Safari can't load Apple.com, but Chrome can

I am running Snow Leopard version 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5. A problem has developed with Safari. It loads most sites just fine, but some sites, including Apple.com, never load. The error is:

Request Timeout

The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.

Reference #2.76e2ea3f.1309225081.0

Yet Chrome loads Apple.com instantly!

Here's another error message I've never seen:

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the requested URL the following error was encountered:

Connection Lifetime Expired

Footprint has terminated the request because it has exceeded the maximum connection lifetime.

Go to your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab.

Click: Show Cookies.

Type apple in the search field, click Remove All then click Done.

Now empty the Safari cache from the menu bar then restart your Mac.

Try http://www.apple.com/

To recap, the issues are:

1. Some sites never load, stall or time out. Dumping cookies fixes it for a short time, but the problem comes back.

2. Other sites never finish loading. The little spinning gear in the address bar keeps going around long after the page looks like it has loaded, and in fact never quits.

3. The Mac restarts itself on wake from a lengthy or deep sleep.

Otherwise, things are pretty normal, and not bad at all, but there is no way I'll go into the Lion upgrade with glitches like this.

We're confused . . .

1. Why is it that you don't know your ISP?

2. Are you all operating off of one ISP account? How many accounts are there? Routers have a limit.

3. Is it true that you did not have these problems before you moved into this place?

4. When you moved, did you change all of your network settings for the new network?

5. You should check proxies: Sys Prefs > Network > Advanced >Proxies. Anything checked?

6. Mac Pro doesn't work wired or wirelessly, in reg account or new user.

7. MPB works great wired, slow wirelessly.

I would look carefully into the settings, OS, version of Safari, etc. for the MBP(works), vs. the MP(doesn't work). What's different?

If you equipment worked great before you moved, I would cast a jaundiced eye at the modem and router there.

1. I posted my ISP above. It's Roadrunner with IP 75.83.88.38

2. The router is not overloaded. There are 2 computers that use it frequently, and another guy that only checks email every few days.

3. Yes, I never saw any of this at my old place, or anywhere else in my 12 years of Mac use.

4. I am using OpenDNS. What's to change?

5. Aha! Web Proxy (HTTP) is checked. Should I uncheck it? Also, under "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains:" the following is entered: *.local, 169.254/16

Well, I am cautiously optimistic. Unchecking proxy seems to have done the trick, and to be fair, it was one of the first things you mentioned. I just didn't know what it meant. Am I correct in assuming that having no proxies set up is the Mac's default state? If so, the mystery remains of how that proxy made its appearance on my Mac.

I am going to assume that the spontaneous restarting is a separate issue, and post it in a new thread.

Let me recap my situation. I was using a >3 yr old modem+wireless router which I suspected was responsible for my page load time-outs. So I replaced it with a new modem (wired) .. on which everything works fine.

The Network settings on my Macbook when I connected both the routers was the same.. I mean.. no checked proxies.

However whenever I connect my old modem/router and try to connect to the internet both wired and wirelessly, I'm still facing the Request Timeouts. This time the pageload problem showed up on fewer websites than last time. But as Gary said, the problem somehow seems to "spread" with time. It may be true .. may be not. But Weather.com was giving me problems last time around.. and this time when I connected my old router, weather.com loaded just fine. It did NOT give me the "Footprint has terminated the request" message. May be if I used the router for a longer period it would "spread" to other sites... I don't know. This particular apple.com thread however showed the same Request Timeout message again. It even throws a random Reference number at me:

The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.

Reference #2.8beb37a.1309884418.0

So, I'm not going to use my old router again.. but I wish someone can figure out what went wrong all of a sudden.

That's very interesting, and thanks for posting your results.

So, in your case, it's something in your old router. Sounds like some kind of malware got on there.

Do you have a good strong password on your router? And do stay away from questionable sites, eh?

It is something for other readers here to consider checking into.

Thanks.
