Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

From there:

Apple is aware of the loss of Internet connection and the loss of Wi-Fi connection after awaking from sleep, and the automatic immediate wake from sleep

Correct for that, where the keywords are: after awaking from sleep, and the automatic immediate wake from sleep

THATS indeed no WiFi or Ethernet issue.

For that, they roll out a update.

I will have a read in fully over the next day or so, my iMac is late 2009, so I dont have the option for QOS.

Also my N Router is an older Netgear, and it was running on N but I switched it off when I started getting drop outs on Lion, although in theory nothing changed when I disabled N (so it makes no difference if N is ON or OFF). Also even though my router is N supported, its draft N plus not 5ghz and only 2.4ghz. Things did improve slightly when I logged a ticket with Apple who got me to create a new Wifi Profile, but Safari seems the main villain as it reports No internet connection when Google and Chrome seem to carry on working. Apple have now escalated my ticket to engineers and next level from support desk, they email me once a week or more if they have any suggestions and the ticket is still open. I also have two different support staff on the same ticket, so they are working together on this case. I will let you know what transpires (if anything).

Ikkyusan,

as there no specific information in your post I cant give a clear answer about your problem.

But, droping iTunes or Video streams is mostly caused by bad packets in the network leading the server (source) or the client (recipient) to quit the connection.

Maybe there where no problems before (with SLeo) but it is not based on Lion at all.

Give this a try and post results please: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1787183?answerId=16058987022#16058987022

Even if, in the view of several millions of Lion are sold up to now, its a very low percentage or even in the range of per mill.

And for those are permanently arguing about Lion as the evil and before all was pretty, you invited to take a look on the link below.

Starting at 2009, 225.301 people looked on that discussion about WiFi issues with Snow Leo. A lot of them with similar arguments like here (and now) about the good old WiFi times with Leopard.

And if you go back in the history of the community, the discussion repeats since WiFi is available on Mac's.

I also recommend to take a look on Etresofts last postings on another WiFi/Lion discussion.

For the uninitiated "more experienced users." Copy-pasted from this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2644274?start=465&tstart=0

"Download the IO80211Family.kext file taken from the 10.6.4 update here:

http://hotfile.com/dl/111337068/eee082f/IO80211FamilyKext_10_64.zip.html

Then, you can follow tenortims instructions:

1) As root, cd to /System/Library/Extensions, rename IO80211Family.kext to IO8021Family.1066 (or anything else to back it up), and copy in the replacement IO80211Family.kext that we extracted from 10.6.4.

2) Download, install and run "Kext Utility" (Google it, it's at Insanely Mac). It should ask for your password, run, and fix up the kext permissions and caches.

3) Reboot. You should now be on the new (old) driver/firmware. Verify by running "About this Mac" -> "More Info" -> "Network" -> "Airport". As stated, the newer firmware is 2.1.14.5, the working firmware is 2.0.19.10.

To recap, the IO80211Family.kext file ver. 2.1.14.5 or above *does not* work with some Atheros 5416 cards. This means that if you have this card and are experiencing difficulties with the 10.6.5, 10.6.6, 10.6.7 10.6.8 update, you will need to replace the newer IO80211Family.kext file with the older ver.2.0.19.10 one.

The downgrade of the IO80211Family.kext file to the 2.0.19.10 version (taken from the 10.6.4 update) worked for me under Snow Leopard 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 on my 2007 Macbook 13.3 core 2 duo with a Atheros 5416 card. I have yet to upgrade to Lion 10.7 and see if it works for that too. "

I just sent the following BR to Apple:

Hello,

I am so **** frustrated:

>>> after updating to lion my internet-connection dropped permanently

>>> then I tried almost ALL the different solutions described in this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191630?start=0&tstart=0 and elsewhere (except working with a permanent ping via terminal > hey guys - this can`t be it...) without any durable success

>>> then I did a clean installation of lion and didn`t have any problems any more for almost six weeks

>>> AND NOW the problems have come back!!!

>>> same ISP and router/firmware as under Snow Leopard where I never had theses problems

Having a look at the kernel.log it looks like this when the connection drops:

Some facts on my ISP and router:

Re: Wifi Constantly Dropping in Lion

Sep 9, 2011 7:04 AM (in response to lhale)

HI,

I have an end of 2009 iMac 21.5 inch (Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz) , and I can just confirm that I still have the WiFi dropping issue with the last upgrade of Lion 10.7.1 and this is not only after the sleep, it could be anytime. When I re-boot my Mac it seems to stay stable for a quit long period, but then it bugs again.

I have both a ISP router and Airport Express but there is no difference, the dropping occurs with both.

Before upgrading to Lion, I had never never experimented an issue on Wi-Fi connection. WiFi was perfectly working on Snow Leopard.

In addition, I have an iPad and a MacBook Pro bought 2 weeks ago (so with Lion), they both work perfectly.

After reading this forum, I'm sure Apple got a Wi-Fi issue between some machines, at least with the iMac, and Lion.

As regular customer of Apple, it is the first time I'm disapointed by a quality issue like this one, I'm sure they are doing their best to fix quickly the issue. The first step will be to recognize officialy there is an issue and then commit a date to fix it.

Unquote

I agree that the last paragraph , is not helping but this was my thought at that time.

Coming back to my situation, I recognize that the issue is not an easy one and as I'm not a WiFi network expert I will not try to change my current settings as my other devices (iPad, MBPro, iPhone and PC with Windows 7) are connecting perfectly with the WiFi network.

I hope that the details of my experience will help to understand. (MBP is a 13'', Intel Core i7).

I thank you for your attention and I will try to investigate on other forums.

This could help to some of you as an interim solution until Apple will come up with a fix.

It seems that drivers for Atheros (Qualcomm) based WiFi cards does have some issue. As a workaround I have downgraded the driver delivered with Lion to the driver deliver with SL.

DO NOT delete the complete system configuration folder.

That can make your system unusable.

It may be a fix to delete specific files from the system configuration depending of the problem you have.

To get useful help, open your own question on a matching forum here.

Give a speaking title ("Help" will not do the trick) and provide all info about problem, error messages, what you have done so far to solve the problem and what was the result of that.

I have Lion Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C73) (GM Relase Build) and I can tell you that on my MacBookPro3,1 the Wifi instability and disconnects are still present aswell as a problem with the NetBios Name not appearing on the network when the computer is connected through Wifi instead of ethernet. You should test this Netbios issue on your machines to see if the problem is specific to notebooks because on my setup which is a very apple specific setup I am using an apple timecapsule latest generation the netbios problem doesn't occure on a late 2009 imac. This problem of the netbios name not appearing has develped with the upgrade and release of lion... Snow Leopard did not have this problem and I tested that by downgrading to snow leopard. This netbios name problem creates havok for SMB shares since windows cant even find the machine. I was hoping that 10.7.2 would fix this it wont... I am letting you know that you are going to be dissapointed if you think this release will fix wifi as well as SMB problems it doesn't... I am very upset with how long this is taking to fix it is clearly a bug numours posts and messages to apple I would really advice apple customers to complain in the feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and bug reports http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/.. Hope they fix this with an interm update however it most likely wont be fixed until 10.7.3 and maybe not even by then.

Good news (hopefully):

Mac OS 10.7.2 (just released) may solve many of our wi-fi problems. The release notes say this:

"Address an issue that may cause a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep."

Post here whether the update solves your problems, please, so we can see how successful it is.

(Dhwalt: Thanks for your suggestions re solving this problem via Terminal. I'm hoping that the update will solve my problems, but if it doesn't, perhaps I'll give your suggestions a try.)
