Just for the record: I just noticed that my ⌃⇧⌘ modifier combo doesn't work in InDesign because one of the modifiers activates the Zoom when using a scroll wheel. Besides, InDesign apparently can't scroll "per pixel", so it will need its own set of macros anyway – which is luckily no problem with Keyboard Maestro.

But the actual keyboard shortcuts are totally free anyway. Currently I'm evaluating if the fn+ctrl+arrowkeys combo works as a global shortcut without conflicts – there's less keys to press. 🙂 It's also a more logical combo, being an extension of the standard fn-arrowup (page up) and fn-arrowdown (page down) standard.

Slightly off-topic, but also a "killer" utility for MacBook users is the free KeyRemap4MacBook which may provide some additional help. I'm using it ever since Apple in its infinite "wisdom" has removed the fn-NumPad keys from MacBooks. Which is truly a painful omission e.g. for any InDesign power user: text format keyboard shortcuts only work with the NumPad!

Correction: absence of scroll arrows. Have already set scroll bars to "Always".

Yes, been gone for well over two years and no sign of them returning in OSX 10.9 so either use the hack above or adjust to it as millions of others have, otherwise reinstall your backup of 10.6.8

You can tell Apple, but many have and still not coming back. You can move back to Windows if you wish, until they go in the same direction.

Good Luck

Apple is slowly evolving into an iPod company. Their computers suck more with every irriteration. I have hopes for mavericks, but they aren't high. It's telling that Microsoft didn't follow them into this folly. They still listen to their customers. And will conesquently maintain their VAST lead. Still, I haven't sold any stock. Their iOS devices are almost as good as android. Computers... I think they are slowly ceding to the fact that the future belongs to Microsoft. Sad that they give up like this.

Switch to Microsloth (I'd call them something else, involving Yiddish profanity, but this is presumably a family board) if you will.

But think about it: do you really want to spend the rest of your life paying The Bill?

(I've seen scroll bar arrows rendered utterly useless, by the way: try running a GEM app, like the real Xerox Ventura Publisher, on a 486-or-better DOS box: the scroll bar arrows in GEM have no speed governor, so they become uncontrollable on even remotely modern hardware, and the only controllable way to scroll is by dragging the thumb. But that is neither here nor there.)

On a more useful note: given that a scroll wheel is the most viable workaround I've found for the lack of scrollbar arrows, I've found that scroll wheel acceleration on my work Mac is far too abrupt, jumping from too-slow response to too-fast response. Is there a good way to get to a happy medium, that's a better substute for the arrow buttons?

I have a Trackpad (actually named "Magic Pad" or something like it in custom with Apple's oh so cutesy naming convention). I had to get it out of necessity since I'm a composer and use Finale constantly. The removal of the scroll arrows is a huge problem. The Magic Pad is much more difficult to work with. It lacks precision. I've heard the same from graphic artists and from people who work with large spreadsheets. I was finally able to drop Macs entirely except that I still write software for them occasionally. The only program I was still using on Mac was Digital Performer. DP was recently ported to Windows. I'm now using DP and Finale in Windows and haven't looked back. I'm using a Windows 7 system. Windows 8 is basically a good operating system although Microsoft messed up on shoving the Metro interface down everyone's throat. It should have been an option.
