Volume Icon remains on screen; volume stuck at 0

I have an iPad 2 (less than 1 month old) which now has the volume icon stuck in the middle of the screen. The volume is also stuck at zero, and the mute/unmute button does not work . In the sound settings 'Change with buttons is set to 'on'. If I change it to 'off' the only change is that the mute button shows the speaker symbol with the line through it for a second and then reverts to the unmuted symbol but at zero volume level immediately afterwards.

This started after charging it last night (through power adapter, not iMac).

I have tried switching off and on

I have tried a hard reset (home button + on/off button -> apple logo etc) repeatedly

I have tried plugging the iPad into an iMac (interestingly the icon goes away when the 'sync in progress' message appears, but then comes back)

I have updated the software version to 4.34.

Appreciate any help; thanks.

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.3

I've had the same problem as all of the above, the volume icon would suddenly appear in the middle of the screen and I couldn't remove it, etc.

The problem was solved for me somewhat elegantly. I took a simple binder clip (the black steel clips with silver steel openers) that can be purchased anywhere and clipped the bump by the sound control and let it stay clipped for a minute or so. Removed clip and I've not had a problem since. I wouldn't be surprised if the icon reappears again, but I do think a reclip will also solve the problem again.

Hope this is of help to all of us who've had this problem, which I hope Apple is addressing in future.

I got home tonight and turned my IPad2 on and noticed that the volume icon was always on. The volume is full blast, and if you try to turn it down, it goes back to full blast on it's own. I HAVE NEVER DROPPED MY IPAD, NOR HAVE I EVEN THOUGHT OF DROPPING IT. IT STAYS INDOORS IN A PROTECTIVE COVER, YET THERE IS AN INDENTATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUTTON. It is where the frame meets the glass. I think it's a design flaw. ANYBODY HAVE A SUGGESTION FOR FIXING IT?

ZOMG I know how to fix this. It may cost you. You can buy an iPad Keyboard for £56 at the apple store. Put youre iPad on it and there are sound volume buttons thta you can press. It's the only way. The apple store can't help you. GET A SECOND HAND ONE OFF OF EBAY - My friend got a seconds hand one on ebay and if it ever does it again jut put it on the keyboard.

I too now have this problem. iPad didn't get dropped or misused. It thinks the volume button is always on to lower the volume. Also, when I push the lower volume button, the iPad reboots. I've done soft boot, hard boot, accessibility, etc. Nothing works. The sound icon comes on / off as I use the iPad. Very annoying.

This obviously isn't an isolated issue. How about Apple make a software option to ignore the switch input? Make my iPad usable again...???

I used a very sharp small kitchen knife (paring knife). Use the blade part, not the tip, to very gently wedge between the glass and metal band directly adjacent to the volume rocker switch and slowly pry the metal case away from the glass. That freed my volume control rocker switch and immediately eliminated the volume icon from the screen. I have not had the problem again.

Used your suggested method with success! Our daughter dropped her iPad (that Santa left under the tree for her) and as luck would have it, it hit the edge of a step exactly where the volume control is located. Did I mention that the iPad was in the $80 Griffin case Santa also brought and it STILL dented?!?! Yep. Anywho...We can now adjust the volume using the assisted touch and the sound icon is no longer constantly showing. And best of all no more tears from our daughter and no worries on our part about repair costs!

My wife had almost the exact same dent!! Perhaps it's a weakness in the frame near the large volume button.

We combined a couple of the ideas here and eventually used an oyster shucker as our instrument. We kept the cover on and didn't so far pry, as push away the frame from the glass. We eventually used a metal pie knife to separate the body far enough that the volume works once again! The icon is gone and everything works.

Used a soft cloth to polish the rough aluminum. The few scratches are just a reminder to take care of the unit.
