't fix it. My upgrade broke it. This is not nuclear science setting up a printer- it couldn't be easier with Apple. But getting it to work after a software upgrade is tough. So, for Apple fans, where is the fix? Does Apple review these complaints and do anything. There are 25 pages alone in just this printer complaint and there are many more complaints on different threads. Very upsetting.

I have 10.6.8 and had no issues printing over a network printer Xerox Phaser 6120 until a month ago when I got the message "Printer Paused". Only switching off and back on the printer helps but that is quite annoying as this machine needs a lot of time to start up. It appears that as soon as the "Energy saving" function of the printer is active, I can no longer print.

I tried :

- click Resume printer > Looking for printer > Copying print data > Paused or Prting page 1 > Ready to Print > Paused

- working with General PS printing or downloaded the drivers from Xerox website but no change

- deleting the printer (click - in settings) and reinstalling it

- delete ALL printers (Reset printing system) and reinstalling it

Ok, this is not a new printer but I just bought a new image unit and all cartrigdes (I think about 600 euro in total) (ok, I should have bought a new one but that's a different story now), so I hope I can still print to it (I have 2 of these machines !)

I replaced the socket file from a Time Machine backup as outlined above and now my Samsung ML 1740 & Canon ip4500 now work.

have you tried reverting to the Epson 2.6 printer package? If not, that would be easier than going back to OSX 10.6.7 - I have an RX650 and it worked for me so it's probably worth trying...

I finally got the lpd replaced on a machine that didn't have Time Machine backup. Thanks cathy fasano for the info. Does anyone know when Apple will fix this problem?

The .ppd hack worked for me.
