Quicktime not opening AVI files in Lion.

I just installed OS X Lion but when I try to open any AVI video with Quicktime that reads "The Document <filename> could not be opened. A required codec is not available." I clicked the "Tell Me More" button and I redownloaded the DIVX codec but my files still don't open with quicktime. Is it possible that my codec is not compatible with Quicktime for Lion? But then again the Quicktime application is still the same, it hasn't been updated since Snow Leopard. Is anyone else encountering this?

Ok, this is a mess! Now it's been 3 days I'm trying everything to fix Lion. I did a fresh install and everything was fine, until I tried to copy back my codec folders. First Flash did stop to work in safari, so I uninstall/reinstall, remove files and all this tricky techie stuff and then it worked again after installing Flash 11 beta from Adobe Labs.

But then, the AVI files don't preview and don't play back in Quicktime anymore. So I tried everything I read on all thread here and there. Install Divx, then uninstall it, delete files in Application support folder, uninstall Perian, reinstall Perian 1.2.3, I even remove ALL codec files from both /Library/Quicktime and /System/Library/Quicktime, and redo all uninstall/reinstall stuff, copy fresh Lion codec files from my brother mac, and redo everything again and again... and again!

I also install Quicktime 7 Pro, with the MPEG-2 Component extension... but nothing! NADA!

I can't get any preview, and can't open an AVI file in any Quicktime X, Quicktime 7 Pro and neither Perian - Open in QT Player... The files I try to open are working fine on my iMac, with Snow Leopard.

I'm exhausted with Lion now. The worst upgrade ever so far... What should I do to get it work correctly???! I'm just very close to the point to format my drive at this point... But it's been already a week I'm setting up everything, reinstalling everything and wouldn't like to redo... again!

Even as an hardcore Apple fanboy, right now, I just seriously HATE Lion and Apple period...

Yep! I just found a work-arround by doing like you...

1) Unistall Divx and clean the Divx Files in Application Support folder

2) Delete all codec files from /Library/Quicktime and /System/Library/Quicktime folders

3) Reboot

4) Mount the Lion ESD image

5) Open the Essentials.pkg with Pacifist

6) Extract (Reinstall) Quicktime applications

7) Extract (Restore) codec files for /Library/Quicktime and /System/Library/Quicktime

8) Reinstall Perian 1.2.3

9) Reboot

10) Enjoy watching AVI files in Preview and Quicktime again 🙂

When I try to copy my old codec, even if I don't overwrite the current one, it will mess up the setup and I'll have to redo it from step 2). I need to figure out, which extra codec I will need and will work fine with the current setup (Basic Lion + Perian + Flip4Mac)

As long it works, I might just not touch anything about codecs then... and will see if I can work with any file.

If it helps...

Hey Spid, I'm trying to do your procedure, but where is the "Lion ESD image" I bought Lion online and it installed itself, then I realized that was a stupid thing to do, I should go to the Apple store and buy a hardcopy DVD, in case I needed to do a fresh install.

Do you know where it is?

Also for th number "2) Delete all codec files from /Library/Quicktime and /System/Library/Quicktime folders", I suppose that codecs are the ones that show 'codec' in the name, no? becasue in that folder I have many files, for example "CanonMJPEGAVI.component" those I won't touch, right?

The ESD.dmg is in the Lion installation package. You need to go in /Application and find the Lion Installation app, right click, show content and you'll find the dmg files in a folder. Just extract it by copying it somewhere, let's say the desktop. You can find this procedure on the Internet and you could even burn the image to help you to get n install DVD backup...

Codecs are component files. You can just move them all and save them on your desktop and try to put them back one by one once everything will work fine again. Be careful, because it could be one of the additional files that is messing up the divx playback. So don't overwrite or replace the new good Lion codec files by yours neither.

If it helps, good luck!!

Hi,

if you still do have the Lion Installer App, you do have the ESD image (It's actually call InstallESD.dmg but it's located inside the Lion Installer App).

So to find it, you need to right click on the Lion Installer App, click "Show Content", and then go in folder Content/SharedContent/

Then you will find the image file you can copy on your desktop. There's the complete procedure here:

If it really delete it and you don't have the Installer App anymore, you might just have a look here:

Good Luck 🙂

I bought a new MacBook Pro about 2 months ago, upgraded to Lion and now I cant open any .mov files I have saved. This really ***** because video editing was pretty much the whole reason I bought this Mac to edit and create video's.....I have tried most everything that I can figure out on this post. I am not a computer genius (which is why I thought Mac would be for me..BOY WAS I WRONG) HELP!!!!!

Yeah, that's right, Lion do remove its install disc after the install I guess... just another stupid thing from Apple I guess. The transition for "Mac App Store" distribution for OS isn't really prefect and they didn't think things could go wrong and people would be screwed...

So I have been fighting for a whole week to fix my stuff (and I'm a geeky guy), so let me try to help you guys.

Here's an extract of the files from the install image.

Please, before to do anything, save this folder somewhere to be able to redo the operation if it failed. Also, this is no guarantee it will work. Save your own codecs to reinstall them one by one if required in future.

Then, remove all your files from /Library/Quicktime and /System/Library/Quicktime

On the zip file, you will have the Quicktime.app you can copy on your /Application folder

You will have a folder you will need to copy in /Library/Quicktime

And another one you will need to copy in /System/Library/Quicktime

That will replace the step 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the procedure I listed above.

Let us know if it works for you and if it did, don't forget to make a backup of your system with Time Machine.

Good Luck 🙂
