Thanks for the hints. But also here you have the problem, that you can even not copy the timecode, no, you must edit it manually. It is not really fun to do work twice, knowing I have all information I need in the timeline but not being able to access it nor copy or paste it.

If I even could export markers.... But...

What I am wondering is, that so many people think, markers are only DVD or BD related.

No, they are not....!!!!

I want chapter markers also on my iPhone, iPad, iTunes, AppleTV etc. to have the possibility to jump directly to this or that scence.

Having no markers in streaming content means: a technological step back to the 80's and "good luck" by finding the scene you want by using forwind and rewind as on VHS tapes.

Markers have nothing to do with dinosaurs... ;-)

To export Chapter markers in Final Cut Pro X using only FCPX and TextEdit:

In your FCPX Timeline locate a chapter point and mark that point (M on keyboard to Mark ,or M twice to Mark and Modify..

Right-click on the marker (or press M twice) and a menu comes up.

Select "modify marker".

Begin your marker label with the Timecode displayed on the bottom center of the Modify window but use all colon separators (even for frames) and then enter your chapter marker name

with a space between the numbers and the first letter thusly:

00:01:18:34 Your Chapter Name Here

Now Copy your Chapter marker name with timecode and open TextEdit and create a plain text document..Save your FCPX marker.

Paste the label name into Textedit.

Create your next marker and repeat the procedure

but paste each label with timecode ref onto a new line in TextEdit.

Repeat until done and save your Text Edit file (This will only work with plain text) .If you do this right, you can now import your text file into DVD Studio Pro as a Chapter marker list for your DVD build (DVDStudio/Import/Marker List)..without any extra programs..Note ,however, that you should only do this after you've finished editing your movie in FCPX…

That said,Metadata Hootenanny is very easy to use, quite intuitive, and free..…tried both methods..just depends on which kludge you prefer…hopefully this problem will be resolved in a near-future FCPX update for us dinosaurs who still do DVDs…:\

Just downloaded the Pro Media Tools Beta trial and I'll see how that works for me... I share your frustration but after doing 27 years as a local TV news production tech , workarounds are second-nature...shouldn't necessary in this case, but nevertheless..

this is exactly what I'm looking for at the moment too - a way in FCP X to mark chapters that will appear in the videos I export for use on iPhone/iPad/AppleTV.

if there any updates re whether this is now possible in FCP X I'd love to hear how to do it....

Yes, that's clear. And it's exactly the workflow I am currently forced to by Apple. Makes me feel somehow raped.

And it is an extremely cumersome workflow, because you have to do all the work twice.

All USD 50..100 software like Magix for Windows is doing this much better. For me as Apple hardcore user it is not easy to admit this... :-/

If it would be at least possible to export FCPX's markers list to a text file for quick and easy import in Compressor.

Anyway: Chapter markers at that basic basic basic - did I mention? basic - they may not miss in any video editing software and must be available also without Compressor. Compressor is such a powerfull tool, it should not be abused only for adding chapter markers.

Best regards,

Roland

There are no chapter markers in FCP. Chapters can be added in Compressor before encoding for AppleTV or whatever else you want.

I just created this app to convert markers from a FCPX xml file to a .txt file that you can import into compressor. Let me know if you have any issues with it.

@RockwoodPro:

  • Your solution is the best free one I found yet. Many 1000 thanks!
  • Do you have an idea, when you publish the update without need to create a compound clip first?

Again: Many thanks for the Marker-Converter! 🙂
