Lion Resume feature: How do I disable it?

I'm sure there's a need for it, but I think the Resume feature in OS X Lion is one of the most annoying things about the new OS. Is there any way of disabling this feature?

I also find the Resume feature to be very annoying—much more of a hindrance than a help. Plus, none of the suggestions in this thread about disabling the feature seem to work. I'm running 10.7.4 and when I relaunch an application, all open windows from the previous session reopen—very, very annoying and time wasting, especially because Apple did not offer a reliable way to turn it off.

That's because this thread is about "applications" restarting when you restart your system. This is related to the checkbox that appears when restarting or shutting down. Regardless of whether or not you checked the box, it would automatically be unchecked when you restart your system. This was corrected in 10.7.4. The option to disable what you are referring to has always been available in Lion:

While some people may see my post as off-topic, none the less, the check box that JoeyR references does not *reliably* work on my installation of Mac OS X 10.7.4. Not only do applications restart when I restart the machine, the windows that were open in previous sessions of the application reopeon. I acknowledge that that second part may be off-topic. Turning off the restore feature may be represented in the a control panel, but applications still can still restart with the restart of the machine, regardless of how the box is checked—not always, but under circumstances that I have not identified yet. "Apple did not offer a reliable way to turn it off"—and I emphasize "reliable"—still describes how my laptop behaves.

The answer is already in this thread but here it is again anyway.

Removing the Resume feature for both the applications and the system FOREVER.

This feature is irritating especially the System Resume feature which can not be switched of at all and causes a large amount of problems if the Mac has crashed and you don’t have access to the tick box on the shutdown / restart window.

First of all you have to gain access to the User Library folder which for no good dam reason has been hidden in Lion. Open a terminal window and do this.

———————-

The following method makes the user library folder permanently visible.

Launch Terminal from Mac HD > Applications > Utilities.

From withinTerminal type the following command and press Return: chflags nohidden ~/Library

Enter system administrator password if prompted and press Return:

Note: The System administrator password is not visible as you type it.

———————-

Now open this folder ( NOT THE MAIN LIBRARY FOLDER ) which is now visible in your user folder ( the one with either your or the computers name ) and find the folder “Saved Application State”.

Open this folder and delete everything that’s in it then lock the folder so Lion cant right to it anymore.

You have just stopped any application remembering its saved state. YAA

Now find the file in the library folder that will have this path.

Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.7E0D66E6-A59D-5A32-8C38-5ECD4D0 C0C81.plist

The numbers may be different but the ‘com.apple.loginwindow’ is the clue.

Before you lock this file close all programs and only have the Finder running. Once you have done that lock this file.

Congratulations you have just disabled Resume system wide and it will never make you wait for your computer to start up or open up your holiday snaps at the beginning of that important business presentation.
