color calibrate on two VDU's after lion upgrade

Hi,

I have just upgraded my Mac Pro from Snow Lepeord to Lion. All seems to have gone well after the 33min upgrade process completed.

Just noticed that my two identical BenQ HDMI attached monitors are showing different colours (colors) / apprearance. I have tried to change the setting in Display parameters, but although two calibrate windows appear, the right (primary desktop) screen is the only one affected by any changes, even if I try to change the left screen options box.

If I create a new calibration profile, no matter whether I select it on the left or the right screen, you can not independantly select a profile for an individual screen.

Seems to be a problem that has just come with Lion. Has anybody else seen similiar issues, and know a fix or work around?

Just ran the ColorSync application and it reports an error with the dfault BenQ profile

When I Verify:

Checking 60 profiles...

/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/BenQ V2400Eco-000009D1-0000-7D02-0000-544500000000.icc

Tag 'cprt': Text tag has an incorrect length.

Verify done - found 1 bad profile.

When I Repair:

Searching for profiles...

Checking 60 profiles...

/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays/BenQ V2400Eco-000009D1-0000-7D02-0000-544500000000.icc

Tag 'cprt': Text tag has an incorrect length.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

Repair done - 0 out of 1 profiles fixed.

To repair the profile:

"Get info" about the xxxxx.icc in Finder, autenticate as admin in the info window and choose read/write permissions on the profile.

.icc profile are in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles or in /~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles folders.

In Lion user (home) user Library is hidden. Revelate and choose it clicking alt key together with "Go" on Finder...

I managed to fix all the issues by simply renaming the files located in ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles. It seems the error is that the names are too long. Not sure how this happened but it worked for me. I suggest copying the profile somewhere first in case it doesn't work for you.

Also, I initially got an error message when there was a space in one of the profile names, so they probably don't accept any special characters, spaces, etc.

I am only using the main monitor on my iMac 27" however, I was having profile problems also. I did report it to Apple. All profiles were messed up; the ones I had created, the ones I just re-created and the default imac profile.

I did repair it in colour sync, and although after 3 tries it reported all repaired, only the default profile gave a decent colour. Every new profile I make turns out dark, contrasty and reddish. Mind you I am using the Apple Monitor Profiler because upgrading to Lion made my Xrite Monaco Optix profiler obsolete. Guess I will be profiler shopping tomorrow. Anyhow, the supplied profiler has always been good in the past, almost identical to the Xrrite profiler.

Apple needs to fix this fast, we make our money off these machines and it is unacceptable for such errors and long waits for a fix. My clients do not want excuses, just beautiful photographs.

Moral of the story is, maybe the default profile will work until the fix comes in.

I had the same problem as the original poster; after upgrading to OS X Lion, I was no longer able to apply a color profile to my secondary display.

It seems that this is only a problem when OS X Lion is connected to two IDENTICAL displays, in my case two Samsung Syncmaster 226BW displays. I know this because while troubleshooting the problem, I swapped one of the 226BW displays for a Samsung Syncmaster 2043SWX display and the problem went away.

Nevertheless, there is a workaround; In order to select a color profile for the secondary display:

  • Select the color profile that you want to use for the SECONDARY DISPLAY through the primary display's preference window
  • Check off Mirror Displays in the Arrangement tab
  • Wait for the correct color profile to be applied to the secondary display then uncheck Mirror Displays
  • Select the color profile that you want to use for the primary display through the primary display's preference window

Your two displays should now have the correct color profiles applied. Unfortunately, you will need to do this every time you log off/restart the computer.

I have submitted a bug report to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and recommend that everyone experiencing this problem do the same. Hopefully if Apple gets enough negative feedback this problem will be resolved in 10.7.3

Thanks Bruno: very interesting: I too am running two identical displays (Left and Right) with the twist that I have a third display as well (Center.) The left & right are samsungs and the center is a viewsonic (I have two video cards in my MacPro.)

I can set a profile on the center display no problem, but when I assign a profile for the left samsung the right one changes and vice versa.

