color calibrate on two VDU's after lion upgrade

Hi,

I have just upgraded my Mac Pro from Snow Lepeord to Lion. All seems to have gone well after the 33min upgrade process completed.

Just noticed that my two identical BenQ HDMI attached monitors are showing different colours (colors) / apprearance. I have tried to change the setting in Display parameters, but although two calibrate windows appear, the right (primary desktop) screen is the only one affected by any changes, even if I try to change the left screen options box.

If I create a new calibration profile, no matter whether I select it on the left or the right screen, you can not independantly select a profile for an individual screen.

Seems to be a problem that has just come with Lion. Has anybody else seen similiar issues, and know a fix or work around?

Just ran the ColorSync application and it reports an error with the dfault BenQ profile

When I Verify:

/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/BenQ V2400Eco-000009D1-0000-7D02-0000-544500000000.icc

Tag 'cprt': Text tag has an incorrect length.

Verify done - found 1 bad profile.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

Repair done - 0 out of 1 profiles fixed.

I had the same problem as the original poster; after upgrading to OS X Lion, I was no longer able to apply a color profile to my secondary display.

It seems that this is only a problem when OS X Lion is connected to two IDENTICAL displays, in my case two Samsung Syncmaster 226BW displays. I know this because while troubleshooting the problem, I swapped one of the 226BW displays for a Samsung Syncmaster 2043SWX display and the problem went away.

Nevertheless, there is a workaround; In order to select a color profile for the secondary display:

  • Select the color profile that you want to use for the SECONDARY DISPLAY through the primary display's preference window
  • Check off Mirror Displays in the Arrangement tab
  • Wait for the correct color profile to be applied to the secondary display then uncheck Mirror Displays
  • Select the color profile that you want to use for the primary display through the primary display's preference window

Your two displays should now have the correct color profiles applied. Unfortunately, you will need to do this every time you log off/restart the computer.

I have submitted a bug report to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and recommend that everyone experiencing this problem do the same. Hopefully if Apple gets enough negative feedback this problem will be resolved in 10.7.3

I think the problem is only related in case you have 2 identical screens like I have on my MAC pro 2011 with Lion 10.7.3. I have been in contact with X-Rite since I use the idisplay pro to calibrate the screens they also claim that it could be related to the fact that the sowftare does not see 2 screens and therefore gets confused to which screen to link the profile.

When I look in the colorsync util programm it only shows 1 display. see image. I have 2 monitors of the same type and brand attached but only see 1.

I would like to know if there is a way to fool the mac pro by renaming 1 monitor to something else so that he thinks there are 2 different monitors attached.

So far I have not found it.

Hi Bruno:

This doesn't make sense to me. How would automating the profile selection process have any effect on the fact that as soon as the profile for one of the displays is selected, the other display's profile immediatley changes as well? The problem that I am having (and apparently most of us) is that when using two identical model LCD displays, selecting a profile for one also changes the other. So it's impossible to have a unique proifile for each display.

Please explain how your script solves this.

Thanks

Hey Philip,

While we are both having problems applying unique color profiles to dual displays in OSX Lion, they are slightly different problems:

It seems the problem that you are having is selecting a color profile on Display 1 applies that profile to Display 1 and Display 2, and selecting a color profile on Display 2 applies that profile to Display 1 and Display 2.

With my problem, selecting a color profile on Display 1 applies that profile to Display 1, and selecting a color profile on Display 2 also applies that profile to Display 1. Regardless of which profile/display I select, I am unable to apply a color profile to Display 2.

However, for the specific problem that I am experiencing, there is a workaround:

In order to select a color profile for Display 2:

  • Select the color profile that you want to use for Display 2 through Display 1's preference window
  • Check off Mirror Displays in the Arrangement tab
  • Wait for the selected color profile to be applied to Display 2 (this may take a few seconds, but eventually both displays will load the selected color profile)
  • Uncheck Mirror Displays in the Arrangement tab (Display 2 will retain the color color profile just applied/mirrored)
  • Select the color profile that you want to use for Display 1 through the Display 1's preference window

Your two displays should now have the correct color profiles applied. Unfortunately, you will need to do this every time you log off/restart the computer. The Automator script that I created simply automates the workaround posted above.

