Seriously no key repeat in Lion?

This has to be the most ******** thing I've ever seen. Only certain keys that apple has deemed repeat-worthy repeat when you hold them down. As someone who supports unix systems and is in VI a LOT, this is simply unacceptable! Make it a configuration option!

Funny. All of the characters I think anyone would ever really want to repeat, seem to repeat just fine.

I'm sorry. I knew about this feature on the iPad, but I had no idea it was now on Lion. I think it's great!

We're all really happy that every character YOU want to repeat is supported. Now go troll somewhere else.

The keys match up to the ones that offer accented versions. It seems different programs treat this differently depending on whether they've been upgraded to support Lion's APIs. This would explain why key repeat works fine in Terminal but not in Firefox or Chrome, for instance. In TextEdit, where accents are supported, you're presented with the accent menu.

Citing your other post, did you update to the latest version of Pages? For the sake of consistency I would expect it to offer you the accent menu there too.

Btw, in Pages these are the keys that reapeat and the ones that don't....

That, I'm happy to report, has a fairly simple solution. Go to the More Gestures tab of Trackpad in System Preferences. Change "Swipe between pages" to use three fingers instead of two.

Just going to reply to this and agree. Lots of dumb decisions made in Lion in its current form. They seriously need to allow customization of gestures like another user posted also. I can't three finger navigate in firefox which is lame.

I'm trying to be constructive. Your original question was about working with vi sessions on remote unix systems. Key repeat works fine in the Terminal when running vi on remote unix systems:

Key repeat for alphabetical characters does not work in most other applications. It does work for control and punctuation characters that are the most likely to be repeated.

I can't make key repeat work in every application, nor would I want to. I frequently work in other languages so this is a significant enhancement for me. Do you really use key repeat in applications other than Terminal? If so, which ones?

I'll have to try that. The setting doesn't make any sense though, why is switching to 3 fingers on that gesture correct the issue anyway?

I was really excited about Lion and made the decision to upgrade on release day. I have never done that before, in the past I have always made it a rule to wait a few months after an OS release for patches to come out. This is what we all get for being impatient and buying into the hype...

etresoft,

If you would read the thread,I've already answered this, so I won't go into it again...

But why would Apple remove a feature I've been using on every platform since the beginning of computers and not provide a way to turn it back on? Forget who does what and why... Everyone has their own thing. Maybe my therapist said repeating the letter hhhhhhhhhhhhhh in TextEdit would make me not want to strangle people... It doesn't matter. You don't use it, but I and many other people have relied on this feature for a VERY LONG TIME.

Sure, there are likely MORE people who want the accents than key repeat... I get that. But it should be a SETTING that one can toggle.

I personally think wallpapers are pretty useless... Doesn't mean I wouldn't back someone up who liked them if Apple decided they didn't need it anymore.

yes.. I see his status... but he's not reading the entire thread.. and posts like "All of the characters I think anyone would ever really want to repeat, seem to repeat just fine." and asking things that I've already answered in this very thread are not helpful. I see he's been active in being helpful quite a bit on here and I respect that... This just isn't one of those times.

The problem is that different users have diffeent angles and needs. The question of which apps would be more useful with the choice of soecial accents, characters, etc, is a valid one, but doesn't take into account that many users already have easy access to those characters due their keyboard layouts and end up with a duplication of features.

So, if one types frequently in foreign languages, that person would be better served using a keyboard layout that addrrsses that need in a better form, such as US International - PC layout. However, if one uses special characters rarely, why forcing them to use a new feature taking away another one (normal key repeating) that they, the users, have used and taken for granted for so many years.

There should be a keystroke to enable choosing a special character - the feature itself is vey clever. Bt taking away the ability to repeat keys is definitely very intrusive of Apple.

All you can do is submit feedback to Apple. This is a change they meant to do, not a bug. Apple isn't known for making their systems highly configurable. They are known for picking their own path to the future and sticking to it. Lion is a brand-new OS with a fair number of bugs. I can't imagine this feature would be implemented anytime soon. If you want to use Lion, you will have to work with your therapist to find a new treatment.
