Scroll Bar arrows Gone?

I agree with Scott - navigating within an Excel spreadsheet using keyboard arrows is much slower than using the old-style scroll bar arrows.

Pete - moving backwards to Snow Leopard is a stupid suggestion. A wide range of modern software won't work with the older OS versions.

Then anything designed to work with Lion or Mountain Lion has been, or should have been, designed without need for Scroll Bar Arrows as they have never existed in these OSXs. What is stupid about that? If the program needs scroll bar arrows then how stupid are those designers? 😉

Pete - have you ever used a very large spreadsheet? If you had, you wouldn't be questioning the need for navigation tools.

Every day. Works fine for me. You just have to adjust your workflow. If you haven't in two years, then you are in trouble. S what program are YOU using that cannot work in Snow Leopard, that 'stupid' suggestion I made. You said that modern software won't work with it, so what are you using?

So, aside from Apple appreciating the suggestion to bring arrow buttons back to the scroll-bars, there is nothing left to see here other than condescension from "evolved" trackpad/touchscreen afficionados, without pity for those of us who may find the single line precision of arrow buttons entirely useful, which is even more frustrating because it would be SO SIMPLE to remedy: re-introduce scroll bar arrow buttons! (More people should request this from Apple directly, although some are listening in here, sometimes...) They could even have a whole stage show unveiling for them 😉 Or whatever, just sneak them back in next update would be awesome.

P.S. I only use 10.8 because it shares better w/ ios6, otherwise EVERYthing was better on Apple 10.6 IMHO

Yeah, 10.6, the dinosaur days, two years ago.... at least it is better than iOs-ification! I forget who coined that phrase... I think it may have been in this thread awhile back... Perfect description of this problem here 🙂

I just realized this but should have earlier. Peter is LITTERALLY a troll. Probably just a kid for whom the computer really is just a toy. He dosn't work, and has time to pust under multipule names. Don't respond to him anymore. He's wrong, he knows it but is just rocking the boat because the boat is rockable. Just keep posting whenever the urge hits you as I do. Expect him to follow, but don't expect him to have anything to say.

My number one solution isn't cheap, but it's what I finally did. I got a cheap Dell with the office package. That's all I have on it, and with just that I can get most of my real work done.

My number two solution is much cheaper (though not free.) I bought one of those gaming mice with several buttons on it then mapped the down and up keys to buttons near my thumb on the mouse. It's still not perfect. I have to shift my grip on the mouse to hit them, and that means I lose control of the pointer for that time. But it's a much better solution than hitting the arrow keys on the board.

I know that can't eliminate the problem, but hopefully it will dull it down to a roar.

Whilst the keyboard up, down arrow keys/mouse mapped keys is a workaround.

When I work in a large spreadsheet, as I often do, I like to have a central view of the data I'm looking at. The incremental arrows used to allow me to navigate a spreadsheet without finding my view line was either the first or last line in the sheet. To me this is a major issue as I'm often needing to reference my view to the lines of data above and below the central line of interest.

Whilst this thread has become irritating due of the number of responses with reference to gestures and I can think of a couple I would use right now. The key point is when "improving" a workflow you don't break it for the sake of it. There is always room for an "improved" method of working, but enforcing a workflow change by removing standard features is the prime cause of transition trauma in any new software impementation. Just because I think gestures are a pain in the preverbials doesn't mean I would remove them from new releases, I just turn them off, likewise the arrows should be a selectable UI option so allowing the user to customise their own UI experience.

The key to this thread is keep telling Apple through the correct channels (not this thread) that we need the feature back, just moaning & being trolled by idiots won't do anything other than frustrate those with a genuine requirement for the feature to be reinstated in the OS UI.

Good ideas, I believe they are working on it! It is good some people are unaffected by their absence, but too silly to eliminate them due to their usefulness. Until then I will keep checking on other ideas, hopefully without having to weed through bitter, uninformed responses haha

Precisely. Unfortunately, people using this thread to air grievances with Apple and trade insults with each other have made it difficult to find the posts which do actually contribute a work-around.

For those working with Excel you can easily put the scroll bar arrows in a toolbar (see my post at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3196331?start=75&tstart=0 - Nov 10, 2012 and andalusite's post on Aug 7, 2012.)
