Log in loop after update to 10.6.8
Hi, After updating to 10.6.8 on my iMac 27" 2.93 I'm in a login loop. Booting gets as far as the dock appearing then I get a blue screen and am back on the log in screen. Any ideas on how to resolve this? TIA

Peruse the various hits from a google search for create user dscl That should be doable via the install disc, using the Terminal app. Details are left as an exercise.
Thank you. It's great to have communicative and competent experts at the forum.

Hello
I did try everything, including DVD boot, Disk Utilities, Disk Repair, Resetting Password etc. Did also the install Snow Leopard 10.6.7 from my DVD. Nothing helped and I ended up eraesing the hard disk and installing everything from the scratch. Returned to ground zero! very frastreting since I have this MacBook Pro for only two weeks.

Have you try to login to your root account and delete loginwindow.plist file from catalog /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences (youruser is a short name of your ordinary account name)? If not, there hasn't be need to reinstall a system.
Hi again jbuczny
I had only one account on my system which was mine with administration privileges. I did not know what is the root account, since I was the only account on the system, still could not log in !!!
Hi moshik,
If you are Mac user the very adaptive thing is to learn UNIX a little bit. Using simple UNIX command you would be able to login to root account or even delete the file causing logging loop problem. Yesterday I used UNIX for the third time as a Mac user, but it helped me to deal with the problem. Knowledge is the power. :-D
Hi,
yesterday i update my work machine from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8 and since then I have the login-loop problem as well. I have no Parallels installed.
From another mac I remote connected to my home, deleted the loginwindow.plist and com.apple.loginwindow.plist in ~/Library/Preferences but after login I ended up again on initial login screen. This does not seem the solve anything in my situation.
The second user account on the work machine does not have the problem with the login-loop.
From this second account I checked the log files and found a bunch of them in: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter with the timestamp of the failed login. Some are: mdworker_...., lsregister_...., DMYProxy_..., Dock_...., Finder_..., UserAccountUpdater_...., etc.
I will have to report to apple and in the meantime try to work within this second account, which works fine, although I have to reinstall the apps I must use.
Any solutions ??

I've found this: http://www.mjscrane.com/page1/Finder_crash_after_update.html. It might be useful. Please let us know if it has worked.
Hi jbuczny,
Thanks for the link. But as I understand, is this person not facing the login-loop problem, but anyway, i removed those files as mentioned:
com.apple.loginwindow.plist
com.apple.recentitems.plist
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.dock.plist
com.apple.dock.db
but it did not help. Still cannot login to my account.
Hi andi,
Have you tried the procedures described above, e.g. deleting loginwindow.plist from /Users/youruser/Library/Preferences? If yes, I'm not capable of providing more solutions.
Hi jbuczny,
yes I have deleted this file as well. With no effect. Thanks anyway ...
@andi
That's pity. I hope there is a solution...
I have a MBP recently upgraded to 10.6.8. Same Login-Loop problem. I got in once. Then let the machine go to sleep and upon waking, it entered the dreaded log-in loop. After scores of attempts, I was able to get in in Safe Mode. I ran permission repair, disk tools, and everything else listed on this forum (except the UNIX command line items) and none of them solved it. Sunday I took the machine to the Apple story and they've had it for three days and can't solve it either.
It seems to me 10.6.8 has some significant flaws and this is hurting my work productivity. I hope they come up with a workable solution ASAP. The only thing the Apple story has recommend is to completely reformat and reload. That's not an acceptable solution!
I am still having the login-loop. Working now with my second account, which does not have this login-loop problem. Until now I dont guess there is a simple solution except reformating or setting up new account and trying to copy the data (mail, docs, pics, music, ... and some settings from ~/Library) by hand to the new account ... 😟
I am also seeing this issue. Went through all of the steps with Apple support and got told to re-image. I am going to try to find a better way to fix this. I am able to log in to any of the other local or network accounts. It only seem to effect the one users account.
