Unable to install free Xcode 4.1 on Lion?

I've just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion and have also come to know that Xcode 4.1 is free for Lion users. I already have Xcode 3.x from my SL. I just upgraded to Lion. When I try downloading Xcode 4.1 from the MAS, it says downloading, and shows the status bar the same for several minutes, with no progress in download. Do I have to uninstall my older Xcode for Xcode 4.1 to download. Why is it staying in the download status forever? Thanks.

My situation was a little different - I also had trouble locating the download on my machine - it appears to have now been installed but I got a message saying to "log out of iTunes" before completing the installation - I was not in iTunes at all - I had to force the install to quit and then I had to do a system restart to get rid of the iTunes message - the developer's package appears to be woirking

There are several threads on the iTunes-issue with intalling XCode. You just need to open up Activity Monitor and quit 'iTunes Helper.'

Okay. So basically, it wasn't that it wasn't downloading Xcode 4.1 for me, just that it was downloading very, very, very slowly. In the end, it did finish downloading and I'm able to use Xcode 4.1 now. But, in the beginning since its so slow, you tend to think it's not downloading at all.

To my surprise, this actually worked for me too. On about my third click it started to downloaded.

Download/Install AppCleaner and Drag and Drop the old Xcode app 2 it then click on Delete then empty ur trash and install Xcode 4.1 for Lion from the Mac App Store!! lol

My only question now, is how to ceanly get rid of the the old XCode Installer?

Having an Xcode installer (4.2) in my Applications folder stopped me from installing a specific Xcode version (4.1), even though I'd uninstalled Xcode 4.2
