Will hotmail work as IMAP on the new Lion Mail?

You CAN set up hotmail as IMAP if you already have it set up as such on the iphone. Start with Mail>Preferences>accounts>click on the + sign.

Click on that POP, it should show the IMAP option.

That doesnt work... I have hotmail set up with exchange on my iPhone, but when I try and set up with the same settings in Lion Mail, it is unable to connect with the hotmail server. Any suggestions?

I was also looking into the option of having my Hotmail account set up to IMAP in the new Lion Mail?

Same problem here. It looks like Mail lost the dropdown allowing to select IMAP, POP3 in Lion 😟

OK, What I have found out is that if you configure e-mail accounts via the System Preferences > "Internet & Wireless" > "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" **instead** of via Mail preferences, there you can select a "Microsoft Exchange" configuration that is the one I have used to configure IMAP on hotmail with my iPhone (m.hotmail.com as server).

OK, but stil, I have tried this and it does not work (as it does on my iPhone and iPad) ...

Anyone?

I also tried setting my Hotmail account through System Preferences and selecting "Exchange" but does not work, marks as error.

Also if you try to delete the POP Hotmail account it says all messages and data will also be deleted.

Any other ideas to make IMAP work for Hotmail account in OS X Lion's new Mail application? Thanks.

m.hotmail.com will not work for Mac Mail. It is an active sync server, not an Exchange server. It will only work on mobile devices, (iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone, etc). The only desktop or laptop program that fully supports Hotmail is Windows Live Mail but unfortunately is PC only.

I can setup hotmail account, but if I delete some message when I'm in Mail, it don't delete them on the server so if I acces my hotmail account from the web on another computer, I have to read all my old message deleted... Someting to help me? (Is it what you want to say when you wrote that its a POP account et not an IMAP account?)

Here are some settings for Hotmail, it appears that the "Free Version" which is a POP3 and "Paid for Versions" act differently.

"But now POP3 access is now available to Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Microsoft plans to roll out POP3 access to more parts of the world later this year. You can find the settings below:

• POP server: pop3.live.com
• POP server port: 995
• POP SSL required? Yes
• User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com
• Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
• SMTP server: smtp.live.com
• SMTP server port: 25
• SMTP Authentication required? Yes (same as POP3 username and password)
• SMTP SSL required? Yes"

If you want to create IMAP mail acount (yahoo, gmail etc) in Mail.app in Lion you can do the following:

1. Disconnect you computer from internet.

2. Go to FIle-> Add Account.

3. Enter your box and password.

4. Press Continue.

In the next window you will be able to choose type of account to be created.

Pavel 555 what about incoming mail server and outgoing mail server? i type pop3.live.com for incoming mail server and outgoing mail server smtp.live.com, These the result i get.

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verifty the setting for account "hotmail" or try again
