Have to buy Lion twice?

I got around all this by creating a Lion dvd and booted on my SL server. Then it installed Lion+Lion server and kept all my SL settings.

However, it worked really bad for me so in the end I just wiped the disk, installed SL and then lion from appstore and finished with lion server from app store as well. The web module seems to be severly crippled though so Ill probably do a full wipe again and install SL server and restore my backups.

I start to see why Lion server is 1/10 of the price of SL server - its just a cub - not a Lion!

I think we all should refer to Lion Server as Lion cub server!

The same for me: I did purchase Lion on my MacBook Pro and was wondering why Apple would charge me twice for the Client when purchasing Lion Server on my Mac mini!

1. Purchase Lion Server on the machine you purchased already the client

2. Purchase the server again on your Mac mini

Be aware this is also the expected behavior when buying apps a second time. Although it is a purchase, it should not involve any payment as the store does recognize the item has already been purchased by this Apple ID. It will start to download Lion and put Lion Server to "waiting" until the Lion download of 3.74 GB has finished.

No need to reinstall your Server!

So far I did not yet get a second invoice and my iTunes balance is still as expected (1 x Lion + 1 x Lion Server) 😉

Ok, so to be clear -

- You purchased Lion initially from your MBP and installed it there.

- Then you purchased Lion Server from that same MBP, but didn't install it on the MBP? (Did you download it?)

- Then you purchased Lion Server again, from the Mini running Snow Leopard, accepting the Lion/Lion Server $80 purchase.

- But what actually happened was that Lion and then Server installed correctly on your Mini.

- And presently the result appears to be that you paid once for each product, Lion and Lion Server, and you have Lion installed on your MBP, and Lion/Lion Server installed on your Mini, and you haven't had to apply for any refund?

That sounds great if it works - Enterprise Sales hasn't gotten back to me.

Hmm, for me:

1. Bought Lion from MBP with account no@mail.all
2. Logged into the same account from the mini, (Lion already installed), and clicked on buying SERVER.
   -> What happend: Payed for Lion twice, for Server once
   Apple refunded the second Lion.
   
3. Server update went totally wrong, downloaded Lion again, and created a bootable USB-Stick, installed, and clicked on "INSTALL" Server (under the "PURCHASED" tab, and got another bill for Lion and Server!
   Apple refunded that to.

The AppStore is a little bit screwed up... 😉

Okay, I will try to shed some more light on this how you can get Lion Server without paying twice for Lion:

Problem

1. I presume you bought Lion on your MacBook Pro

2. If you try to purchase Lion Server on your Mac mini, you will be asked to pay a second time for Lion although you already purchased

Solution

1. Purchase Lion Server as well on the MacBook Pro where you already bought Lion

2. Do not install Lion Server on your MacBook Pro...

3. Go to the Mac mini and check both (Lion & Lion Server) are listed under purchases

4. On your Mac mini go and re-purchase Lion

5. It will download first Lion (3.74 GB) and then Lion Server (15.3 MB) - you may install at this time...

6. I checked and can confirm my Apple ID was charged only once per Lion & Lion Server

BTW, I can confirm the update went well for me except a few minor issues:

- Server Admin Tools need to be downloaded manually (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1419)

- In case you may use Active Directory binding and authentication you may need to rebind your server and redo the cleartext authentication (wiki for example) using 'sudo serveradmin settings teams:enableClearTextAuth = yes'

- People listing in wiki does not work for AD...

I think those are more or less some issue one can expect with such an update. Of course be prepared to spend some time to fix issues and have a full backup ready for the worst case!

Well, that didn't work for me at all.

I purchased Lion Server from the same MBP that I'd bought Lion from. Was charged $49.99.

Then I attempted to install Lion to the Mac Mini. Was prompted that I needed both for $79.98. Clicked ok, and yes, was charged $79.98 as well (verified on VISA statement). So now I've been charged twice for Lion, AND twice for Lion Server. Not a happy camper.

