Problem with Time Machine backup

Hi all,

i've been really excited about Lion and managed to get it and install it in under 50 minutes!

It works great, even with my Office:Mac software, antivirus software and so on, fantastic considering other people have had issues.

The one issue I seem to have is Lion working with its own application! Namely Time Machine!

I have a 3Tb Western Digital My Book Live NAS which I bought a few weeks ago. I only use it for backing up my Macbook Pro and my Wifes Macbook and its been faultless with Time Machine, however when I try and continue running this with Lion I get an error saying;

The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features

From what I can find on the web this seems to be something to do with the NAS as apposed to Time Machine however I would have thought this would have been addressed before people like myself had the problem - After all i'm sure everyone will agree, back-ups are extremely important!

If anyone has any suggestions how I can fix this I would be greatful

Matt

My last msg was posted inadvertently and was incomplete. So, can I still use Time Machine to create a back up on my external WD hard drive? If noy, I'll skip the lion upgrade.

If it's a USB or FireWire external HD, yes.

If it's a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device, WDs need an update to be compatible with Lion. See #C16 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

I have a similar problem. My external WD HD connected via usb to airport extreme

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple. See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

TIME MACHINE CAN NOT FINISH THE RESERVE COPY.

THE DISKCOPY FILE '/VOLUMES/BACKUP PETER-2/IMAC OF PETER JANSEN.SPARSEBUNDLE WHICH IS USED FOR RESERVECOPY, IS ALREADY BEIING USED.

See #C12 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

But why did it work in Snow Leopard?

And at the moment I am using the partition of my MBP , which is shown in Time machine preferences of my iMac, on the same HDD. And it is working!

PROBLEM SOLVED!

NO ONE WILL BE EXTORTED ANYMORE!

All you have to do is turn on DHCAST128 support:

1. Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and do:

sudo chmod o+w /Library/Preferences

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_host_prefs_version -int 1

Now restart your computer.

2. From Finder, select an AFP server, or use “Connect To…”. This will cause the AFP Client to create the full preferences file

3. Launch Terminal again and do:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array “Cleartxt Passwrd” “MS2.0″ “2-Way Randnum exchange”

sudo chmod o-w /Library/Preferences

Now restart your computer.

Note: To add a “DHCAST128″ to the disable list, use

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleShareClient afp_disabled_uams -array-add “DHCAST128″

THE END

Yes, we have to wait for the first Lion patch.

Went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they told me only 2011 Macs work with Time Machine.

Since 95% of the macs that use time machine are prior to 2011, I can't understand them pushing this out without proper notice.

If my internal hard drive goes down in August, then what?

Glarring omission.

I see the post from DH18 ....looks good......but for what type of system is this for. BE CAREFULL.

If you go to my post you will see the answer. I use Ubuntu and Webmin on my Proliant server DH18's fix is a NoNo.....Its all well and good just going for the fast fix but that is false economy. As you will all see you just need to wait for a simple patch from apple to make it work. I have been horrified at the number of people who are desperate to back up stuff to their drives etc. You would think everyone works for the CIA and all the info is super sensitve....it isn't.

Calm Down its only a glitch.

As I say in my post, use some cheap DVD media fo a short time. Apple will go a long way in customer appreciation when they resolve the connection issue. Many have said they just want to increase sales of their own products and cloud server, who knows?

For the time being use the old fasioned way. You cant go wrong.

Cheers

Adenda>>.. Milions of people and businesses have non Apple back up systems and Apple will not want to alienate them so I am sure and expect a fix soon......And since Lion I ahve no flipin spell check on FF whilst looged in to Apple Forum. All this money for this technoligie and htey cant even get 'smellcheck right.

And dont't start me on the i that should be I.

As a loyal Mac user for 21 years, I don't understand why Apple couldn't at least have warned people that if they had AFP type backups, they might be affected. Same with the hard drive company.

I have a Seagate GoFlex Home backup for my two Apple computers. Of course, I was blissfully unaware of this problem until after I upgraded to Lion on both computers. Then, as luck would have it, my main computer's drive crashed and I had to take it to the Apple Store for a new hard drive. Now I need that Time Machine backup that can't be accessed from the GoFlex Home due to this issue.

August? September? November? Outrageous! I am mad as heck at both Apple and Seagate for keeping faithful users in the dark about this problem.

Apple has dropped the ball on some things, but this isn't one of them. Developers and 3rd-party vendors have known Lion was coming for at least a year; it was officially announced in November; and they've had access to the requirements and beta versions for several months. These changes were not "slipped in" at the last minute, either; Developer testing may have begun earlier, but when the AppleSeed testing started in February, those NASs didn't work.

There's no way Apple can keep track of all the software and hardware (printers, scanners, NASs, etc.) that 3rd-parties sell, much less which ones are compatible with what.

One thing you'd think Apple could do is provide a central place for 3rd parties to post compatibility. I don't think any maker does that, though, possibly for legal reasons. There are some independent groups doing it for software. Here's one: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

There is that matter of a possible unreliability, so i made one backup on my internal hdd in the iMac.

Not a very good idea. 😟

Use an external HD for secondary backups. When (not if) something awful happens to your internal HD, you risk losing both the originals and backups.

See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

But I do have a backup on an external disk. The Time Machine puts its backup's on my external disk.

And I have one and only one TM backup on my 2nd internal disk.

Using another ext disk seems a bit overdone to me.

Besides the stuff that is on my computer is not that important. If it gets lost , in an extreme event, it will be a little troublesome but can be overcome.

ps: it seems that spelling correction is not woking in this reply editor, in SL there was a spelling correction.

Is there a way to get it working?
