Black iPad Screen, just the backlight on...

You could try giving it a little bump against the top left corner (near the headphone connector). This resolved the issue for me, so I guess it's a loose contact. Ocasionally it needs a new bump to fix it again.

I'm in the middle of fantasy football, opening day and half way through the games it just turns off and the backlight won't come back on. I can sync, unlock...but can't type or see anything, the screen is black. I can notice the screen does turn on though. Any body have any idea? Is this covered by Apple? LAME

Had the same problem as Bruno. Turned the iPad off and let it sit for approximate 10 minutes. I tapped it lightly on the concrete floor, turned it on, and it came on. worked like new. Not sure if it was the turning it off for a while or the technical tap on the floor that fixed it.

you posted a quick fix to slow wifi on ipad by changing DCHP setting to Static.

It worked for me BUT how do you make Static your defualt (lock it in) setting? When I go back to my iPad and check network it is back to DHCP.

My daughters first generation ipad is doing the saem, black screen lights up in grey can hear sounds when plugged in etc but cannot get screen back on. Ive tried to restore on itunes but as she has passcode on it it wont connect to itunes but obviously i cannot enter passcode due to screen not working! Ive tried soft reste and scren flickers as tho its reset but no apple logo. it also did screen shot but stayed black on screen?

Had the same thing happen again, but no amount of smacking the upper left corner on a hard surface would resurrect my iPad 2.

So I went out and bought an iPad Air.

The story doesn't end there, though. I offered my 2nd gen iPad to my son, thinking he might send it in for repair and get a 64GB 2 for $200 or so. I decided to do a factory reset on it first, though, and the process seems to have magically brought my dead screen back to life. Not sure why, but I now have a working 2 and a brand new Air. I like the Air too much to return it, so if my son doesn't want the 2, it's getting posted on CL.

I have the same problem on my iPad wifi 1st gen,

I can still hear the music,in the right angle I can still see any button, the problem is there is no backlight, I tried the hard restore and the taps in the left corner with no luck...

any other idea on how to solve this?

The thump to the back headphone corner also worked for an ipad from my neighbours ipad2, thanks for this tip, I'm sure Apple would have charged them the full whack, rather than a firm whack ;-)

iPad did the same thing in the middle of the night while my wife was nursing our newborn. Blank, backlit screen. I tried doing the hard reset a bunch of times and got nothing. I was able to connect it to the computer and do a factory reset. In a fit a rage, I tried giving the upper right corner a good whack and voila . . . working iPad. Weird.

My iPad2 did the same thing. Reset, restore with iTunes did not do anything for the screen. Sound was working so I tried the thump by hand several times with no luck. Then I tried one 2 foot drop onto a carpet and voila...iPad works now!!! Thanks for the post and the information.

if this happened again and hard reset doesn't work , try to do hard reset but don't release the home button and the device will erase every thing and will be in the restore mode connect it to the iTunes and restore your backup on it

DId you drop it does it have a case some one i worked with said that her ipad got dropted by her 2 year old son and it did the same thing if you have apple care or any thing like that bring it to the apple store or call your warntee cmpney

HI everyone, I understand this is an old post but I just wanted to say that the backlight went out on my iPad 2nd gen about 8 months ago, was literally about to buy another one but decided to see if I could fix it. The bump on the corner worked for about 5 seconds then I dropped it (corner first) onto a carpeted area and my backlight came back. I'm so happy I don't have to waste my money. this thread was great and 100% helpful!!! Good luck to the next ones who read with who have the same problem.

Hi Everyone, I know this is an old post but had to put my dime on this too. i will admit that as i read this and found that people were "tapping", "Smacking" and "carefully dropping" their iPads, i thought i had truly crossed the line of silliness. But i gotta tell you honestly that i had tried EVERYTHING else, with no luck, so thought what the heck....

THE IPAD CAME BACK ON AND WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!!! i tapped the headphone corner of my wife iPad Air2 against my knee a couple times. (Ok, tap is generous. I smacked it good enough to make me wince a bit) and lo and behold suddenly the device came up with the Apple logo and rebooted as if nothing had happened.

Gotta hand it to $v3n.....hit a home run with this one. Thanks for that!!!!$v3n
