Lion: where is iSync?

OK, let's get this straight. Either Apple should provide this as an optional download or someone should upload it somewhere and post the link so we can spread the download accross everywhere.

Apple seem to have discontinued it, but given no reason why.

However, you can just copy iSync v3.1.2 from your Snow Leopard backup to the Applications folder in Lion and continue syncing as before - it works fine.

I'm thoroughly dissapointed in Apple for this!!! ***!

Your Snow Leopard backup will be wherever you backed it up to before installing Lion. It doesn't back it up automatically. If you use Time Machine, you can maybe retrieve iSync from there.

They are in the process of phasing out the SyncServices framework upon which iSync is based, in favour of open, industry-standards.

Although iSync v3.1.2 work in Lion v10.7 - there's no guarantee it will work in future Lion updates, as the SyncServices framework is flagged for removal at some point.

I was under the impression that SyncML was an open, industry standard. Sure, not a lot of vendors came to the party, but at least it -by way of SyncServices- allowed us Mac users to sync certain mobile devices with our desktops. In 10.7 it's 'get an iPhone, or get out of here'.

It'll be interesting to see whether the likes of Nokia and Sony Ericsson will create their own syncing solutions for Mac users, like they do for Windows users. I doubt it, even though both companies currently provides iSync Plugins for a number of their phones.

Well, it's definitely not completely gone. I still get the iSync icon in the menubar when I activate syncing in Address Book in Lion. But the icon now only has a sole "Sync Now" command without "Preferences" or whatever else it had before.

you may get more preferences and related info if to hold an Alt key when clicking on a Sync icon on the menu bar.

BTW by simple mouse click on a Sync icon I have "Open MobileMe Syn Preferences..." in Snow Leopard and "Open MobileMe Preferences..." on Lion

I only get "Sync Now", "Open Sync Diagnostics" and "Reset Sync Services" on Lion. I don't have MobileMe setup though and perhaps that's why I don't get that option you do.

In any case, iSync is still there in Lion. Just not the GUI app itself.

if you have a Snow Leopard backup - simply copy iSync.app to /Applications folder on your Mac running Lion.
