Lion Finder sidebar color?

I am typing from iPad today so can't check directly but what I did was to use Automator to create a new workflow.

Far earlier in this post there are links to a guide on now to install SIMBL and download the color icon plug in for it.

If you can't find it let me know and I will find it and repost. you can generally find it via web search For eg I just found this but in iPad safari so can't confirm.

Assuming you installed SIMBL and downloaded the plug in and put it in the correct SIMBL folder......

When you start up your computer next time however you lose the color again so this is what you do to restart the finder to restore the icons.

In the Automator application group in the library (might be in utilities but you can search for it), there should be an action called "Run Shell Script. "

Drag this across and add this line

killall Finder

Save this workflow as an app and I saved mine in the apps folder with the others.

In system preferences go into users and add this "app" to your apps that run at log in (log in items).

When you first power up there is a fraction of a second delay as the finder restarts must after it starts (pardon the grammar).

Note you can copy your home made app to other machines too.

I too want colour in my sidebar, Apple. It's MY sidebar, let ME decide. Eh? Please?

In the meantime, I REALLY don't want to have to install the crappy SIMBL bugware... Has anyone found another (non-SIMBL) way of achieving this, please?

As reported elsewhere, Apple appears to be reverting to the aloof control-freakery that characterised the first Jobs regime... The more successful it gets for its sharholders, the worse it gets for its Mac users. There seems to be some sort of inverse relation going on (e.g. see the myriad of threads about wifi connectivity problems in SL and Lion).

Ho-hum.

In this article, OSX made it in to the list of bad examples with the switch to it's new grayscale icons. Just next to Microsoft's "Metro" UI

Its funny how so many people fight that they like the new sameness grayness blandness. There was a reason some people gravitated toward a mac in the first place. The visual people found everything so much more easy on a mac. It spoke their language. The other people used PCs and loved how they worked. For some reason, they forgot where us original people came from and are trying to turn us into PC people. That's not right. We don't all see and think the same. We are different and need a computer that speaks our language. So sad to cripple us.

Sometimes it feels like (those new?) Apple designers try to copy those who tried to copy the original Apple design style. And now they got trapped in their own clean-and-consistant bubble/hype. Many things went south with Lion.

In his Keynote 2000 Steve announced OSX. One of the key features was the UI for which he said "every app depends on killer graphics". I don't think that in 2012 this statement is outdated at all. But it's not easy to make things functional and pretty at the same time. You need skilled people, not only Photoshop experts.

i don't understand why i am given the option to change the appearance between "Blue" and "Graphite" in System Preferences but not to get my color back...this is providing a constant stumbling point for me in terms of my visual workflow.

And keep your fingers crossed for Mountain Lion. They will not be reintroducing it into Lion I wouldn't think, heading towards almost a year old OS that is about to be superceded again.

I agree that this new feature is really BAD. Apple dropped the ball by making the sidebar icons harder to distinguish. At least give us a choice!

Kit is not a new feature, it is almost a year old. You can always revert to Snow Leopard if you miss them that much.

I wish it were that easy Pete, alas it is not.

Apple has forced this down our throats, if you but a new Mac now there is no way to use SL, period.

Well maybe if you can flash the Firmware back to SL build.

For Mac users to get to the cloud Lion is required (ugly as it is and buggy at best) so if the iCloud is desired then a cheap MacBook or Air for LIon and the iCloud and a big bad iMac for SL so work can be done.

That is what I did and other than the cost of a second hand Mac that can run Lion it wasn't to costly.

The lack of color, Launch puke, hidden needed libraries and the goofy way apps like to slide around the screen just makes me wonder who was on drugs when this happened.

I have applied as many third party hacks as I can find useful to make it somewhat better but the underlying problems are too hard to get around.

I use LIon just a tad more than I do Windoze and that is maybe twice a year.

So to answer the 'just revert to SL', where have you been? And just what Mac are you using?

One should have facts to backup statements not wishes.

If it is so important, trade down, run Snow Leopard and Lion and everybody's happy. I have five MBPs all running Lion and have dumped SL from most.

You have choices if colluded icons effect your workflow that badly.

That is the choice that I made. I returned the Imac I bought with Lion(it would not run SL) on it and instead bought the newest refurbished mac I could that still ran SL! Making something different (ie gray icons) does not mean better. With Lion I thought I was back in OS 8.

My issue is more than a preference problem. I have a vision issue that makes it hard to distinguish between grey icons. With the colored icons I can find what I need instantly.

Trade down. Wow, now why didn't I think of that. That should work only I need the boost in processor and RAM.

That is like telling me to buy a 2000 Ford because it came in the color I wanted. Never mind it doesn't have the other features.

I agree with Mike, it is more than pretty, it is a matter of ease of use, something Apple has pushed forever.

Now they moved where things are, hid the user Library (stupid that), made it all a washed out gray so that one is never sure if something is selectable or not.

Then all the help files aren't or way out of date so that they are useless.

All about Hope and Change, I have seen enough of that nonsense.

Apple, IMO, really stepped in the stuff here and made a M$ decision. Push the trash and see how well it goes over.

With all the new converts because of the iPhone/iPad new Mac users may not care so much, don't know any better.

We users that have had color on our Macs since system 6 (at least) do know better.

Lion, iTunes and iPhoto now sport the gray, ugly as sin, plus Apple seems to think that 'new' is always better. Take iMovie, that went right in the toilet after iMove HD. It really is bad and hard to use, although I have seen a few small improvements.

The same with FC, crash and burn baby.

So if you like Lion as it is, good for you, take it home with you.

Me, I will switch to something else when this Mac dies and needs replacing.

No wonder Apple stock is flying like a brick.
