Volume Icon remains on screen; volume stuck at 0

I have an iPad 2 (less than 1 month old) which now has the volume icon stuck in the middle of the screen. The volume is also stuck at zero, and the mute/unmute button does not work . In the sound settings 'Change with buttons is set to 'on'. If I change it to 'off' the only change is that the mute button shows the speaker symbol with the line through it for a second and then reverts to the unmuted symbol but at zero volume level immediately afterwards.

This started after charging it last night (through power adapter, not iMac).

I have tried switching off and on

I have tried a hard reset (home button + on/off button -> apple logo etc) repeatedly

I have tried plugging the iPad into an iMac (interestingly the icon goes away when the 'sync in progress' message appears, but then comes back)

I have updated the software version to 4.34.

Appreciate any help; thanks.

No clue is this will work but try plugging and unplugging headphones or earbuds in the iPad a few times. Restart is and see if that does the job.

The only other options I would suggest would be to close open apps in the task bar - double tap the home button - hold down on an icon until it wiggles - tap the minus signs to close the apps. Then restart the iPad.

The other option would be to restore ... I would exhaust all other possibilities first though.

The knife trick worked for me. I shut down the device and the SLOWLY worked a thin knife I the seam between the metal and the glass. Be careful with the knife, but if you try to gently push out the metal, the dent should push out enough to release the button. Note that you may have to work it a few times since the metal may bend back after you pull out the knife. Don't try to do it the first time as this may crack the glass. The glass is pretty strong but may break if you force it. It took about 5 tries of bending the metal but it finally got pushed out enough to free the button permanently.

Note that this does leave small telltale nicks on the metal so any Apple repair person might mark this as tampering with the unit and void any warranties, so do it at your own risk in case it doesn't work. Mine is out of warranty so i figured I'd

give it a shot. The knife I used was dull too, so be careful. Another, non-bladed metal tool would probably work too - perhaps a thin screwdriver used for electronics or glasses.

This certainly got my son (who dropped the iPad) out of some hot water.

Thank you so much for your help Southoak. My Ipad2 is now fully functional again!. Using a Swiss Army knife I was able to remove the dent in the middle of the sound button and all is well again. I was contemplating going somewhere to have the screen removed so I could repair it, but it feels so much better to have done it myself. Thanks again.

This may sound silly, but I had the same problem, but it's now completely fixed. How? I had installed the bluetooth folio keyboard cover backwards. The cover comes with an opening for the volume controls. If you insert the keyboard backwards like I did, you'll not only cover the volume controls, but "pinch" them, causing all sorts of problems.

Make sure your keyboard cover is installed correctly.

SOUTHOAK does it again! I used a paring knife as well. I pressed fairly hard with good backing from a solid table. I couldn't see the dent at first as it was very slight. I had dropped it on a well carpeted floor and it must have hit book that was lying at the side of the bed. Didn't think anything of it. Spent a couple of hours looking around. Also had strange side effect in that trying to adjust the sound when playing back a movie would cause it to jump out of the movie and start recording a new one. Very annoying when trying to troubleshoot the volume. All now behaving well.

WELL DONE SOUTHOAK!! Thanks.

I Started having this problem about a month ago. Went to local Apple Store. Went through the reset step, no help. cleared out a lot of Apps I was not using. Backed up iPad on laptop and went back to store and they cleared it and reloaded IOS and when it restarted the box appeared immediately. They gave me options which consisted of a new iPad. Decided to wait a few days and check around. Shortly thereafter I discovered that by pressing in the middle of the volume control button on the side the box went away. I did not have to do a restart as I had been doing. Decided I could live with that for a while. I continued to do this for a few days and the time between incidents seemed to get longer. About 4 or 5 days ago was the last time the box appeared. Apparently the repeated pressing of the button has cleared some dirt or debris or fixed something someway. But give it a try, it's cheaper than buying new and faster than doing a restart. Good luck.

It is common knowledge that apple devices like phones and ipads often have failures of their mechanical switches, be it the volume controls, the home button or the on / off button - yet Apple refuse to provide an easy IOS fix for the volume buttons. They know full well the failure rates of the switches.

This is a solution to problems with the ipad or iphone volume switches:

This fix does not involve mechanical repair of the faulty volume up/down switch.

This applies to all devices that use the standard iphone 30 pin dock connector.

1. Get yourself on ebay a 30 pin dock connector extension cable. It will have a male plug on one end and a female plug on the other. This allows you to easily connect the apple device to a external speaker that has its own built in amplifier with volume control.

2. Buy amplified speaker of some sort that is compatible with and has the 30 pin female apple dock plug.

3. Connect the amplified speaker via dock extension cable to the apple device - eg ipad.

The ipad will detect the presence of the external audio device and cut off the normal audio path to the ipad's internal speaker, feeding audio out of the dock port instead.

At the same time it will disable the ipad volume control switches, and prevent the large mute icon appearing on the ipad screen.

You can now use the ipad with any app that produces sound and control the volume with the external audio amplified speaker. The audio level will not be subject to the ipad volume switches so will be stable at what ever level you set with the external audio device volume knob. The volume will generally not be adjustable from within the app unless the app has a volume control feature built into it.

PROBLEM SOLVED. 😁
