Have run applejack, reset printing system & reinstalled printer (FujiXerox 5065II with Fiery RIP), but the print Queue just keeps pausing. The error_log gives this: printer-state-message="/usr/libexec/cups/backend/lpd failed"
Does anyone have a similar problem or found a workaround?

Fixed the issue with printing
Here is what I did
1) Look at the console and validate the crash report which has the following output when the printing fails. Appears that there is a null / divide by zero error in the socket file.

2) I then compare /usr/libexec/cups/backend/socket to a previous TimeMachine version prior to the update and noticed that the file sizes / time stamps differed
3) I backed up my current /usr/libexec/cups/backend/socket and copied over my TimeMachine version over it
4) Created a new printer with my regular settings and was able to print again
For folks that cannot get the old socket file I have posted it here, please backup your own file incase of issue. I am not guaranteeing this will work but it worked for me.

Okay fixed my problem by doing a clean install (NOT AN UPDATE) of Lion and then downloading a driver for my Canon that was compatiable with Lion .

Same can happen with 10.6.6.
Yesterday I had to put a harddisk on my computer. I was told I need a driver from apple by the computer. Pressed the button to download but on top I got unwanted printer stuff.
After this I could not print anymore on 5 printers. I had remove my Aperture library to make some space to install 10.6. This took two hours. And the 10.6.6 update. After 3h it prints again.
Just back your user files up and reload the OS. You will probably fix all your issues but might take a little time. Bad things accumulate with macs as well as pc's but they all get corrupted. My PC with XP in the day I remember reloading every 6 months. You can try resetting your printing system. Right click on a printer in system admin/fax and printers and choose reset printing system. Will remove all trace of printers and start over.
I have 10.6.8 and had installed the Epson security update 2.15 when my problems started. Everytime I tried to print, the printer would go to pause. Today I installed Epson's security update 2.15.1 and my Epson XP-401 is working again.

When you use Canon CLC with Z800 or Z60 do not update to 10.6.8
After trying the hole day to no purpose a lot of what is suggested here.
I will stop and try to go back to 10.6.7
My problem exactly but with a different printer:
In two different Macs, I lost the capability to print to my Konica Minolta c353 printer. The Macs are: mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" and a mid-2010 Mac mini Server. "Printer paused" is what happens. The logs say:
Backend returned status -8 (crashed)
Interestingly, in the Macbook Pro I have a Windows 7 running on top of Parallels and the printer works just fine from any Windows program.
Hope Apple is reading this, as well as the Feedback I also sent them.
Which printer do you have there?
I guess we should probably also post the make and model of the printers we have problems with.
So far it seems that network printing to Xerox printers with Fiery drivers has been consistently broken by the 10.6.8 update.
Same error message here. Printing to Fiery server and Konica-Minolta c6500 just pauses. Tried combo installer and remade print drivers. Tried Print Therapy. Harlequin RIPs are okay. I can work around using PDFs and Command Workstation on the Windows machines. Pain.
may as well keep calling the apple support line and complain to them and let them aware the problem. i just talked to one of the technical support and the guy said they NEVER heard of this issue and insist this is my MBP problem and ask me to pay $49.95 for the technical support plan. this is ridiculous.
Yet another Xerox Fiery user here. Mac that had updated to 10.6.8 started seeing this issue. In testing, I updated my own Mac to 10.6.8, and that triggered it for me as well.
I also note the latest Fiery printer driver installer (for 10.6.x) fails on attempting to install in 10.6.8. Alas, no useful console messages.
There is NO DOUBT .. the problem with ALL printers involved is caused by the latest MAC OS X 10.6.8 UPDATE ..
Tried now to print in my HP CLJ 1515n .. using my daughters MacBook white still with 10.6.7 .. worked fine .. perfect.
So APPLE-Folks .. just fix this problem .URGENT . still this weekend !!!

thanks to all of you for the patch! Restarting the macs did the job for me instead of resetting CUPS.
We have updated all Macs here at work over the weekend and the network printers did not work anymore (HP Color Laserjet CM 1312nfi)
But I am really wondering what Apple is doing there? Is 10.6.8 a beta? We switched from windows to macs years ago, but I am in doubt if that was the correct thing to do...
