Importing Sony EX1 and F3 files

wouldn't it be a nice thing if we didn't have to stumble around begging for help when we go into a new application, I feel I need a white cane and a dog right now with FCPX.....Whatever happened to manuals?

So can I import files from my Sony EX1-R and the Sony PMW F3 directly or do they first have to run through Sony's XDCam Transfer?....Thanks!

I'm going to be trying this early next week with the EX-1. From what I understand you need to use Sony's XDCam Transfer program (which I've already loaded on my laptop) to copy the files locally. They then need to be imported into FCP X manually. I've heard that Apple and Sony are working to make this work the same as in FCP 7 - i.e. a direct import.

Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to respond to my original posting. Sadly the fact remains that it still isn't possible to import Sony ExCam files directly into FCPX, a major flaw in the programme whichever way you look at it. I can import these file into FCP Studio directly with Log and Capture without a problem, not so with the "new" FCPX. Why?

I am all too willing to accept the "leap forward" that Apple is trying to push us towards with their new iteration of FCP, but not to be able to import directly into the programme one of the major camera formats is just rediculous and something that should have been addressed, corrected, much sooner than now. Very disappointing, and I hope that this as well as many of the other "missing elements" of a so called "Pro' "application are addressed soon by Apple....Otherwise for me, and I suspect other FCP users, I will be brushing up on my Avid skills that have been pushed aside during these past years of FCP's dominance of the Pro' edit world.

Wake up Apple....if indeed this is something you wish or intend to do.

hey tom,

here are the specs relating to the strobing effect i see in the event window. From XDCAM Transfer the file specs are: Apple XDCAM EX 1080p24 (35 Mb/s VBR), Video Format: MPEG HD, Bit rate: 35 Mbps, Frame rate: 23.98p, aspect: 16:9, Size: 1920 c 1080

FPCX Project properties: Where do I find this info? My original import included footage shot with a Canon HDSLR and the Sony F3. The Canon footage does not have the same problem of shifting and strobbing.

Of course, you're right Tom....and in fact I have left word on "Feedback" a few weeks back.

An interesting discussion anyway.

I have recently shot with my F3 using the Wise S2 32gig cards and gave up trying to get the media into FCPX, reverted to working the job in FCP Studio simply because the media loaded right in without having to go through XDCam Transfer first. I'm sure that there's a solution down the road from Apple and Sony, but until then I for one will plod along with the Studio version of FCP.

Thanks again for everyone's participation in this thread.

Hi Mark, yes I have imported media from FCP Studio to FCPX, just to see if it would work, and it does. But frankly when I've got the work loaded and started in Studio I just stay there. I haven't done any serious editing yet in FPX, but what I have done, ( when I can get the media to load ), has been ok.

For now and for me though the "paying work" stays in Studio. That works, I'm familiar with it and I haven't had the time to re-learn editing using FPCX. I'm hoping Tom, ( Tom Wolsky ), has a FCPX book in the pipeline that will be yet another of his excellent guides to these Apple programmes......Do you Tom?

Regarding your question as to whether I've seen any weird effects on some FCPX images I have found in the past with FCP or Avid that it's best to output any part of your edit that exhibits any "weirdness" to finished format and then check it, most times the moraying or strobing goes away on final output.

If you are working in FCP Studio on a MacPro with a Kona or similar card then of course you can use a reference broadcast monitor to check to see if any aberrations will be on your final output too.....I don't think we can do that yet using FCPX, (?).