I tried your tip about using mirroring mode to set the secondary profile but both profiles would change regardless of whether I was mirrored or not. I disconnected the center diaply just to see if that had an effect: no change—I still can;t choose a different profile for the left and right displays.

I'm curious if anyone else if having luck with Bruno's suggestion, and I'd love to hear from anyone who is running three displays especially.

Thanks

Hey Philip,

I don't know how to help with the third display, but I should be able to help you troubleshoot the problem with the two displays.

Although I have two identical displays, one of them has a pronounced bluish tint, necessitating the use of a different color profile for each display. Using System Preferences in 10.6.8, I had been able to select different color profiles for each display, and everything looked great.

However, starting with 10.7 and continuing through to 10.7.2, I am unable to select a color profile for my secondary display; I have tried to change the setting in System Preferences, but although two display profile windows appear, the right (primary) display is the only one affected by any changes; if I try to change the settings on the left (secondary) display, the right (primary) display reflects the changes. Is this the problem that you are experiencing Philip?

In order to see if the fix will work for you, I would first disconnect the Viewsonic display and make sure that both Samsung displays are connected to the same video card.

Then in the color tab in display preferences in the PRIMARY display, select the color profile that you want for the SECONDARY display. This should apply the desired secondary display color profile to the primary display, making the primary display look off.

Now click on Mirror Displays; your primary display should be mirrored to secondary display and after 1-2 seconds, you should notice the color profile on the secondary display change to the color profile you had selected in the previous step. Is this the case for you? The secondary display should now have the desired color profile applied; the primary display will still look off.

Now uncheck Mirror Displays; your secondary display should retain the desired color profile; at least it does for me. Finally, in the color tab in the PRIMARY display, select the color profile that you want for the PRIMARY display and quit system preferences. You should now have both desired color profiles applied to both displays.

It's a lot of steps, but just make sure to make all of your selections on the primary display. If you can get this work for you, the next step would be to plug the Viewsonic back into your second video card and apply the desired color profile to that display. Hopefully the Samsungs will not revert back. Unfortunately, you will have to do this each time you restart/log out, so hopefully a more permanent fix is forthcoming.

Has anyone else been expereincing this problem using two identical displays?

Hi Bruno and thx for the reply.

Regarding your instructions above: "Now click on Mirror Displays; your primary display should be mirrored to secondary display and after 1-2 seconds, you should notice the color profile on the secondary display change to the color profile you had selected in the previous step."

It seems like you are able to select a profile on one display and the other one does NOT change immediately,

In my case, when I select "profile_x" on the primary OR secondary display, the other display profile immediately changes as well. This occurs whether I am in mirroring or not.

I attempted to follow instructions but no matter what I did, both displays use the same profile.

Let me know if this makes sense.

Thx

Hey Philip,

Unfortunately it would seem that we are experiencing different problems.

I was unable to apply a color profile to my secondary display; although I could select different color profiles on both displays, color profiles would only be applied to the primary display, i.e. selecting a color profile on Display 1 applies that profile to Display 1, and selecting a color profile on Display 2 also applies that profile to Display 1.

From what I gather, the problem you are having is that selecting a color profile on Display 1 applies that profile to Display 1 and Display 2, and selecting a color profile on Display 2 applies that profile to Display 1 and Display 2, correct? Do I have that right? Do you also experience this problem when running just the Viewsonic and on Samsung display? When I tried two different Samsung displays in OS X Lion, everything behaved as one would expect; it appears, for me at least, that the problem only occurred when running two identical displays.

Precisely. And it only happens with the two identical displays: I can select individual profiles for either Samsung and the Viewsonic, and at home with a MacBook Pro 2010 and a different Viewsonic, I can also select the appropriate profiles. So it's only when running two identical model displays that the profile bug appears.

Thanks Bruno.

Has anyone else been expereincing this problem using two identical displays?

Bruno

Bruno, I think I have the issue.
I just upgraded to Lion. After the install was complete I noticed the color was WAY off. Knowing I had recently updated my icc profiles with my X-rite on SL10.6.5, I thought I would assign those profiles again. But every time I select one on my secondary, the primary changes too. They are a pair of SyncMaster 245BWs. So identical displays.
