Problem with Time Machine backup

Hi all,

i've been really excited about Lion and managed to get it and install it in under 50 minutes!

It works great, even with my Office:Mac software, antivirus software and so on, fantastic considering other people have had issues.

The one issue I seem to have is Lion working with its own application! Namely Time Machine!

I have a 3Tb Western Digital My Book Live NAS which I bought a few weeks ago. I only use it for backing up my Macbook Pro and my Wifes Macbook and its been faultless with Time Machine, however when I try and continue running this with Lion I get an error saying;

The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features

From what I can find on the web this seems to be something to do with the NAS as apposed to Time Machine however I would have thought this would have been addressed before people like myself had the problem - After all i'm sure everyone will agree, back-ups are extremely important!

If anyone has any suggestions how I can fix this I would be greatful

Matt

But I do have a backup on an external disk. The Time Machine puts its backup's on my external disk.

And I have one and only one TM backup on my 2nd internal disk.

Ah, ok, I didn't know that.

Be sure to exclude that second HD from Time Machine, via TM Prefs > Options. Time Machine won't back up those backups either way, but it may take it a very long time to bypass it.

ps: it seems that spelling correction is not woking in this reply editor, in SL there was a spelling correction.

Is there a way to get it working?

I have trouble with it, too. 😟 Sometimes I can get it working by clicking the "abc" with checkmark icon at the right of the toolbar.

Do what I did, put your Mac install disc and use time machine to set your computer to the day before you installed Lion. It will take a long time, 10 hours for me, to revert back to shoe leopard. And then just wait for western digital or who ever made your NAS drive to fix the firmware. I know you want Lion, but I think I can wait a little longer to wait for the fix before I install it again. Now NAS works like it did before Lion, as well all PPC apps too.

Rolf:

I feel your pain... This issue stopped me cold on an upgrade to Lion.. I contacted SeaGate (I have a GoFlex Desk 1.5T device) and they told me "NO CHANCE WERE THEY GOING TO ISSUE A SOFTWARE FIX". SO, with that info in hand, I still run Snow Leopard and will until this gets fixed OR stay where I am.... Apple, Seagate, WD, who cares?? Just get the problem fixed or else.

It's just like the other minor 'glitch" that we have coming towards us like a speeding train... NO ONE on a Mac will be able to use iCloud UNLESS they have upgraded their Mac to Lion... hhuummm...... That doesn't cover very many users does it?? Hey Stevo ??? Astounding.....

This whole Netatalk issue is getting ridiculous. There are two layers of responsibility here.. Apple should never have implemented a protocol from NetAFP if NetAFP was going to violate the GPL. Apple is way too large to have such meanial and dishonest company as NetAFP manipulate its users this way. Its time for Apple to apply some pressure. As for NetAFP this is nothing short of extortion towards NAS manufacturers. All of the NAS companies affected by this need to start applying pressure on NetAFP or Apple needs to develop its own open source protocol so scumbag companies like NetAFP can't get away with this.
