Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

William, you are right of course but these days hypothetically unstable computer with internet > stable computer with no internet.

For what's it worth, I've been using a MBA with backwards kext for a day now and it has been rock solid so far.

It's all fun until something a back-level kernel extension calls ust happens to now be code that does something like format a disk.

It doesn't happen often, but it certainly can, and if newer code expects more information to be passed in additional parameters… well, really bad things may occur.

As I said, if you want to do this, fine, just be aware that really, really bad things could occur as a result; at your own risk in huge, mile high flashing letters.

I think formatting a drive is a bit of a strech... 0.001% chance that the computer will crash and require a reboot at an inappropriate time, losing all my unsaved work, sure, but not a format 😉

It's an extreme example, but in short you're possibly executing random code or even data as, depending on the method with which the back-level kernel extension was developed, it could call routines that no longer exist, that now rely on other parameters being passed, that have moved slightly in the kernel because of code being added or removed, and so on.

It's a little like having a friend's phone number written down somewhere, losing touch with them, coming back across it and expecting that you will still be able to reach your friend by calling that number decades later; they may still have that same phone number but these days the odds aren't in your favor. As a result who knows who'll you reach, if anyone.

All of what their so called trained Apple Care support team has to offer on this one MAIN AND MOST TRAGIC FLAW IN LION, is all utter nonsense. None of it is a fix, none of it. If Lion factory installed on new macs shipping is as tragically flawed as any form of updating or clean installing, Apple is in HUGE trouble.

I imagine that they would be addressing this mass problematic OS faster, if the bulk of their fortune was not in iPhones and iPads and a lot of other STUFF that is irrelevant to any customer that simply WANTS TO OWN A COMPUTER, NOT AN IPADPUTER VERSION OF ONE.

I do not understand, nor do I care to even try to understand why apple took this direction for their computers.

The OS reeks of hidden apple information gathering. The way everything is tied into them having control of your os, your system, your files, your movments on the internet, ALL OF IT.

Hmmm, What is the latest LINUX version out that I hear is running PERFECTLY?

Friend just got back to Japan with brand spanking new MacBook Air bought at AS in Atlanta. Gets into apartment and tries to connect to his Apple Base Station which has never given trouble with an old MacBook. Cannot connect. After six or seven tries at switching wifi on off, checking passwords etc., finally gets a low speed connection that drops in and out every 10 minutes and cannot hold a skype connection.

Great huh!

I am explaining that 10.7.1 will fix it and he is off to buy a USB/Ethernet adapter in the meantime.

Pathetic service Apple.

My issue was that everytime I returned to my iMac or tried accessing using iPhone/iPad it wouldn't allow any traffic through. Was driving me insane as I needed to access information on there from work etc.

I phoned apple who advised me to set up a new location within airport but only when traffic was going through. 3 days later and it hasn't dropped once. Back to nomad it seems.

For some strange reason airport was using a location dating back to march which I did not create.

Could you check yours to see if lion had strangely done it?

I have been a long time Apple user and have recommended it to so many friends. I was the one that would find articles that would compare mac to a Pc and showed how superior the Mac system was. Early on it was so user friendly and so logical to use. This problem with Lion is unacceptable. I purchased a desktop at Costco for practically nothing because I needed a large monitor and after spending the money on my Mac pro I was short on funds. The computer came with lifetime assistance( I know the lifetime could be until the manufacturer folds) but the few times I called to inquire I always got a person on the phone and the help I needed. The computer works flawlessly and wasn't conked up with so many features I didn't need . It came with windows 7and your other basics. I could have purchased 4 of these units for what I paid for my mac.

Obviously Mac isn't listening , is there an Apple page on facebook? If enough people on facebook bring this problem up then Apple will have to take notice or else lose their loyal base. You know how loyal Mac usesrs are ....or were !

This is a follow up to my post of 9/12. Unfortunately, the WiFi connection did not hold as a result of emptying the Cache, resetting Safari, and resettling the PRAM and NVRAM on either of my MBPs.But, it did stay up for far longer than any time since I updated to Lion.

