Quicktime not opening AVI files in Lion.

Same problem here,reinstalled perian but still no luck.

Then i noticed that i i remove the opetion "load external subtitles" in perian control pane the avi will open in quick time x.

So, the problem is in the handling of subtitles of quick timex i think

Yeah i look at it and you'r right. Subtitles are problem I guess. In near future we will see update for perian.

There is a discussion about this problem on the perian forums, let's hope the problem will be solved soon

Alright, so I deleted DivX and 3vx and kept Perian and updated it and also kept flip for mac. still nothing, BUT, when I hit the space bar to preview the avi movie it DOES play it. When I try to open it with quicktime, it does not! what am I doing wrong?

Update: Perian 1.2.3 fixed the issues I was having. I can watch .avi files in both Quicktime 10.1 and Quicktime &.6.6, using Perian 1.2.3, and Flip4mac allows use of wmv.

I did update perian. I can watch everything if i preview it by hitting spacebar, but when I go to watch it on quick time it still wont play.

Same here: i update perian, and now quicktime x opens the avi files, but the it's stuck on the first frame of the video. If i click play it shows the next frame and then stops again. I already tried to uninstall and reinstall Perian, but with no luck 😟

i just updated perian to 1.2.3. still no luck. qt x still doesn't play avis. i get the message:

You need QuickTime Player 7 to open “****.avi”.

with qt 7 the avi plays, but still, there were no problems like this with sl.

update: if i uncheck the "Load external subtitles" in perian's pref pane, qt X works. so as somebody mentioned before, it must be perian's problem with subtitles.

REAL PLAYER WORKS , OPEN THE FILE IN REAL PLAYER ...

I found an old xvid codec in the /library/quicktime/ folder; i deleted it and now quick time x opens avi file.

I still have the problem with subtitles, if i check "load external subtitle" then quick time tells me to open the file in quicktime7.

I guess the 1.2.3 upgrade of perian wasn't about that bug.

I still wait for another update and i use VLC in the meantime.

Had the same issue and now working perfectly. As suggested I: 1. Uninstalled DivX 2. Installed Perian 3. Re-started computer. Presto! Thanks for the tip!

I rolled back to Perian 1.2.2 and it works now.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Perian to no avail. My problem is that the audio will play for a second and then stop. When I tried to open .avi using QT/Perian I got an error message "quicktime player got an error connection is invalid (-609)"

Hi guys,

just stumbling over the "won't play avi files" with my lion today and already tried to reinstall Perian, tried Perian 1.2.2, installed Flip4Mac, but did not suceed to solve the issue.

My avi files do play perfectly with VLC and did work in Quicktime under Leopard by the way...

Any ideas highly appreciated 😕
