iphone not recognized by Windows 7

iPhone 4 no longer recognized by Windows 7, 64-bit desktop. The iTunes diagnostic shows everything working satisfactorily, and Windows Control Panel, under Devices and Printers, shows the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". The Properties for that device show the driver as working properly. However, when I plug the iPhone into a USB port (using both a port and cable that formerly worked fine with this iPhone), Windows attempts to install a driver, and fails. The resulting message is "MTP USB Device Device driver software was not successfully installed". Further investigation gives me a message "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".

Like some of the people above, I didn't have the problematic Registry Entry. After some searching, I found this article. It is one of the best articles on how to fix this annoying problem (obviously Microsoft's idea of messing with Apple).

Note: Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. iphone 4S. iTunes 10.6.3.25

While it didn't exactly describe how to fix my issue, it helped point me in the right direction. Here is what did to fix my issue.

1. Open up Device Manager

2. Portable Devices > Apple iPhone (in my case had an exclamation point on it)

3. Uninstall the driver.

4. Right click on the the computer in Device Manger and scan for hardware changes.

5. Go back to Portable Devices. If this works for you, the Apple iPhone icon should not have any exclamation points any longer and it will be accessible via My Computer.

Good Luck.

My PC running Windows 7 would not recognize my iPhone 6 or my iPhone 4s.

I unplugged both phones from the USB cables.

Then, I simply went to the control panel (or whatever its called these days), and I deleted all the device drivers for iPhones.

Then I plugged the 6 back into the cable.

The computer speakers made the "clunga-lunga-lunk" sound that they always make whenever I plug a device into the USB.

Then the computer immediately started looking for drivers for the device.

The computer found drivers all on its own, and voila, iPhone 6 now shows up as a "directory" or whatever we're supposed to call it these days.

Anyhow, I could access all my pics and vids on my phone again via my PC.

So, I say if your phone has disappeared from your list of directories, NUKE any drivers that the latest-greatest update installs, and then plug your phone back into your computer, and let the computer self-fix itself.

I don't understand any of it, but it worked for me.

This worked for me. I spent hours trying to resolve this issue and it was a 30 second fix. Here is exactly what I done.

Go to start and type in autoplay, click on autoplay.

Scroll all the way to the bottom and click reset all defaults, then click save.

Plug in your phone and BOOOM!

This was an easy fix and don't make much sense why it fixed it, as I had all the things in there customized to my preferance but now I will leave them alone.

Easy fix for me, hope this helps some one else.

There was no need to reboot afterwards either.

I had this exact problem, turns out I had Windows 7 Professional N.

To check right click on My Computer then go to properties, it should list the version of windows you have.

The "N" means its a euro version with no Windows Media Player installed.

To put it simply, your iPhone drivers wont work without Windows Media Player.

Go to google/microsoft, search for Win 7 64 N Media Player, and download/install Windows Media Player from Microsofts website.

As soon as I did this the iPhone 4 showed up instantly and installed the drivers fine.

I simply cannot believe that Apply don't check for this during an iTunes install, very basic installer guys, this cost me a lot of time and if Media Player is required (as it was in my instance) then why not check for its existence? Or is that too tricky a programming task? I know when coding I always get stuck whilst looking for a folder or a reg entry? Sloppy!

I followed Srikar's instructions. Didn't work. It seems that the driver, while it shows up, is not the active one used anymore. Reading other forums that have this issue I took the risk of following their advice:

1. Delete the Apple USD Driver

2. Reconnect your Iphone (mine is a 6Plus)

3. Windows automatically installs driver for iphone.

4. Autoplay and Win Photo Gallery work now.

The driver appears to be brand new to the discussion. In addition now when I select Printers/devices in control panel instead of Iphone USB icon I now have an Iphone icon like it used to be.

Hope this helps

Been a problem for a LONG time. Have tried just about every suggestion and sometimes the fix would work, but even then, it would only work temporarily. Was all prepared to buy another Apple cable (you all know they makes TONS of money off their "accessories," yes?), as often, after a fix worked once, the next time I plugged in my iPhone 4s, Windows once again didn't recognize it.

Just tried another fix that worked...and again, we'll see if it actually fixes the problem permanently or only for this time:

-Go to "Programs and Features" on Control Panel.

-Find "Apple Mobile Device Support." (Obviously, if that's not in your Programs and Features list, you have another problem.)

-Right click on it.

-Select "Repair."

Fixed the problem for me.

We'll see if this is a permanent fix (or reusable), but Windows recognized my iPhone immediately after the repair and I was able to download fotos.

Useful advices auto-xr. I did the same and my phone now shows under Portable Devices as Apple iPhone. It is also shown in my computer and I can see the photos folder.

The problem is that iTunes cannot find my phone. It doesn't show me any warning or error message, just the standard iTunes screen with no device connected.

Needless to say I tried so many different methods from reinstalling iTunes, restart, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and so on and none of them worked.
I really hope someone can help me with a solution to my problem.

P.S.: my phone is iPhone 6 Plus

Thank you very much!

Tried this but while updating the driver it shows me every time the message: "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device". Error Code 37. And it looks like a closed loop. Microsoft gives the solution to code 37 reinstalling the driver. When I reinstall it, it works again, and my computer can find the device but still nothing on iTunes.

I wouldn't recommend inviting random strangers to take over your computer. I answer posts when i have time around other commitments. Syncing up when it might also be convenient for someone else is too complicated.

Try explicitly removing the device where it shows in device manager, disconnect, then reconnect it and try to connect to the correct driver again.
