Will hotmail work as IMAP on the new Lion Mail?

No you can't, Hotmail only supports POP on a Mac or PC, Active Sync on IOS devices.

It is not Mail, it is Hotmail, and it does not support Imap, hence no option to choose it!

I have few different mailboxes. Yahoo, mail.ru, hotmail.

Mail.ru and Yahoo I configured manually as IMAP. But particularly for Hotmail I used automatic configuration, because, as far as I know Hotmail does not have IMAP.

So how ? any idea Hotmail IMAP

Under new Mountain Lion mail, IMAP is not an option for a hotmail address which you must enter in before proceeding. You can set up an Exchange account through system preferences, but need a server name. I looked at how Windows Outlook 2010 configures hotmail and it shows it as being a MAPI. Unfortunatly, it doesn't let you drill down into settings like a gmail account.

Hotmail does not support Imap access from any client, not just Mail. Active Sync is supported on Mobile devices only. That is how it is.

If that is true, then wouldn't that mean that mail would not sync (meaning if I delete in on the client, it deletes it off the hotmail server), since from what I have read, this is not possible using POP? I ask, because this is in fact the case using Windows Outlook 2010. Delete locally on Outlook, go to Hotmail on the web and the message is gone. Granted, in the account settings, the hotmail account shows as up as MAPI, not IMAP, which is what leads me to think that it can be configured in Mac Mail using the Exchange option. All I need is the server name (and maybe port numbers, but I can't get that far).

That is correct, you can not sync Hotmail because it is a POP system, although other alternatives are available (Mapi on Outlook and ActiveSync on mobile devices) it is POP only on a PC or a Mac.

The Exchange server you are looking for is m.hotmail.com, but it only works on mobile devices, feel free to waste your time trying it if you must.

If you want an iMap system then leave Hotmail.

You can't assume Outlook settings for Mail - for Exchange it uses EWS (Exchange Web Services) which is a different protocol altogether.

I can set that up ok, and mail syncs to Mac Mail perfectly. However if I delete messages from Mac Mail, hotmail doesnt seem to sync the changes. Any suggestions?
