Quicktime not opening AVI files in Lion.

I just installed OS X Lion but when I try to open any AVI video with Quicktime that reads "The Document <filename> could not be opened. A required codec is not available." I clicked the "Tell Me More" button and I redownloaded the DIVX codec but my files still don't open with quicktime. Is it possible that my codec is not compatible with Quicktime for Lion? But then again the Quicktime application is still the same, it hasn't been updated since Snow Leopard. Is anyone else encountering this?

I'm almost a 100% sure I've uninstalled the entire (DivX) codec. I went through an "uninstall DivX" uninstaller, and no longer see it in Applications (or Luanch Pad- which I suppose is now the same thing). Tried to Spotlight search for "DivX For Mac", nothing coming up.

Also went throug system prefrences and I don't see any codecs there, expect for Perian and flip4mac.

Unistalling and re-installing Perian seems to work. What can also be done (from my tests), is to get info on the problematic movie file in the Finder and check the 'Open with...' option. If it says 'QuickTime Player' look for and select 'Perian - Open QT Player' and then double click the video file. It should open and play as expected if it requires decoding that Perian understands. After that, all similar video files should play without having to make that change.

It appears, from what I've seen (and the re-install of Perian seems to confirm), that QTX forgets that Perian is there and needs a brief wake up call. I'm going to assume that this will also apply to video files which require decoding via Flip4Mac. The helper app that QTX would initially need/use is the WMV Player.

Like Patrick Ellis1 I need to continue to use Perian and Flip For Mac. I install Quicktime Player 7 into the Utilities Folder Per Apple Article HT3678, " Installing Quicktime Player 7 on Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard." I also run an ancient PrefPane called "Default Apps." In Default Apps one can designate which application is the default for any specific extension. Movies in iTunes 10.4 work fine, and i have set Quicktime Player 7 as the default for .wmv, .avi, .mov etc. and they play faultlessly. If I try to play the same file on Quicktime X, all I get is the audio (no video) or a blank screen.

BTW I am using an Apple USB keyboard, a Logitech USB Mouse and the new Apple Trackpad (with "natural" scrolling swithed off). So far, so good.
