Also using an Epson RX640 and recently installed the latest apple software update for printer drivers - the printer has pretty much worked flawlessly for years yet now keeps throwing up the:

'Error:/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents / MacOS/rastertoescpll failed'

error message.

followed the process of resetting printers / uninstalling the gutenprint drivers / fixing permissions and restarting etc as recommended on Epson's site but no change.

Ok... hmmm may possibly have found a fix after reading the macfixit instructions here: MacFixIt

So I checked the 'backend' files he recommends but couldn't spot anything similar to his description in 'Console' while attempting to print... I did however notice this:

iMac24-2 EPSON_Stylus_Photo_RX640[993]: Error loading /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/MW/IraMW1.framework/IraMW1: dlopen(/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/MW/IraMW1.framework/IraMW1, 265): no suitable image found. Did find:\n /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/MW/IraMW1.framework/IraMW1: truncated mach-o error: segment __LINKEDIT extends to 148880 which is past end of file 148872

The following is just me experimenting so try at your own risk!

So I searched for and found the 'InkjetPrinter2' folder via - /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2

Then trashed all the files inside the 'IraMW1.framework' folder (as it contains the offending 'IraMW1' file) and replaced with the contents from the same folder in an older backup on an external HD - tried printing and ... so far working again!! (the older 'IraMW1.framework' folder contents included an extra file named 'CodeResources' )

I also tried re-installing the latest drivers from the Epson website and printer still works! Certainly pointing to the Apple update rather than the Epson one for me.

Next I'll download and reinstall the apple printer update to see if that stops it working again - just need to sort my broadband so the 800mb+ doesn't take half a day to download ... what a time to get adsl connection issues!

If anyone more knowledgeable would like to comment please feel free 🙂

Lil update - ok installed the apple epson driver update v2.7 again to confirm it was the issue and yep stops printing and throws up the same error. Just realised in my last post I talk as if the 2.7 update is 800mb+ ... got mixed up there - it's the 2.6 update people are being recommended to download to fix the problem that's 800mb+!

Ok so I can confirm using an Epson RX640 with my iMac - that going to /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/MW/IraMW1.framework and replacing the contents of the 'IraMW1.framework' folder with pre-update versions fixes the issue for me.

Hi

It's Valencay again.

Problem now sorted, thanks to all the replies.

Not being an Apple Geek I went along the lines of deleting all the Epson folders in Library, re-setting printers, turning off the printer, re-starting, re-installing the drivers from Epson, re-starting, and turning on the printer.

The problem seems to be with Epson drivers downloaded from Apple. They need a slap on the hand for putting Epson owners in this position. I was on the verge of thinking the only answer was to buy a new printer.

I have had quite a lot of advice from Apple and Epson but none of their ideas worked. I even went into the local Apple Genius bar and spoke to a technician who has heard of this problem with other Epson owners. Her advice was to re-store to the original Leopard OS. Made sense but that was too drastic for me so I'm glad I found this work-around.

Haha you're welcome Apple Allen!

Glad it's helping others too - I'd be really interested to know if it works on printers other than the Epson RX640 as well?

Feel free to link to this thread and recommend others try it if you think it'll help them 🙂

I guess the only other way to raise the profile is if it gets flagged as a correct/helpful answers thread - not sure if only the thread starter can do that though?

As an update to my situation - I've tried the recent 10.6.8 supplimental update from apple and it stopped my printer working again so replaced just the IraMW1 file this time with the one from my pre-updates backup and all working fine again! Just replaced that single file and tada! working. Interestingly Software Update is no longer detecting the 'need' to update with just the single file changed to the older working version.

Jul 28, 2011 8:42 AM in response to Apple Allen

Ok - just thought of something and it seems my hunch is right - it was never the original 'Mac OS X 10.6.8 update' that caused me the problem in the first place, it was Apple's 'Epson printer software update 2.7' ... so I checked the order of the latest updates installed ... it seems the 'Epson update 2.7' intalled again after the 10.6.8 supplemental update so no wonder printing was not working!

I've just tried installing the 10.6.8 suplemental update 1.0 again and this time printing still working fine - checked the date of the IraMW1 file and is still the older one that works.

Very brief version of my Apple update history since this all began:

• Installs Apple's Epson 2.7 update then Original OSX 10.6.8 update = Fails to print

• Tries all sorts then finds fix by reverting the IraMW1 file to an old version from a backup and printing is fine again

• Installs Apple's Epson 2.7 update again = Fails to print so I revert the IraMW1 to the old version and printing is fine again

• Installs OSX 10.6.8 supplemental update 1.0 then Apple's Epson 2.7 update = Fails to print so I revert the IraMW1 to the old version and printing is fine again

• Installs OSX 10.6.8 supplemental update 1.0 again = Prints fine

Should be pretty obvious by now that it's Apple's Epson 2.7 update causing the issue not OS X 10.6.8 ... for me at least!

Just a quick update - installed Apple's latest software update for Epson printers - version 2.8 and all working fine for me! Will give it a little while before overwriting my old backup but looking good so far.

Also checked the IraMW1 file which was causing the issue for me with update 2.7 and it is new in 2.8 so looks like they've fixed the issue. For anyone updating I recommend making sure to make a copy of your current working IraMW1 file (see above to find it) and keep it for a while just in case.

Happy printing!

Hi Amelia - frustrating to hear people are still struggling with this issue - unfortunately it's been so long since I had problems with this that I can't remember exactly the different processes to check. It may be worth your while 1st making sure you've tried uninstalling your printer drivers, restarting your mac and printer then reinstalling the drivers from Epson's website - if you want to try the IraMW1 file I can send it to you if you drop me an email (go to my profile to find it) This is obviously completely at your own risk so make sure you have a backup before changing files around! I've only tried it on my Epson RX640.

Cheers

Hello everyone,

I'm almost 100% positive I've been getting the rastertoescpll error because I've had "Vulnerability Protection" enabled in Norton Firewall.

When I turned on notifications for the vulnerability protection feature I noticed I was consistently getting a notice that "ARP Cache Poisoning" attacks were being detected.

After a while I figured this probably wasn't the case and looked around for more info. In my case at least I'm pretty sure disabling "ARP Cache Poisoning" under Vulnerability Protection fixed my printer.

I've tried everything in forums, etc. and I'm pretty sure a lot of people have the same problem and it's not necessarily Epson's or Apple's problem. I'm not sure when the ARP Cache Poisoning blocking/detection "feature" was added but it could be that this was an upgrade by Norton and suddenly the printer stopped working for a lot of people.

The following solution worked for me after trying everything else online.

1. Remove the problem printer

2. Uninstall Epson drivers, to do this use the software found on the epson website, this takes a while.

3. Reboot.

4. Run your disk Utility program found under Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility

5. Select the main HD, click "repair disk permissions" - Let this run until complete

6. Install the latest drivers for your printer from the Epson website.

7. Job done 🙂

Let me know how you get on.