Today I got one invoice per Lion and one per Lion Server when I purchased them seperately on my MBP. Purchasing them again on my Mac mini, produced another invoice - but this time including a refund of 60.01 EUR where the total is 63.98 EUR, the due is now 3.97 EUR!

Looks like Apple has a lot of trouble in managing those purchases. But I am still trustful they will handle the issues to satisfy all demands - even though it may take a bit longer...

Maybe they have different procedures per AppStore country (I buy in the german store)?

I have to agree the process of 'buying' Lion Server is rather broken. In my case as I have Mac OS X Server Maintenance agreement for two XServes I got redemption codes for two free copies of Lion and Lion Server. The instructions did not say I had to redeem and download them on the servers themselves. So the first time I tried I did this on my desktop as I did not want to mess with a live server.

The 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Mac Pro I was using let me redeem both Lion and Lion Server codes but it would not download the Lion Server as it was not running (Snow Leopard) Server. When I tried re-downloading just Lion Server on an actual server later to try and get round this it tried to charge me and of course would not let me use the same redemption code again.

So far I (think) I have got round it by using my second pair of redemption codes on an existing Snow Leopard Server and have it appears got a good copy of the Server.app

It appears that Lion Server no longer does concurrent serial number checking so I should be able to in theory run this single copy on both servers.

So look like if you get Lion and lion server in a computer with SL server you only pay once and after can install lion and lion server in any machine at no extra charge if that machine have SL server or even if haven't it?

It appears so. Apple were clear that Lion Server required (under the license terms) upgrading from Snow Leopard Server but it appears that you must also 'buy' and download it on a running Snow Leopard Server. Although the actual installation can be done on an empty drive.

Apple charged me twice for Lion as well, despite me clicking install on the Lion entry. It seems that as soon as the server package is invovled, it goes into charge mode, and forget to check if you might already have bought Lion itself.

I got reimbursed for it within a couple of hours of asking Mac App Store support about the billing problem though.

Now that a couple of weeks have passed since the last post in this thread, it's time to update the "Correct Answer," as it is no lo longer correct.

The Mac App Store billing system has been modified to prevent double-billing of Lion (according to the AppleCare folks, who I called yesterday), but you still get the "you must buy both" message when you attempt to purchase the Server Add-On even if you've previously purchased the Lion Client. You will only be billed for one copy of Lion, and your Purchases tab will only show one copy of Lion. I know this because I bought Lion on July 20 and Server on August 11. Before clicking Buy, I called AppleCare just to be sure.

Just want to confirm that this is indeed the case now.

If you've bought Lion previously.

1. Sign in with your Apple ID (to the App Store)

2. Click Buy Now on Server

3. Click OK on "Buy Both" Prompt"

4. You'll get a second prompt stating "You bought Lion already, want server for $49.99? Click Buy"

5. Click OK (it should say "buy" but hey 🙂)

I had this joined purchase problem the other way around, and I decided to share my story.

1. I had Lion preinstalled, not visible in AppStore purchases

2. Then I purchased Server pack and installed it

Some day I wanted to purchase Lion to bind it to my appstore account (I needed clean install disk for my other Mac since I wanted to switch from 10.5 straight to 10.7).

3. When i clicked - using OPTION key to bypass "INSTALLED" status - on AppStore Lion I was prompted to purchase both Lion and Server. But of course I've already paid for Server on my current machine and was not interested in using it on my secondary machine!

The solution was simple.

4. Close AppStore

5. Run in terminal

"sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.bak"

It causes system version checker to look at pure Lion file "/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist"

6. Launch AppStore and try point 3 again. It allowed me to purchase Lion only and downloaded installer.

7. Run in terminal

"sudo mv /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.bak /System/Library/CoreServices/ServerVersion.plist"

To restore Server version info.

So it is possible to purchase Lion AFTER Server is purchased without having to request refund for duplicate of Server.
