"Pinch to zoom" not working in the Finder

Hello everyone,

I just installed Lion on my Macbook Air 13 inches, and I cannot "pinch to zoom" anymore in the Finder or on the desktop. (but it works fine in Aperture for example)

Anyone has this problem ? I checked the options, but could not find anything.

Thank you for your help !

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7)

I did a very sad finding today. I've spotted an ultrabook on a shelf on my way to the Apple corner in a large computer store. Driven by curiosity, I've tried how the touchpad on that machine feels and it supported pinch to zoom under Win! :-( It's really sad that even an OS, which I abandoned because it had otherwise lot of major flaws, now supports what I really liked on Mac OS X SL.... I really, really hope that we will get this nice function back.

Pinch to zoom function in Finder has been one of the best and I used it frequently.

Realizing it is gone has been the first big dissapointment for me in all years I am using their products (MacBooks, iPad, iPod, iPhone).

I can not believe that Apple removed it intentionaly... it must have been a mistake.

Therefore I really hope it would be back as soon as possible.

I would apprechiate a comment on this one from the Apple side as well.

"I was able to get mine working again by checking the trackpad option on and off and then subsequently quitting safari and restarting. Not sure which step actually worked. Just the trackpad option alone didn't. But maybe it was the combo of steps. Good luck."

This worked for me too! Thanks veshman9 - not being able to zoom in Finder was driving me crazy!

Solution FOUND!!!

After filing an official complaint with Apple pleading to re-enable the pinch to zoom gesture in Lion & Mt Lion's Finder with not even a reply. Having searched EVERYWHERE online almost daily since Lion was first released to find any workaround to once again enable the pinch to zoom gesture in Lion's, (& Mt Lion's) Finder without any success...

Today, I am very pleased to announce that I have finally found a more than satisfactory workaround to again be able to use the pinch to zoom gesture to resize icons in Lion & Mt Lion. The catch is, this is done entirely without the Finder at all.

Forget the Finder! Instead, go to www.cocoatech.com and install Path Finder 6. It is VERY well worth the minor expense. As soon as you launch Path Finder 6 you will again be able to use the pinch to zoom gesture to resize icons within Path Finder's windows. Path Finder's interface is also far more customizable than the Finder ever was. It is even quite simple to customize Path Finder to make its appearance almost indistinguishable from that of the native Finder.

All this time, I was trying unsuccessfully to re-enable the pinch to zoom gesture within the Finder itself when the solution was with Path Finder. No more Finder for me! I use Path Finder and rejoice with the ability to once again use the wonderful pinch to zoom of icons gesture within windows in the manner that a multi touch OS should be meant to in the first place.

It is really quite sad that Apple has removed the pinch to zoom feature from the Finder & even sadder that it is now necessary to use an application made by another company to replace the Finder to re-enable this feature instead. When one thinks about it, this is really Apple's loss and Cocoatech's gain! Path Finder is indeed very well worth it. I hereby have to express my gratitude to Cocoatech for having this feature within their fine Application when Apple instead chose to remove it from the Finder.

I hope that everyone like myself that has been struggling with re-enabling this essential gesture to pinch to zoom the sizes of icons within windows will appreciate this solution as much as I have.

I understand Ckren. This issue drove me crazy. What is the point in having a supposedly gesture based operating system, when the most basic and obvious of gestures, (Pinch to Zoom in Finder) is NOT a part of it?

Apple took the Pinch to Zoom feature out of the Finder because novices to OS X complained when they unwittingly changed the sizes of their icons by unknowingly resting their thumb on their trackpad as they then moved their index finger to move the cursor, but they instead changed their icons sizes and didn't know why this happened and they then complained in such huge numbers that Apple decided to never use the Pinch to Zoom feature in the Finder again.

It is easy to unknowingly change one's icons sizes with the Pinch to Zoom feature with a 'no button', (because it is all one huge button) multitouch trackpad when one has become used to resting one's thumb on the old style trackpad click button.

However I would rather have the choice to be able to have Pinch to Zoom of my icons, (which I vastly prefer) so I decided to use Path Finder & I haven't looked back. Path Finder brought back Pinch to Zoom as well as a lot of other improvements to my Mac(s).

Then instead of removing, it could have been activable somewhere...

Are you sure about what you said? That they remove it because people don't know how to use a trackpad? It feels ironic, it feel like a joke.

If it's the case, why didn't they remove the multi-touch capability, as these people should scroll, zoom, change of space, etc without wanting it if they rest their fingers on the trackpad.

So they delete a simple feature to make it "simpler", but in the other hand, it's hard to explain clearly how icloud, itunes account are working, how it's possible to have one account for each, how icloud stuff are working.

Even some people studying Computer science have some difficulties to understand it...

Oh it would have been really nice if Apple had left a hidden preference file somewhere that could be tweaked to once again allow the Pinch to Zoom feature in the Finder again. I know it is completely gone as I have delved deeply, very deeply into this. Unfortunately when they rewrote the Finder, all the code for it was completely written out.

I am sure about what I said. Apple was pleasing the masses. Unbelievably, people actually didn't understand that they were accidentally triggering the Pinch to Zoom feature by resting their thumbs on the trackpad in this way.

Apple abolished it from the Finder. This remains as a lesson to all of us not to complain at every tiny thing we encounter within OS X to Apple as sometimes it has dire consequences. As it did in this case, end of story.

If you want it to use this feature then you will have to use Path Finder instead.

I did and I am so glad it is in Path Finder.

I am not sure if this has been resolved but if you go to <view> <show status bar> a sliding tool on the bottom right corner appears so you can zoom the icons in the window. Also if you go <view> <show preview> a preview of the icon you select appears in the preview window. This you can pinch and zoom to your desirable size. Hope this helps!

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to El Capitan and was feeling like I was using an old Windows interface... until I found your solution and Voila! I can zoom a finder window again! In case others are a bit confused, I'll add this tip:

1. Go to <View> menu at the top of your screen, to the right of the apple icon (not the View on each Finder window)

2. Select <Show Status Bar>

That's it! Open any Finder window and there at the bottom you'll see the beloved horizontal slider that allows zooming in each window. Sigh of relief!
