OKI C6150 - Toner Waste Bin Full

I own an OKI C6150dn LED laser printer.

Yesterday, I updated my OS from Snow Leopard 10.6.7 to 16.6.8. Then, today, as I attempt to print to my OKI printer, I have begun getting the error message "Ink/toner waste bin full! OPC almost at end-of-life." Clicking on the Printer Setup in the Print Queue window, the bottom of the list has the entry "Waste Toner box OKI DATA CORP unknown." So, I tried to locate the so-called toner waste bin by referring to the printer's owner manual. I could not find such a waste bin.

So, I called the OKI Tech Support. The rep I spoke with told me that OKI had been flooded with calls regarding the above error message from owners of C6100 and C6150 series printers and that these owners are all Macintosh users who have updated their OS to 10.6.8. The rep stated that the C6150 printer does NOT have a toner waste bin and that the error message is generated by the OS. As a result, OKI of course cannot do anything about it until Apple issues a fix.

This incident reminds me of Snow Leopard breaking printing from Adobe CS5 with some particular types of fonts in documents. It had lingered on until Apple issued a software patch.

It is frustrating to deal with these issues. What would I do if my OKI refused to print because the OS thinks the toner waste bin is full? Ridiculous.

The 10.6.8 update appears to have made changes to SNMP observations from printers. In my lab I have seen similar events flagged, such as low paper in media trays and toner warnings. While these warnings haven't stopped me from printing I think that many of the problems we are seeing with printing errors after the update are due to this change. And this is confirmed by an alert that EFI posted for owners of their Fiery print controllers. They have issued an instruction to modify the printers PPD with the following comment "cupsSNMPSupplies: False". By setting this to false the Mac will not obtain the toner level information and thus allow the Mac to print without an error.

So I would suggest that you need to check with OKI if there is a similar setting in the C6150 PPD. And BTW, the machine will have a waste toner bin. It may not be a separate container as some models have, but it will be present - most likley it is part of the toner cartridge. All toner devices need to have a waste toner section, as all the toner on the drum surface is not used when you print so the remaining toner is scrapped off the drum before it exposed to light and new toner again.

Thanks for the images. The message seems unusual in that it appears to be the name of the print job, given where it is located. The other things that seem out of place is that under the job name it is showing 'Looking for printer" and the status of the job shows Printing rather than error.

So my first thoughts is that this could be a job left over from using the OKI driver. So the next step would be to reset the printing system. This will delete all print queues in Print & Fax, so if you have other printers/scanners the queues but not the drivers will be removed. If you are okay with doing the reset then the instruction is below. After the reset, add your network print queue again to the OKI and see if the same message appears again.

How to Reset the Printing System

1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax

2. Move your mouse over the Printers list

3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse

4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup

5. Restart your Mac

Just to visually confirm what I was saying in my previous reply, below is two image captures from a print to a Canon iR C5185 with an EFI (Fiery) imagePASS-H1. The first image shows the printer proxy (print queue) showing the print job name at the top and the printer status underneath that, which shows 'connected to printer'.

With your print queue to the OKI the status shows looking for printer which suggests that you don't have a connection to the printer from the Mac.

The next image shows the information seen via the Supply Levels tab of the print queue. This amount of information was not seen with 10.6.7, so as I have mentioned, the 10.6.8 update improves the reading of information being sent by the printer, and if the printer is stating that it has a problem then the print job will not be sent.

So can you post what you see with the OKI when you select the Supply Levels tab in the print queue?

We are getting the same message (Developer Empty! Ink/toner waste bin full! OPC at end-of-life!) for our Sharp MX-M363U networked laser printer/copier. Only the Mac users get any error message - PC users on the same printer don't get any errors at all. We are still able to print despite the message. Here is a picture of the message as it appears in the printer utility:

Given the multiple printers involved, it seems like an OS-wide issue.

Hello Robert,

The issue is a combination of the 10.6.8 update, or more so the changes made to CUPS, and the printer driver being used. Not every brand of network printer is having this problem and for some users, changing the driver on their Mac has helped them get around the problem.

As mentioned in the replies to profinite, EFI provided a workaround on their forum which consists of changing the PPD so that the SNMP collection of data is not performed. If you were to open the Sharp MX-M363U PPD and look for an entry mentioning SNMP, then you may be able to rem this line from the PPD and use this modified PPD in the meantime until a fix is introduced. Or if there is an OS9 PPD for this copier, you could try creating another print queue using the OS9 PPD to see if that helps. And another workaround would be to disable the SNMP setting on the copier. And yet another workaround is to replace the 10.6.8 backend files with the versions that were with 10.6.7. So if you have a Time Machine backup you can replace the new backend files with the old ones. If you have a look at this thread some users have created scripts that will do this for you.

I found a workable solution at this link:

http://www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk/blog/2011/07/14/how-to-fix-the-oki-toner-waste-bi n-full-error/

Apparently the cups drivers have been modified in the latest release of MAC OS 10.6.8. The link above has a solution from OKI Data which modifies the cups printer setup file (/etc/cups/ppd/<printer_name>.ppd). The last line is changed to "cupsSNMPSupplies: False" which should stop the error message.

I have the same problem of "OPC at end-of-life" with my Dell 1710n (network) since I updated to 10.6.8. The printer's web interface reports that the photoconductor kit has 95% life remaining. Could it be that the updated OS now sees this as 95% of life, meaning 5% remaining? If that could be the case, then it's an OS programming error as opposed to the printer incorrectly reporting the status. Unfortunately, I do not have a solution.

Identical "OPC at end-of-life" error with my Dell 1720dn also since also updating to 10.6.8.

I also have (on clicking on the printer icon on the dock) got 94% life remaining in the OPC Drum (photoconductor kit). You can buy these for £40 on Amazon, however I don't think I'll be needing one for a long time.

Print Therapy 7.02 software reports: "The current cupsd.conf file is from an older version of CUPS and is not compatible with CUPS version 1.47. This can happen if you perform an upgrade to Mac OSX 10.6. You are strongly advised to replace this file with the correcct version. You can replace the cupsd.conf file in the CUPS Tools section of Print Therapy."
