My guess, as I stated in passing above when I chimed in that I too have not been able to download anything from iTunes store on iPhone and iMac, is that this might be related to the major upgrade coming in a few months with iCloud. Since that is still in Beta, and a piece of it is already available to regular users (the iTunes in the Cloud, already "purchased" feature, that now allows us to download songs we already downloaded on other devices, as well as multiple times on the same device), it could be this is related to the engineering work being done on that. Similar to what happens on a road, when they upgrade the road: slowdowns, heavy traffic snarls, detours etc.

What Apple is attempting to do is a major overhaul of their entire internet related infrastructure. And this could cause such issues. And maybe should be forgivable.

It is at least possible, and since this very rare in my experience, I would not extrapolate a general rule/problem from this. At least, yet. If it happens many times, for long periods, and Apple still does not acknowledge, then, yeah, Houston, we have a problem.

@shakurav If that's the case, then wouldn't it be better if they do this when the majority of their users wouldn't be using iTunes? Like, in the middle of the night? I understand this is affecting people on a global scale, so I assume it would be possible for them to work on each of iTunes "bases" separately, ie work on North America at 3am while leaving other parts of the world alone, then work on other parts of the world at 3am in their respective time zones, etc. Especially since it's causing users to not be able to access iTunes and purchase things.

When the developers of a certain video game I play do weekly maintenance, they work on their North American servers from 3am - 11am then they work on their Oceanic servers from 3am - 11am their time. That way the majority of their players experience minimal game time inturruption. If that game company can do it, I'm sure Apple can as well.
