iphone not recognized by Windows 7

iPhone 4 no longer recognized by Windows 7, 64-bit desktop. The iTunes diagnostic shows everything working satisfactorily, and Windows Control Panel, under Devices and Printers, shows the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". The Properties for that device show the driver as working properly. However, when I plug the iPhone into a USB port (using both a port and cable that formerly worked fine with this iPhone), Windows attempts to install a driver, and fails. The resulting message is "MTP USB Device Device driver software was not successfully installed". Further investigation gives me a message "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".

Like some of the people above, I didn't have the problematic Registry Entry. After some searching, I found this article. It is one of the best articles on how to fix this annoying problem (obviously Microsoft's idea of messing with Apple).

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

Note: Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. iphone 4S. iTunes 10.6.3.25

While it didn't exactly describe how to fix my issue, it helped point me in the right direction. Here is what did to fix my issue.

1. Open up Device Manager

2. Portable Devices > Apple iPhone (in my case had an exclamation point on it)

3. Uninstall the driver.

4. Right click on the the computer in Device Manger and scan for hardware changes.

5. Go back to Portable Devices. If this works for you, the Apple iPhone icon should not have any exclamation points any longer and it will be accessible via My Computer.

Good Luck.

Just thought I'd mention my experiences with the problems discussed in this thread:

I have an old 2G iPhone Touch with a connector issue which often causes various other problems. But today, it suddenly started acting up with the "Device driver was not... etc." error on Win 7 64-bit. This resulted in iTunes freezing until I disconnected the device. I didn't have the registry key mentioned above in my registry, either.

Fortunately, before trying to apply even more drastic measures I found out all it took to get the device to connect again was a forced restart (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds). D'oh!

Just FYI, at least try this before messing with the registry or reinstalling Windows... 🙂

Solution by auto_xr worked perfect for me ... I started with the procedure outlined by Navigate0 at the top, but quickly discovered I had no UpperFilters listed in my registry. Simply uninstalling the iphone in device manager and scanning for hardware changes fixed it all up ... all with the iphone plugged in. Thnx auto!

The solution suggested by auto-xr worked like a charm.

It was so frustrating: for hours I combed the web and tried many different things, but this was the one that finally worked. Just writing a note in appreciation, and to encourage others to try this if they're having the same problem. (Windows 7 Ultimate, iPhone 4S)

Cheers!

I run into the same issue with my iPhone (5s). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (Reboot and all- using aThanasi's reccomendation) it still doesn't recognize the device and gives an error (Code 10). I tried srikar_c's suggestion but it keeps giving me that error when I do all the steps.

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Anyone have a tip?

And when I search for IPhone in "Devices and Printers" it appears listed in Unspecified (error 28)

yes! I am in the same boat as emanuem ... I recently had to replace my iphone 5s due to a theft and now the new one will not work. However, the old one worked perfectly fine. I have removed the old iphone 5s from "My devices" however, it will not connect to my itunes or windows(the new 5s) and everytime I try to update the driver it always says "Access Denied". Help!

I just followed the steps and Windows did not accept the driver. I have 64 bit Windows 7. The message on the device properties said Windows cannot start the device due to a corrupted registry.

So I uninstalled iPhone 5 from the device manager.. Disconnected it and reconnected it. working fine. The issue came up on my system perhaps due to the registry cleaner from Norton.

Just wanted to put this out there. Now keep in mind everything seemed to work fine how ever the phone said phone is disabled connect to iTunes. This is an iPhone 4 when I connected it to my computer it says unknown USB device not recognized after many hours and trying everything i have read here. I let a friend look at it on his Mac book and determined that it had a problem with the charging port. We installed a new one and problem is fixed, So if you have tried everything and no luck then if you like your phone try this.

I had tried the various solutions, but to no avail.

My solution was very simple.

I simply tried another cable after spending hours trying to resolve the problem and voila, it worked.

With the original cable I was able to access my iPhone via iTunes but windows itself could not access it as a USB connected device.

I kept getting the "MTP USB Device Device driver software was not successfully installed" message.

Everything now works fine with the new cable.

I had the same issue with Windows 7 64x and iPhone 4s. I tried several cables -- iTunes recognized my iPhone each time, but Windows Explorer did not.

Then I did this and my problem was solved:

1. Start

2. Device and Printers

3. Under "Unspecified", right-click on Apple Mobile Device, Apple iPhone, or whatever shows up that might be your iPhone

4. Choose "Troubleshoot" - My "Troubleshoot" had a yellow exclamation mark next to it, indicating that something was not right.

5. When it finds a problem, let it fix it automatically.

In my situation, the driver software was not working properly. I checked to see about a dirver update through the Device Manager earlier, but it registered the driver as fully updated. Indeed, the driver was working for iTunes, just not for Windows. Going through the troubeshooter in Devices and Printers did the trick. Windows located the right driver on my computer and fixed the problem. My iPhone now shows up in the Windows Explorer folder. It was not a problem with the three cables I had tried. It was some kind of conflict or soemthing with the driver.