Yep, definately something wrong with dual screen setup. I use Screenflow to record desktop activities and it will now only work with the primary vdu. You can select the second screen but it still only records the primary screen.

I think we need a patch !

Same color profile problem here - can't set new colour profile for my built in MacBook Pro screen. ColorSync ultility reports the same issue you have and is unable to repair. When I try to create a new profile in System Preferences, the new profile cannot be saved.

Definitely a problem that's new with Lion.

I have the exact same issue with my 2 identical Samsung 204T displays on Mac Pro.

Interestingly enough, if I substitute one of the displays with an old Samsung 204bw, everything works as it should - I can assign individual profiles do each display and /library/colorsync/profiles/displays gets 2 different syncmaster entries.

The moment I switch back to two 204T displays, the problem comes back. If I delete all entries in the above mentioned folder, only one Syncmaster entry comes back when booting with two 204T displays.

I looked back at this Mac Pro with Time Machine to see what it did previously under Snow Leopard, when everything worked properly. The above mentioned folder had two Syncmaster entries, one file name ending with 0, the other with 1. The naming scheme was also different from the one in Lion.

So it seems, that unlike Snow Leopard, the Lion can't tell two identical displays apart.

So - I read what you said about the fact that Lion treats filenames differently from Snow Leopart and I tried saving my calibration with a very simple title - 'calibration1' - and it worked. That was my problem.

I've now got a recalibrated lapytop screen and recalibrated external screen working just fine. Hope that works for you, too.

Thanks.

I have tried what you said, and although I can calibrate each display, and save a profile for each with a basic name (Benq1 and Benq2), after the calibration is complete, I can only select one of the two profiles, which is only then applied to display 1, even if I select the profile for dispaly 2 in display 2.

As michaeltm stated, the problem seems to be with identical displays. In my case I use spyder pro 3 to calibrate my screens, and each time I ended with on screen calibrate and the other one back to the build in profile.

I finnaly managed to have both screen calibrated. How I managed to to it :

I calibrated the first screen. Then the second screen, at the end of the calibration (when everything seems OK) I closed the spyder pro software and the second screens came back to the build in non calibrated profile.

I the screen preferences window, I activated "recopy video" (sorry I don't know exactly how this is translated in an English osx, so both screen displayed the "first" and calibrated screen. Then I deactivated the "recopy video" and then both screen were calibrated using the "first" screen profile. In my case as the displays are identical, it's OK.

I hope Apple is monitoring this thread and will provide a fix with the upcomming update.

I had a similar problem, with ColorSync Utility revealing a problem with the iMac-00000610-0000-9..D40.icc file.

ColorSync Utility could not repair it.

Fortunately,I had Snow Leopard backed up on an external drive (I'm using Lion now), so I was able to replace the dodgy file. If anybody has a problem with the same ColorSync Profile file I have mentioned,I will gladly email the file to whoever needs it.

I'm having the same problem and ran the ColorSync Utility's repair function and it was unable to fix all three profiles that are broken.

Hi Chris,

I have checked Snow Leopard on my external drive for you and, sorry, but the only Displays info on it is for my iMac.

I presume you don't have an external drive with Snow Leopard backed up ? But if you do have a back-up, the solution would be to drag the Displays file into Lion.

To repair the profile:

"Get info" about the xxxxx.icc in Finder, autenticate as admin in the info window and choose read/write permissions on the profile.

.icc profile are in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles or in /~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles folders.

In Lion user (home) user Library is hidden. Revelate and choose it clicking alt key together with "Go" on Finder...
