I have installed Lion but the shutdown is much slower now. Snow Leopard shut down in 4 seconds and now it appears to be more like 15-20 seconds. I had to move a few non-compatible apps to trash but that is all I've changed. Any ideas?

Disabling spotlight worked perfectly for my macbook pro! Shutdown time went from unbearable (over 30sec) to about 2seconds. I use "alfred" instead of spotlight for a little while now, so disabling spotlight is a perfect solution for me. Thanks for the awsome tip.

I can (also) confirm that after uninstalling the HP printer software (pack) the shutdown time went from (approx) 10-15 seconds to under 5 seconds (on a SSD) !
Uninstalling the HP software pack was the solution for me too. Awesome! Shutdown is now feeling like it should be on mac: Almost instant (on SSD). Thank you so much for this solution!
Alfred uses Spotlight to function, so disabling it is a bad idea.
Not sure what happened but I upgraded to an SSD and then installed Lion a few days ago and although my startup was quick, it took my MBP about 2 minutes to shut down. I did all the suggested preventive steps to no avail but after about the 4th or 5th time I shut down, the process was almost instant! I had heard that this happens sometimes when you load a new OS (I also loaded one game) that your MAC is doing things behind the scenes because of the upgrade and then those processes smooth out over time. I know...not exactly the technical advice I was looking for when I first read this but it appears to have some truth to it.

By disabling the Sync Services within Outlook 2011 and rebooting, shutdown times returned to normal.
Unfortunately the CONSOLE logs got filled up with:<Error>: AceConnection - Couldn't read anything through read! the os lied to us ;_;
Lion installed but shutdown is much longer now? Ideas?
