Log in loop after update to 10.6.8
Hi, After updating to 10.6.8 on my iMac 27" 2.93 I'm in a login loop. Booting gets as far as the dock appearing then I get a blue screen and am back on the log in screen. Any ideas on how to resolve this? TIA

Are you running Parallels? Check out a KB article they put out http://kb.parallels.com/111541
I checked It. It solves the problem with the dock issue (100%cpu, lost dock), but not solves the problem with login loop.
Thanks
This happened to me also. I must agree with the the people who suspect Parallels. I did all the other tricks (safe boot, permissions repair etc.) and nothing worked. I restored from a Time Machine backup and all was well. My TM backup did NOT include the Parallels virtual machine. I copied it over from another place (this laptop I'm typing on) and when I re-booted the loop started all over again! I am restoring again an this time without the Parallels machine. Now I'm afraid to restart this Laptop since I ran Parallels on it now - I did do the doc removal thing noted on their site and hopefully that will help. In any case it sure LOOKS like it is Parallels messing with things.
Everyone with Parallels must have this problem. I must admit, I am already confused by reading this forum! Have you guys fixed it yet? I hope Apple/Parallels release an update as soon as possible, because I want my Windows 7 app folder back on my dock and I don't want the login loop! If you go on that link to the paralells website saying the problem, they have put that they are working together to release a fix for the problem. I must say, this is the first main problem I have had with my Mac!
I do have Parallels installed but have not launched my Windows 7 virtual machine and I've not had any problem with the login loop since my last post.
Everything returned to normal after install of parallels upgrade version 6.0.12092. Problem solved.
Thanks
Gustavo
I have the same problem on my macbook pro, but I have never installed Parallels....just FYI. It gets hung up on the blue screen every time & it wont even start up in safe mode. I have tried everything I can, so I think im just going to the Genius bar later on today.
Hi. I have the same problem and parallel 6 is installed. Question, how can you upgrade parallel 6 if you are in a closed login loop? It is a catch 22, where you need to upgrade the parallel 6 but you cannot log in! Help PLS.
Hi moshik, what worked for me was to re-install OSX using the DVD and then deleting the file /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
I could then login
I then installed the Parallels update and 10.6.8 and all is fine.
Hope this helps as there seems to be more than one possible problem depending on individual setups.
These happens because the autologin is enabled. I think if you hold the shift key during login, you can disable it. (http://superuser.com/questions/180709/mac-os-x-interrupt-auto-login) . After that, if you know the root password, you can login with this account and erase the file /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist without reinstalling OSX.
Hello,
I've dealt with the logging loop problem. It was done as follows:
1. Reset user and root passwords. I've used Install Disc (hold C during system booting) and Reset Password option). I've set the same password for user and root accounts.
2. Reboot.
3. Login to root account (username: root, password: see point 1 above).
4. Delete loginwindow.plist. The file to be found in folder: /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences.
5. Login to user account.
6. Logging loop vanished.
I hope it will help.

IMO, there's no reason to ever set a root user password, unless you're using FileVault. I've never set one and have been using OS X since 2002. You can delete anything by using the sudo option with your Unix commands.
I've just described what I did - the line of effective actions. I totally agree that there is no need to reset root password. But, I have had no idea how to create a second account with administrator privileges, and reseting root password drew a possibility to login to root account. After that I was able to delete loginwindow.plist file. In my opinion, such a problem with login loop shouldn't ever happen, 'cause there is many people whose are not advance computer users.

Understand. As for this, System Preferences->Accounts->unlock the lock and then click on the plus sign above the unlocked lock icon.

OK. But, how to do it when you cannot log in?