Also, it stayed up longer on my 2009 MBP than it did on my 2007 MBP. Beside the 2.4 and 5 gHz network on my fourth generation Airport Extreme, I have a second network set up on my 2007 second generation (2.4gHz), and this may account for the differential between connectivity of the two MBPs.

In any case, I still have a connectivity problem.

I am going to say it, today I am going to say it....I HATE APPLE COMPUTER.

My friend in New York went through a week of **** with Lion on her computer and lost it this morning. She threw the mbPro out of her 4th floor window, but to make sure it was dead, she ran down to smash it to bits with a baseball bat. Lion turned a beautiful woman into a raving lunatic. They did this to her, by selling an operating system that does not work, that cannot be downloaded with the option of erasing the hard drive to do a clean install, for creating an operating system that renders software incompatible, for an operating system that DOES NOT STAY CONNECTED WITH WIFI, an operating system designed to take computers into the sickening land of iPadness, turning them into iPadputers.

For selling all new computers with Lion installed, and not including a RECOVERY os, or any of the software that came with a mac making it easier to pay thousands of dollars for one, no garageband, not imovie, no iphoto.

Today I hate Apple computer for what the did to a friend, for what they cost that one consumer in pain and suffering and money.

I feel guilty because it is I who talked her into a Mac when she had to reinstall Windows on her computer inundated with spyware and viruses. At least it came with a restore cd. Mac no longer does.

She will buy another pc. She will partition the hard drive and install Linux on it, and it will work, something that cannot be said for Lion, and the direction Mac is taking their computers.

This seems to have worked for me!!

I have a Macbook, and was experiencing the EXACT annoying problem. I called the apple support phone number and they gave me a solution to the problem and it finally works again!

1. Go to system preferences and open or click Network

2. On the Wifi tab, click on Advanced button near the lower right corner

3. On the Wi-Fi tab go to the Preferred Networks box where it lists the networks your computer knows to connect to

4. Now delete all of the networks that you do not recognize, especially ones that may be in your apartment building or that your computer may be in range of. Make sure that your network is at the top of the list. You can drag them. The tech person said it was ok to have a couple other ones, but to make sure that mine was at the top of the list.

5. CLick OK then apply. now try it out and see if it worked

At first Safari gave me the same error message but about 3-5 seconds later it automatically loaded up my homepage. Then after 2 more times of shutting or putting my computer to sleep to test it, it started loading my homepage like normal again. I really hope this works for you because I know how enraging the problem is !

Hi I'm yet another early downloader of Lion with dropout issues with my Macbook Pro, Mac Mini and Macbook Air. Both iPhones would drop internet connectivity to a network using Airport Extreme with a Airport Express acting as a network extender.

When the drop outs happened, all wifi to all devices would cease at the same time. My wife was getting very stressed and this in turn had me stressed more!

Finally, after trialling some of the software resets which didn't help, I reset both the Airport Extreme and Express back to factory settings, starting up a new network.

For 24 hours, I haven't had any issues.

Lion does seem a little unfinished to me overall. The side swipe of the pages isn't rock solid and often the dock doesn't disappear in fullscreen mode. Dare I say it but the user experience in terms of reliability (security aside) was better with Snow Leopard.

Luck to all of you still having issues.

I posted a possible fix before, and now by adding this next fix, I am fully up and running. Skype, YouTube, browsing, all OK.

This might help
1. Utilities - Keychain Access
2. Select login in Keychains at top right and All Items at Category at middle left.
3. Look for Airport under Name/Kind on main screen.
4. If there is more than one mention of Airport, delete all mentions with Airport in them.
5. Close windows and restart.
6. Connect by wifi again and reenter passwords/user name for login.
7. When connected via wifi, move cursor to wifi icon in tool bar and press Option key while clicking on wifi icon.
8. Post what the drop down menu says for PHY mode, Channel, RSSI, Transmit Rate.

ALSO, for good measure I went into Airport Utility and upped the band to 5Hz (GHz?) You get somewhat less range, but more power.

I think I am running the best now, than I have for years.
